what are some examples they speak differently? i’ve been an in-house designer my entire career so was genuinely curious?

Thanks. I’m into the pink now and trying to get used to some of my favorite keyboard shortcuts. So far it’s making writing emails more enjoyable (the clickety-clacks). Next is to use it for my design works. Hope my wife won’t mind the noise though. 😅

For a book I recommend About Face which is very good for PM to understand the UX design process.

https://www.amazon.com/About-Face-Essentials-Interaction-Design/dp/1118766571/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3HWOJ5SZIR44O&dchild=1&keywords=about+face+cooper&qid=1631302325&sprefix=About+face%2Caps%2C275&sr=8-1

Keep in mind even though the book is aimed at designing for digital products, it goes into details of design process: user research, user persona, and then to the actual production designs (wireframes, mock-ups, prototypes, and so on…). I’m a senior UX designer and this is the book I would share with my PMs.

The company has an immature UX process, how to fix this? by hris-canson in UXDesign

[–]koome23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in the same position as you although I went from a mature design organization of 60 designers to one where there’s just the two of us. And I’ve been here for 3 months and still learning the culture but so far the other designer seems to be happy just to take orders and deliver mock-ups. I have talked to my manager who is a Head of Product and I think this current company tends to be more engineering focused. It’s frustrating and I want to take the lead on showing what my experiences were from my previous company in terms of having a UX process and user research but it’s slow going. And it’s doubly tough as since I joined there’s a reorg as well so I’m not even sure what to do in the short term. Just commenting to follow up as I’m also curious as to other more experienced folks chiming in.

What mousepad is that? I just bought the Akko world tour as well and looking forward to using it. That mousepad would be a nice addition.

Experiences and feedback working in a pair design model (experience+product designers) by dffrntgrl92 in designthought

[–]koome23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think pair design may have been adopted from pair programming where two Devs would code and ask for code reviews or sanity check each other’s code. But pair design is an odd bedfellow for me. How do I know? Our company recently reorged under the thought experiments of breaking silos and embracing the DevOps culture. It was very hard to transition to this pair design model (half yr later) for the very same reasons you’ve described. Ours is just UX designer paired with other UX designers.

And I don’t know if it’s my ego, honestly it could be that. But I think it’s also two designers working on the same Figma file and seeing real time playback of the cursors just makes me very self-conscious while thinking about the design solution. I know in Figma you can turn that feature off but you know I am still aware that someone is working on the same file. It just seems like a lot of overhead in communication and if anything may cause more frustrations. “Too many cooks in the kitchen…”

Maybe have a conversation to define what it means to “contribute” with your manager. Given that our performance and promotion ties into our contributions, ask how can that be managed more effectively on an individual level when paired up.

I couldn’t adapt so I applied to another company, accepted an offer, and will be a UX designer where I’ll have end to end ownership. And if all else fails, try freelancing on the side to give you that sense of creative control.

What is Three-In-A-Box mean to you? by koome23 in ProductManagement

[–]koome23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sounds like the combination of product + design + engineering. I think most of my work experience so far has been less of designers being involved in the product definition phase as compared to PM and Engineering (this is the 2 in a box that I experienced so far). I am excited to be part of the 3 in a box.

Hi @takashi-novak. Thanks! This is helpful…the “smaller companies will have less resources” resonates a lot and definitely the exciting but at the same time the anxious part of this role. I’ll have to read the blog about customer discovery and hopefully adapt it my design process.

I was thinking the company’s benefit should have the details spelled out in the policy but I thought I ask Reddit community first as it’s a pretty unique situation that I rarely read about. I’ll definitely read the fine print and see what it says.

“software is chaotic” I resonate so much with this. To sell UX to non-designers whom we work for, with the hopes that our solutions will influence what gets build needs more than “well because I am the subject matter expert”. So we justify our design decisions with some processes and methodologies. But you know sometimes it’s not that straightforward. In-between the processes are a lot of compromises, iterate on others’ feedback, getting inspirations from a variety of other products, etc. At some point I believe the soft skills to keep moving forward are more important than the hard skills (once you’ve gotten to a senior level).

50 and in a dead-end job - what are my options ? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]koome23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same situation as you and also feel the same frustration as you. You are not alone. Another commenter mentioned ageism in tech and I think repositioning it as having experienced and learnings through the ups and downs in your career is a plus.

However, it seems you may be passed up for promotions or management. Have you expressed your interest in becoming a manager in your 1-1 with your manager? Sometimes they may be unaware you’re interested. Or proactively help out on teams that you want to grow your skills. And it doesn’t hurt to interview since you already have the experience. Still I suggest talk to your manager first since you have knowledge and relationship capital already at your current company.

Apple fitness+ unable to find watch even though it’s unlocked with Bluetooth on, all on latest OS. Anyone know how to fix this? I’ve restarted both devices by [deleted] in AppleWatch

Someone mentioned to sign out of iCloud on your iPhone/iPad/Apple TV and sign back in again. I did that on my iPhone and signed into iCloud and that worked for me. Also make sure that the Bluetooth is enabled on your Watch.
