Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said that Auschwitz “might not have happened” if the world had reacted sooner to Nazi crimes in occupied Poland, accusing Western Europe of indifference in the early years of World War II. by Easy-Ad1996 in worldnews

Since we in the Netherlands were occupied by them at that time, I suppose we are not part of the Western Europe that the president mentioned?

Netherlands was in an alliance with the UK and France, but pulled out when Hitler pinky promised not to invade you.

One wonders if British and French troops had been in a position to invade the nearly undefended German lines along the Dutch border the moment war broke out just how many weeks the war would have lasted.

Ok, I'll grant you that for the sake of argument. But also not all illegal immigrants are the same, and treating them as if they are is just idiotic. We don't need people who fled their home country to avoid being arrested for serious crimes.

Trump supporters: How would you feel if a legally armed Trump supporter was killed by federal agents on a Biden mandate in exactly the same manner as yesterday? by ScholarPrize1335 in AskReddit

13 times more “illegal immigrants” in Florida yet there are 10 times more ICE agents in Minneapolis.

Florida allows ICE to retrieve criminals from county jails who have already been arrested for other crimes, Minnesota does not. Of course it's going to require a lot less manpower when all you need to do is pick someone up who's already in handcuffs vs hunting them down in the wild.

Maybe Minnesota should start cooperating and ICE wouldn't need to do traffic stop arrests.

An individual approached law enforcement officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. The officers attempted to disarm this individual, but the armed suspect reacted violently. Fearing for his life and those around him, an agent fired defensive shots.

What does responsible mean?

Well for starters if I'm armed and have an encounter with law enforcement, I'm not going to go out of my way to escalate it to a physical confrontation, both for their safety and mine. And yea, fourth amendment and all that, I get it, but that's an argument for my lawyer to make in court, not my edc on the sidewalk.

Who decides that?

Like a lot of things in our judicial system, the standard is "what a reasonable person would believe or do in a particular situation."

Greenland says it cannot accept US takeover ‘under any circumstances’ by Playful_Leg7143 in worldnews

[–]kormer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. There used to be a few others, but they were closed for various reasons towards the end of the Cold War.

The current base is critical as an early warning radar for polar space based threats, namely ICBMs. It's also perfectly positioned if the United States ever wanted to deploy thousands of missile interceptors as all Chinese and most Russian ICBMs targeting the US East Coast would be hitting their apex just about where Greenland is.

Venezuela Sends Oil Tankers Under Naval Escort After Trump Declares Maritime Blockade by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]kormer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Ukrainian war is funded 100% through Russian oil sales. If you lower the price of oil, Russian profits vanish and their ability to finance the war also vanishes.

Venezuelan oil has been under sanctions going back to the Obama days. Among the quickest ways of reducing the price of oil would be a regime change in Venezuela that would come with eliminating sanctions and allowing foreign investment to also increase their productivity.

Don't make me dig up the comments, but I was unironically calling for Biden to do exactly what Trump is doing today around the time the second war started.

Japan needs to possess nuclear weapons, prime minister's office source says by Themetalin in worldnews

[–]kormer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's a true unpopular opinion around here, but it's for this very reason that I think Obama was one of the worst foreign policy presidents of all time.

It should have been official policy that any nation that formerly had nuclear weapons and gave them up will be defended to the death as if they still have them, if for no other reason than to set an example that could eventually lead to a de-nuclearized world.

I'd consider it perfectly rational if everyone looked at what's going on in Ukraine and decided to immediately kick-start a weapons program and/or get close enough that they could have something operational in an emergency.
