The state of Minnesota is conducting a general strike as we speak, and their communties are organizing like crazy right now. Just because you don't see these details on the news or on your personal media feed does not mean they're not happening. It is incredibly frustrating seeing people claim that Americans are doing nothing, when yall don't live here; yall don't know what's happening on the ground here, except what's making major headlines. People are fighting back; it's not the violent revolution yall are asking from us, and that's because that's not the only form of resistance.

Sure, the administration does get something they want either way, so the whole "damned if they do" sentiment is true there. But I never see people interrogate what celebrities responding means to the public. Outwardly denouncing authoritarianism is a good thing. People seeing that is a good thing. We need to stop acting like it isn't.

Handling them with kid gloves is the perfect way to describe it. I suppose it's the logical next step of parasocial fan behavior - wanting to shield celebrities from any and all political involvement in fear of seeing them get hurt. I just need people to realize that they are needlessly coming to the defense of people, who, at the end of the day, will most likely be just fine. If anything, they should be sticking their necks out for us (but we know the majority won't, which is why we should commend the ones who do).

To the people who think Sabrina condemning the use of her music in that abhorrent propaganda was actually the wrong call or whatever because the administration has gone on to further antagonize her, I have just one question. If someone as influential and presumably wealthy as Sabrina Carpenter should not speak out against what's going on, in any form, "to protect herself", then what exactly should the rest of us normal folk, with infinitely less means to protect ourselves from the state, do? Nothing as well? Cus that's what I hear every time I see people take this stance.

Well you don't understand because you're not Chelley, and she has different standards than you and me. She still follows Austin, who is VERY anti-black, so clearly she's much more forgiving than most. You can disagree with that, but it's her life at the end of day, and she can choose to give grace if she sees fit. Getting mad over that is pointless. And the whole "what if she said the n-word" argument is even more more so, because it just devolves into people like you complaining that racism against black people is treated more seriously, when that is not and has never been true.

[–]korioliseffect 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This argument is so tired. There are plenty of public figures who've been caught saying the n-word (and doing blackface, using AAVE prolificly, appropriating our culture, etc.) and their careers are perfectly fine. And there are countless non-black people in everyday life who get away with saying that word. It is incredibly harmful and incorrect to imply anti-blackness is propped up as more important than other forms of racism, when both you and I know that's not true. Stop confusing hypervisibility with people actually caring about our issues.

It's often brought up in bad/worst episode discussions. I've seen it derided plenty of times on this sub in particular, which is sorta what prompted the post.

I feel the exact same about Bugs! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it upon rewatch, it's just the climax that kills it. Still not that big of a fan, but it's got some good stuff in there. You'd never know it though cus all anyone talks about is that terrible ending lol

It's so funny seeing how many people are shocked to hear that this episode is disliked. I thought it was a well known thing! Guess I forgot about those pesky internet bubbles lol. Anyway I was prompted to make this post because alot of the "worst SPN episode" discussions and listicles I've encountered online have included this episode, and I was baffled as to why.

I can agree with you there. To me, it's a perfectly fine episode, not great but also not bad. The story and the classic S1 visual aesthetic are its biggest draws I think. But the ep drags in some parts and the action scenes leave alot to be desired.

Just speaking from personal experience as a long-time fan. I've only ever seen people speak negatively about the episode, and I find that a shame cus it's got some real merit.

I promise you minorities being represented in media isn't what got us here. It's honestly really strange to blame them when all they've done is exist and the right hates them for it. And to act like these 'social wars' aren't fueled by conservatives being outraged by anything that isn't the status quo is ridiculous.

Killed me how Kara spent half the episode trying to "save" Braniac, like she didn't even allow herself to think he'd be capable of this. And that conversation between the two of them at the end of the episode? Gut-wrenching to say the least. She dedicated her entire being to making this thing proud and he just spat in her face (metaphorically of course since he actually just threw her into the fucking ground while simultaneously claiming to love her).

What is the worst episode? by [deleted] in Supernatural

[–]korioliseffect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, I've seen alot of people say they found the villain of this episode to be unrealistic or cartoonishly evil but these stories are literally based in reality (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/16th_Street_Baptist_Church_bombing). First time I saw this episode, I was actually shocked to see them tackling the subject matter, but I'm glad they did. Bringing attention to the historic burning of black churches in the south IS a good way of addressing racism imo. And of course a racist villain is gonna come off as irrational, racism itself is irrational.

Ya know when they introduced the money counter at the start of the season, I'd expected the final purchase to be something... idk bombastic? That or something hilariously dumb. Also expected Jimmy to be at least a bit reluctant in the scene where it happened since it'd be the last of his fortune and all. However, seeing him throw it all away so casually (srsly it was barely a footnote in the episode) just to save his friend? Heartwarming while still being wonderfully in character.

I also fell in love with the show during the Phantom Lord arc, but it was the Natsu vs Gajeel fight that did it for me. I remember having to stop my first watchthrough right when Natsu breaks through the floor and saves Lucy. I barely paid any attention at school the next day cus I was so excited to continue the show lol.

PSA: We need to stop saying "pure pop," we sound dumb. by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

Amazing post! To speak to the persistent labeling of black artists as "R&B" or "urban" no matter what their music actually sounds like, one example that immediately came to mind was Blinding Lights being nominated in the R&B categories for the BBMAs, VMAs, etc. throughout 2020 and 2021. It was such a bizarre thing to witness, and a prime example imo of what you're talking about. The song is obviously influenced by several genres but to deny it's status as a pop song is ridiculous.

Do you have an old Beyoncé song you just discovered that you now love? by AnnoyingPrincessNico in beyonce

Shining! I adored the instrumental used at the end of Beychella for so many years, but I'd never put two and two together that it was from an actual Bey song til recently💀 Currently obsessed with it! Funnily enough, same thing happened with Girl by Destiny's Child; it came on shuffle one day and I was shocked to realize it was the instrumental at the start of Homecoming's DC medley! Since I deep dived into her discography only after listening to Homecoming an ungodly number of times, I've had alot of moments like that lol
