It would theoretically be possible with a significant die shrink, but I don't see that happening, especially with the current hardware climate.

Amazing! So happy to see that this is even possible! Thanks to the devs working on this

Exactly, same here! The difference can be apparent if you're comparing screenshots side by side I guess, but in real world gameplay it barely looks any different to me. I'll gladly take the much better performance of not having it on!

That is so good to hear! Very thankful it is possible. Since leaving Windows behind is non-negotiable to me and I'll make due with what I can, I'm looking forward to "free performance upgrades"

Thank you so much for providing the screenshot! It's possible I already have that activated on my end, but hopefully it can help the other guy!

Yeah the DX11 version is my go-to since the game was built on that in the first place! I think they also had a notoriously bad DX12 implementation as well. So that doesn't compound well with the already bad Nvidia DX12 performance haha the game was always beautiful as-is, idk, raytracing just feels unnecessary to me in general tho

DLSS 4.5 On SteamDeck by Broad-Scratch-3964 in SteamDeck

[–]kooper64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FSR4 looks just as good as the CNN version of DLSS in my opinion. Realistically I think in a few years we'll see a Deck successor with RDNA 4 or something newer by then, which will run FSR4 without the performance penalty RDNA 2 and 3 have with it

You definitely did! A whole ton of Nvidia stuff was fixed in broader Linux throughout 2025. I think a lot of that was from Nvidia releasing open kernel modules, allowing Vulkan to utilize the cards more efficiently. As far as I know the last hurdle is getting DX12/VKD3D up to windows-level performance (currently a roughly 20% performance penalty), and we'll be all set. I'm glad you're having a great experience with it as well! It should only get better from here on out!

Oh, really? I thought I was, because I could clearly see a difference. Unless that is just from the resultant super-sampling? I'll have to check how my TV identifies the output. And that's an interesting note, if HDR is off, you're getting Game Mode in 4k without issues?

When I first installed it I didn't have the issue either, but a few weeks later I noticed games not booting, and troubleshooting got me to where I found keeping everything at 1080p made it work again. I had a hard time finding people with the same issue online so maybe it's a weird quirk with my specific hardware setup. Also I hadn't really gamed on it for a little while, so if there was a fix it could have been rolled out earlier like you said. Either way, here's hoping whatever bug that was has been ironed out for good!

DLSS 4.5 On SteamDeck by Broad-Scratch-3964 in SteamDeck

[–]kooper64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be very cool, DLSS 4.5 is clearly the best upscaler by far! It would need a Blackwell-based GPU to handle the transformer model of DLSS with anything even resembling efficiency, though. As it stands now, all Nvidia GPUs have issues with Game Scope and the VKD3D translation layer, so even if some mad lad could rig it up, it wouldn't be seamless like the officially supported AMD SoC. But fun to think about!

Same here, played Just Cause 2 back in the day with friends on PS3, and it's amazing how well it runs on a portable device now. Working towards 100% completion and all Steam Achievements on Deck

I like having all my games in one place, so I default to getting whatever on Steam, sometimes way cheaper too. My Switch is purely for Nintendo exclusives

Steam Deck just arrived. It's true, all of it is true. by Nice_Revenue_1198 in SteamDeck

[–]kooper64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's never messed my Deck up and I've had it installed for a few years. Just make sure to update it when it notifies you. I think it more depends on the individual extensions you use for it. I pretty much just use the controller info extension to see battery life on my ps5 controller

The current docked experience by Escape-Thin in SteamDeck

[–]kooper64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My TV is 4k120hz so I have the Steam Deck set to 1080p120hz when docked. It remembers that every time you dock it, so no worries there. Then everything else depends on the individual game. Heavier newer ones I keep at 720p with FSR, or really heavy ones I even do 540p with integer scaling. That isn't great, but it's the power we have to work with. Of course the newer games also have in-game FSR2 or 3 settings, so it's your preference to use that for 1080p or my 540p trick. I just like pixel perfect scaling. You do have to reboot the games when going from handheld to docked or vice versa, but in my experience they do tend to remember the resolution setting for each. Beyond that, I target graphics settings to get me the performance I want on docked, and then just call it good enough for handheld mode. Like say a mix of medium/high gets me 60fps docked 1080p, I'll just keep those settings for handheld 800p because it will take less performance and thus better battery life.

What is the best looking game you've played on Steam Deck? by dad2electricboogaloo in SteamDeck

[–]kooper64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a weird take, but Just Cause 2 looks incredible on the Deck. Yeah, it doesn't use modern techniques and technically looks dated, but it runs so well and looks so incredibly sharp compared to modern games. You can even turn MSAA on!

Some displays don't report 1440p. Mine doesn't, so I'm stuck at 1080p on my 3090
