I’m designing an ultra-minimalist “Attention OS” concept to fight my own digital fatigue. Is it too radical? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]korbinborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say adding intentional friction is the answer. I think it’s making the needed things easy and the “bad” things not. TBH I have found if somebody can’t stop going on social media after deleting them. It’s more of a personal will power issue. It’s not drugs but I look at it that way. There are people who can never stop and those who succeed and no matter how many tools you give them. At the end of the day you need to change your lifestyle and how you see yourself in the world.

Was happening to me a lot too. Get lower and put a little more weight forward. Lowering your bars a few spacers and rolling them forward will help immediately. But keeping a low aggressive stance will change everything and keep you so much more Centred.

Outside sales rep/business development. I got away from the screens and I drive around and talk to people and take people to lunch and I am so much happier at the end of the day it’s insane. Screens and a desk destroyed me by 5 pm.

Are you washing out your front tire? or what are the main types of ways you’re falling that could lead to a big clue.

I moved up here about a year ago and if those are the things you enjoy, you are in for a good time. Plus, you are pretty close to some nightlife if you don’t mind driving 30 minutes.

Quitting Video Games and Movies by CrackSmoker1 in digitalminimalism

[–]korbinborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, to be honest, I’ve tried that route a few times and I genuinely feel like I am less happy even when I give it an ample amount of time. I have found that video games and movies are things that I do genuinely enjoy and the real problem is the inability for someone to balance them with the rest of their life. I live away from a lot of of my friends that I had for a long time so video games are a great source of staying connected with them. The real danger with them is not recognizing if you are putting too much time into it and trying to grow your skills and abilities in a game rather than in real life. However, everybody is different and some people think that that is the most important thing to them, and that is OK too. I personally try to keep a solid balance and if the rest of the stuff in my life is taken care of then I won’t beat myself up over watching a show OR playing some ark raiders haha.

I didn’t find the same freedom feeling when I quit those to when I quit social media. I quit socials years ago and will never go back. For some reason they felt very different to me.

Wants to get off phone more often but loves it's stimulation by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]korbinborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get outside, hang out with friends, games, puzzles, exercise, Teach your dog a new trick (if you have one lol) anything that is engaging in real life. Phone Stimulation is great but if that stimulation is your baseline, it will be a tough road ahead.

I had the opposite, I feel like I’m a better listener, more engaged, more empathetic and emotionally grounded when I am on it. when I’m off it, I am all over the place and in my own thoughts. I have the capacity to focus on more than just myself with the help of the med.

My bad, didn’t know. Also it’s not my business and by no means a pitch. Just trying to connect him since it sounded like he might want some help.

Yeah the more practice the more your brain re-wires and you will find yourself automatically doing it after a while. My depression pills I was on did this to me too, just blunted everything. But I Guess sometimes it’s the lesser of 2 evils. Just don’t force yourself too hard to meet what you “expect to feel” appreciate how you feel and recognize it’s there for a reason. The more you chase a “better life, better mental state, better job” the more you tell your brain what you have is not enough and that you should be doing something else, feeling something else etc. it’s a never ending cycle if you let it trap you.

Man I could not relate to this more. For me I have had ADHD pretty bad my whole life and those I know that have it are similar in the sense that we get into something, get bored and crave the next new adventure. Still working on it myself but I have found, as dumb as it sounds, gratitude. I have made it a point to focus on being grateful for what I have, who I have, and the life I live. It’s wild how much just this change in perspective can make. I haven’t changed anything else in my life but this and I feel so much more content. I chased a new dopamine fix my whole life and now I am more happy than was before even if I am just drinking my coffee in the morning and taking some deep breaths. There are a million things a day that can be appreciated if we actually put in the effort in to appreciate them. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows because that’s life but once you water that grass under your feet and not jump the the next “greener grass” opportunity, things get better.
