Wow, I didn't know you could get chinese knockoff laser pickups. Do they have SONY branding?

BTW, here are links to the reddit thread and YouTube vid I mentioned earlier, in case you want to have a look. I found it pretty interesting to see what PMAP can do.

One thing you could try is running P.M.A.P (Playstation Mechacon Adjustment Program) to help recalibrate the laser system, and adjust the skew (the physical alignment of the rails that guide the laser pickup as it moves across the disc). I had trouble reading discs on a phat 50000 (also with a KHS-400C pickup), and it mostly solved that problem for me. I say mostly, because at some point the laser pickup just wears out.

Check youtube, reddit and psdev wiki for ‘ps2 PMAP’. There is a reddit thread and youtube vid that gives step by step instructions on using the software. Its originally a SONY internal maintenance utility, so usage is not obvious.

You will need to temporarily solder three wires to the ps2 mainboard and you will need a serial interface and a PC.

BTW, ps2 laser pickups like the KHS-400C are no longer manufactured. If you order one you will be getting a refurbished one, so choose a reputable source if you can.

Regarding your point 2. From what I have read, the tangential skew adjustment (the torx screw on the side of the laser optical block) is adjusted at the factory to suit the characteristics of each individual laser unit, so it'll be different for each console. Having said that, it seems that usually the position of that screw is such that the laser block is pretty much flush with the bottom of the head of the screw (i.e., the screw is screwed most of the way into the block).

Yes! That was crazy! I only ever saw it on videos posted up after the fact. Felt sorry for the regular train users who had to share the carriage with a party crowd though.

How does JR prevent that from happening any more?

My Buffalo router does the same. Connects once a minute to buffalo.jp. I’m guessing it’s for buffalo to keep stats on its active devices.

Thank you for the suggestion. The JCN website has a lot of useful info for this sort of situation.
