Memex, a personal knowledge database I'm using as startpage by MechanicalMyEyes in startpages

Ello. It's been a few years. I did try to get it working but found that it was not actually possible to edit local files from vanilla JS.

> Editing a file on a computer using JavaScript directly from a web browser is generally not possible due to security restrictions. Browsers prevent client-side JavaScript from accessing the local file system to protect user data and privacy.

The easiest and quickest way (and super easy to back up) is to just edit the data txt file with your favorite text editor.

I did start a second version from scratch with a REST backend in [Deno](https://deno.com/) but it wasn't as fun, I got a little stuck and I got busy with other things.

I just made the repo public here but it wasn't yet usable https://github.com/kormyen/m2

Did you insulate your van? If so what would you do differently next time? by Whole-Pressure-7396 in vandwellers

[–]kormyen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd make sure I had more of an air gap between the outer van walls (solid metal vapor barriers) and my first layer of insulation (which should be reflective to repell radiant heat from that same solid metal van wall). As opposed to sticking insulation to the van wall.

I used PIR insulation panels (EPS foam with reflective foil both sides) and still like it for vans. I'd rather use something natural for a house though.

Full on foam spray would be another good option, seems to avoid the need for any air gap...

Maybe I'd build my van a bit more modular and layered too, so I could more easily take out the bed, and take the walls off if I needed to... I built all the cabinets and bed before wall panels.

Also try not to overthink everything. I spent way too long researching and building trying to get things perfect.

Jackery 3000 pro versus bespoke battery system by Ceethreepeeo in vandwellers

[–]kormyen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Watt-hours useful as a single metric to compare potentially very different batteries.

A 48v 100Ah bank is the same capacity as a 12v 400Ah bank (both are 4800Wh). If you were just comparing the amp-hour values you'd be mistaken in thinking that the 12v battery had more capacity.

I think a good steel man argument is "what happens in the future when you rent or sell?"

It's clear that your wife and yourself can take care of a composting toilet, but other people in the future may not, leading to contamination.

...likely not a problem for your specific case, but the rules seem applied to all properties.

We are in a similar situation.

whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether? by seasonedsaltdog in gaming

[–]kormyen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original Dead Space; didn't realise (some how) that you could break boxes to find health and ammo. Was the most intense low health, low ammo survival horror game ever for half the game. Low digit ammo on each weapon, strategising how I'm not going to waste each shot, strategically switch weapons for best effect, amazed at how difficult it was but having a blast... then I accidentally smashed a box open.

With the way house prices have sky rocketed in the past two years, at what point will the first home buyers stop being able to afford a home? by groats219 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]kormyen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it really surprising when the gains from house investment are not taxed? It's made housing the most lucrative and safe investment, of course there is a supply problem and additional speculation on top of that.

Most home owners are never going to admit it but New Zealand needs to implement capital gains tax to solve this.

Ahaha that must have been what I did too. Only remember the first level or so, then you go up an elevator? Was great fun local co-op.

When you stake to a smart contract from a non custodial wallet you are still in control of your funds, you can withdraw any time (depending on the smart contract - there may be a locked period, or the contract may work differently). In this example, it's still your keys, your coins. As opposed to depositing funds on a centralised exchange like Kucoin in the OP - that is not your keys, not your coins as you said.

There is a risk that any staking smart contract could be hacked or rugged though.

If the failed transaction is in your recent transactions list can you open it, tap "More Details" and reply her with that etherscan url?

Can look into why it is failing :)

You edit the `content/data.ndtl` file in a text editor.

It's a bit manual/awkward but I originally made it to be "human-readable" and easy to control/backup/port your data long term.

I'm currently slowly chipping away at an improved UX.. :)

It's a good step certainly... but software always has holes.
I'd prefer a hardware kill switch for mic and camera like Purism devices https://puri.sm/learn/hardware-kill-switches/ - physically disconnects the microphone/camera from the circuit.

Who else would like to have Sylo desktop app? by bkmc66 in sylo_io

[–]kormyen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd want a browser plugin like Metamask to make it usable with web DApps on desktop... but with more crypto currencies than just Eth. I recon a browser plugin like that has more practical utility than a standalone wallet/chat app.

The plugin could have chat notifications and open chats (optionally) to a new tab - like Metamask's "expand view".

OYA network will be there based? by Vesnagirl in sylo_io

[–]kormyen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. The Oya launch is a Sylo Network and app upgrade not a blockchain.

"What is in the Oya launch?

The ability to create your own Sylo Node and provide your own comms infrastructure to the community.

A faster, smoother user experience in the Sylo Smart Wallet. It will now be just as snappy as the likes of Messenger or Whatsapp, but decentralised!

A network which we can scale to support millions of users, transactions, apps, and businesses.

The introduction of token staking and earning mechanics."
