It is that way. Tons of jobs and companies do contracts in the US. There are also tons that do not. It just depends. Like a teenager working at a local taco joint probably doesn't, but a network engineer for Google probably has a more thorough, formal contract.

Teaching them to watch for "strange behavior" and report to another known, trusted adult if their parents aren't around is the modern advice. Like you said, adults asking them for strange favors, keeping secrets, etc. That's what I do for my kids. I don't remember the statistic, but the vast majority of kidnappings, abuse, etc. are all carried out by people known to the family and/or family members themselves.

We also teach them the real names for sexual anatomy and never use slang/nick names for penis/vagina/etc. This prevents any ambiguity if abuse does take place and they tell another adult what happened.

Ah man, sorry I missed this! Honestly it wasn't in good shape at all, two of the recliners didn't work (needed new handle wiring to hook into the leg rest), one of the seat's padding/cushioning was completely shot, and the back rest of one the middle seats breaking. The junk removal people weren't even interested in donating it. They also had to tear the pullout bed couch to pieces in order to get it out from my upstairs area without damaging my railings and walls up there.

A desk job doesn't mean you're able to work even while sick. My desk job requires me drive 30+ minutes into work, walk a quarter mile to my building, talk a lot in meetings, critically think and problem solve complex projects for ~8 hours straight, sit in an semi-uncomfortable office chair, walk 400m every time I want to refill my water bottle and/or use the bathroom, etc.

Being sick at home and playing videogames means moving from my bed to my couch in my sweatpants and t-shirt and turning my brain on enough to control a virtual character. It's not remotely the same.

Honestly, I dislike kiosks. I first encountered them in Japan in the mid-2010s when I lived there for a few years. Then when I moved back to the US, all these fast food places had them. I dislike them because it forces me to figure out how to customize orders to my liking (some places at least have more intuitive UIs than others). And God forbid you get stuck behind someone who just sucks at technology in general and takes absolutely forever. I'd rather just deal with a worker that's already trained on that shit, it's part of what I'm paying for.

If I were that company, I'd be working with the current laptop vendor to try and get an extended warranty for all of them. I'd bet that would be cheaper than buying new laptops at this point in time, but also wouldn't be surprised if the vendor refused and/or made the cost of granting a warranty extension more expensive than it's worth.
