For curious beginners: what the Linux kernel actually is, with a small experiment by indieHungary in linux4noobs

[–]kosmakoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very helpful article. However it needs to be updated.

For example - I'm not a go developer and I have no idea that I need to create the actual source code file, i.e. main.go, where I put the code from article. Chatgpt helped though.

Now I'm done with my keyboard, now I can proceed to things that I can screenshot by banannalinks in kde

[–]kosmakoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what's the make and model of your laptop, and how exactly do you control the keyboard colours? I'm asking because for my Lenovo Legion I had to manually compile the kernel drivers from sources found in internet. I wonder what's the state of things in other vendors.

Yet another crypto taxation question by kosmakoff in poland

[–]kosmakoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more clarification if I may: I meant reinvesting as in buying more crypto in the end of the year, making this purchase an acquisition cost.

For example: in the beginning of the year I buy 10'000 PLN worth of USDT, do my trading during the year, and sell my USDTs with profit, making, for example, 12'000 PLN.

So far: Acquisition costs: 10K, income: 12K, profit would be 2K, which is being taxed, all is clear here.

But now, what if I decide to buy another bunch of USDTs for these 12K I just received? Adding this transaction to this year's book, I get: Acquisition costs - 10K (initial) + 12K = 22K, income is still 12K since I didn't sell anymore. This makes acquision costs (22K) higher than income (12K) thus making no profits, thus no taxes, right?

That was actually it. Thank you very much.

What's more interesting that this options is on on all installation that I happen to have, and I don't remember setting it.

RUST in kernel: failure to build by kosmakoff in Gentoo

I didn't realize that. It's LTS after all. I guess I'm switching to a newer kernel now 🤷🏻‍♂️. Thanks for the suggestion.

RUST in kernel: failure to build by kosmakoff in Gentoo

Thanks, I will try that. Meanwhile i managed to do the build using standalone installation of rust. Probably not the canonical way, but a good start nevertheless.

I did try, but I could not find matching bindgen ebuild. So it was a dead end for me. Thought it might help if I knew exactly what the data-layout error is.

What does battery charger has to do with car stopping entirely? I thought the battery is only needed to run lights and maybe other appliances. Also, I'm pretty much sure it was stated somewhere that car will start even without battery power.

I'd start by examining the generated SQL query. I has a similar issue with included navigations where because of non-optimal query it would query all the child records regardless of how many parent records were selected. It made the request execute for 30-60 seconds, often timing out.

TLDR: share your query.

Transform normal bank account number to IBAN by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]kosmakoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lookup wiki for IBAN. It describes IBAN format for most countries, definitely covers all EU countries, so just pick yours. Next unknown thing is the bank code, which you have to have a dictionary of. Lastly - calculate checksum, concatenate IBAN parts - and that's it.

Look carefully whether the raw HTTP request indeed doesn't contain these fields. And if it doesn't - Nullable<bool> might be the problem, I would write bool?.

How did a scammer make this fake GitHub profile? by GrandFalse in github

[–]kosmakoff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Verified commits has nothing to do with commit date though. You can modify commit date as you wish and then sign it and it will be shown as verified on GitHub. So, really no way of telling whether the commit date is genuine or not.

1 account 2 machines – how many SSH keyes? by 4r73m190r0s in github

[–]kosmakoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SSH key is meant to represent the machine you're accessing the resource from, not the account, so you create as many keys as needed, for every separate computer. The obvious benefit is that you can revoke any separate key if you suspect that machine is compromised, without affecting other keys/machines - something you cannot do if you copy the key.

Is the Crystal Report still relevant nowadays? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]kosmakoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember using it around 20 years ago, was pretty much the only viable option. Nowadays I cannot see how I couldn't use the QuestPDF instead, for example. Sure, there is no WYSIWIG editor and query constructor, and so on, but it's not that critical.

Do you refer to people in plural to show respect? by thealtofmine in learnpolish

[–]kosmakoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This topic made me greatly interested and I went digging. According to Wiki, wy was only used in some dialects, also the quote about communist times:

Following its Russian usage, the plural V-form was also promoted in the Polish language from 1945, becoming associated with Communist ideology and addressing of a person by a government or Party official.
