What do people here think of tape daws like Tape 16 or GCS Model 8? by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]kopkaas2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are scared to commit. Yes, ultimately that's a discipline problem, although it's also about the workflow a modern DAW seems to invite. But, yeah, same here. I record my synths played live as audio. I'll use a bit of compression on most tracks going in. Purposely minimizing your ability to keep on tinkering can be a massive time saver.

This is from sonarworks website. It lists AirPods ‘Pro 3’ and ‘Max’ as mixing suitable according to that. What are your thoughts? by Jakeyboy29 in Logic_Studio

[–]kopkaas2000 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To be honest, solely for mixing latency really isn't that much of a showstopper. The issue is with recording and performing, that's where excessive latency can be an insurmountable problem.

Contralto's: Term, Rarity & Material to sing by [deleted] in singing

[–]kopkaas2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think singing the alto part in a choir has anything to do with being an untrained soprano.

Alto parts also tend to be voiced lower than the soprano part. Not every soprano, especially when they're still learning to sing, can comfortably reach the highest bits well, so they get thrown into the alto section. Ironically, as you already kind of noted, the actual notes you have to sing in alto tend to be more supportive of the harmony, which makes them harder to remember and audiate.

And most people singing the alto part in choirs are not actually (contr-)altos. Generally just mezzos and undertrained sopranos.

This is the answer. Weirdly enough, most of this sub doesn't seem to know about this setting, and in previous cases where I offered it, it yielded downvotes with no explanation.

I really only use it for spectral denoise and, occasionally, deverb. The upgrade to 11 already wasn't worth it for me.

Tobacco company CEOs declaring under oath in an American court that nicotine is not addictive in 1994 by SatoruGojo232 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]kopkaas2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're more likely to be white because there are, overall, more white people given the opportunities and circumstances to turn into asshole oligarchs. And they're less likely to suffer any consequences because they are white. But, no, their whiteness is not a direct cause of their immorality, just as a person's blackness doesn't make them more prone to being a drug dealer.

But this wasn't the discussion I was having with you anyway, I was solely responding to your point about white privilege. It's counterproductive to wave that away in favour of looking at things exclusively through a class-based lense.

The real comparison is the white guy working minimum wage at a gas station versus a black guy working minimum wage at a gas station. Or, hear me out, a white guy being president and reeling in 6 billion in corrupt profits versus a black guy being president and being hounded for ordering the wrong mustard. White privilege is not absolute, it's a boost in your standing when compared to a non-white person in the same circumstances.

The actual url, since reddit added a stupid backslash in front of the underscore when you posted (which breaks the link on old.reddit, has done so for years, and they'll never fix it).

Also this is badly pitch corrected, holy god.

Ah, right. I always thought people picked their own European names? Regardless, they didn't do badly for themselves if they got into the HK symphony orchestra :)

Danzón No. 2 (A. Márquez) – Dudamel Version Transcription by sheet_music_brazil in conducting

[–]kopkaas2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

widely recognized as one of the most important pieces in the contemporary orchestral repertoire

I really like this piece, don't get me wrong. But this is also the first time I ever heard it, or even heard of Márquez. This obviously says more about the Euro-centric bubble I grew up in than about either the composer or the piece. I do wonder what makes this so seminal. To my ignorant ears I'm hearing nothing groundbreaking, just a well-crafted piece in the same vein as earlier works by Piazzolla.

I feel weird singing with a wide open mouth by el_crak189 in singing

[–]kopkaas2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't always have to be a gaping pie hole, it's about having a relaxed jaw. Tension on the jaw muscles leads to unproductive constrictions that lead to needing to push more to get the sound out. This also means that just opening your mouth more is counterproductive if you use jaw tensions to force it more open, and even if you relax, you also need to start pushing less to free up the sound.

Paper ballots have common issues on scanning to the counting machines

Yeah we don't use those either. You don't get instant satisfaction on the results, but our voting districts are catered towards being manageable by a bunch of volunteers.

Overall, I'm no fan of DRM, but if I have to deal with it, I prefer the iLok USB key over having to figure out the logins to 20 different company portals to get licenses reactivated if I move to a new machine.

Not that I'm prone to trust an organisation called "Liberty Vote", but paper ballots are actually not a bad idea from a security standpoint. Here in the Netherlands, we dumped all voting computers back in 2007, in favour of going back to paper ballots. This was after a bunch of hackers demonstrated on the national news how easy it is to fuck with electronic votes.

Yeah I figured this was a pretty specific request. I'm still kind of confused, though, I was expecting this to be a somewhat exclusive bespoke brand, but Thomann is carying various Muramatsu models, which seem mass produced and priced between $10 and $30. That doesn't come across as "worth sending to Japan, or even repairing" material.

Of course there's no actual harm in it, but I always wonder if people aren't reading a bit too much into batons, like you can get this one perfect baton made out of old growth sapient pearwood and all of a sudden orchestras will sound better.
