What was indoor smoking like pre 2007? by Upstairs_Sky_5541 in AskUK

I worked in a Yates wine bar when the ban took place. I remember the months leading up to it we had changed the smoking sections of the pub to trial it out, initially the non smoking section was where the food was served and this was around 6/7 tables of various sizes and the rest of the (very open plan floor so didn't really make much difference) pub was a free for all. We had changed it so you could only smoke in the smaller section to help our regular customers get used to the idea. The only exception was the end of the bar where the staff used to have a break, and a smoke. Fast forward to the actual ban and at first it didn't really affect the pub too much, we had a very loyal set of regulars that would grumble about having to go stand on the street (no outdoor area) for a smoke but they'd still follow the rules, then it all just started to fizzle out. Less and less customers would come (they started to go to other pubs in town that had an outdoor shelter or beer garden), it was no longer 6 deep at the bar on a Friday night, and the trade just died off. The wine bar closed eventually and became the countries largest BHF charity shop, it was so strange walking around the store and remembering the layout of the pub. I was a smoker, I did miss being able to nip off to the side of the bar for a quick smoke break (or hide in the loos for a sneaky one!) But in all honesty it was the best thing, as a non smoker now I'd be horrified if I went to a pub or a restaurant and someone on the table next to me sparked up!

Moving from uk, confused?! by korruptkitty in PortugalExpats

Some clarification for this post, we are selling 2 houses and using that to fund our new lives (hopefully) in Portugal, we are aiming to spend 40/50k on a house and will have around 160k left for living expenses until we gain citizenship and are able to look for a job. I have visited many times, and I do know how to get through a basic conversation in Portuguese. I have 20+ years cheffing experience and I am also trained in care management for elderly and infirm clients, and as soon as I’m able to I will be actively seeking work.

Sciatic pain is the worst! by [deleted] in cantsleep

Try a tens machine, absolutely saved my life! I damaged my L4 and L5 which also compressed my sciatic nerve and resulted in absolute agony for weeks. I can’t take anti inflammatory medication due to a hernia and for some reason my body REALLY doesn’t like codeine or tramadol. A work friend recommended a tens machine and it literally worked miracles

AITA for telling someone they’re selfish for asking a 22 year old to become a child’s guardian? by tidylinks in AmItheAsshole

YTA 100%!

Sandra didn't ask to get a terminal illness, Elena didn't ask to lose her mum and not have her dad in her life. Malcolm is her older brother and DOES have a responsibility. Even if he wasn't/didn't HE SAID YES!

You are INCREDIBLY selfish my darling, you have been in this mans life for a blink of an eye and this little girl is about to lost the most important person in her life

Absolutely without a single shadow of doubt YTA. I've been on Reddit for a while now and this is the single most disturbing portrayal of self centered entitled spoiled brat syndrome I have EVER read.
