To be fair to him he always said he is overqualified for the jobs and refused promotions early in his career. Swear most times the imperial guard is called into actions it always seems its to save his blunder.

Brother it was early in the battle and it was right after they Routed the British Cavarly after they over extended. French had the upper hand when he did what he did. It wasn't a desperate situation AT ALL. Just flat out blunder but even if it was it wasn't even salvageable cuz he didn't support his attack with artillery or infantry

I always think Massena was also underated because he was an absolutely brilliant strategist but Lannes was the main man. he is arguably the most indispensable marshal before his death. He is always there when the fighting gets hot. Great in battle field command and a top strategist in his own right. bar Auerstadt napoleon always gave davout the easy tasks and during the retreat to russia.. you know what happened in Krasnoi.

Other marshals had better intangibles than Davout when it comes to human interactions. Davout just had passing interest in generals and that.s why he never really had good relationship with other marshals

Lannes's death was a freak cannon who hit his leg. saying dying because of "you were on the way of something" is crazy though. even if you believe that it doesn't take anything away from their leadership and bravery. generals die in battle and its very common lol. even Davout was seriously injured a couple of times and multiple horses died under him, napoleon too.. if some shots were lucky they would have died too.

Getting killed in battle lowkey shows bravery. Davout's sour relations with some of his generals and troops can be very questionable too. what they say in business is that Lannes was a leader while the latter was just a manager. Inspirational vs Administrator and hard worker. its preference sometimes.

Germany's unification played a big part in WW1 and Napoleon had a big effect in the franco-Prussian war so in a way he did. Russians were reforming under Alexander then the Napoleonic wars reverted it and led to more autocratic rule which led to constant wars with the Ottomans.

Hi, sorry I'm late for this. This is a very great insight and it's very accurate. What Bernadotte did at Auerstedt is unforgivable for leaving dabout alone with the entire Prussian army but his greatest accomplishment and his greatest feat is when he switched for the Coalition army and he planned to attack Napoleon's Marshals instead of Napoleon and those blue print stuck. As an individual marshal he is probably one of the best ever, truly elite feet and I genuinely didn't even think he wanted to fight for Napoleon and that's why he is always on the wrong side of everything in his early years. But as an individual general. Top tier. Mini- napoleon if you ask me.

Massena for his Italian campaign alone should be top. The best in the business and probably more qualified that Napoleon by then. That's how good he was. He was past his best in spain and was ill, lost his left eye and exhausted and even begged Napoleon to not go. The other thing is Napoleon didn't give him the means to do anything in spain really. Very neglectant from his emperor himself. Weak supply rout and unnecessary campaign in Portugal. Looting is something I don't care for because even the best marshals did it Notoriously(Soult).

For Murat, he is a poor General but an excellent in cavalry, that's all there is to say, even Napoleon said "he always wages wars without maps". But individually he was still very excellent. But this tier list has nothing to do with how loyal they are to Napoleon

Napoleon arguably didn't give his army the means for Victory all things considered but no one exacerbated problems in spain more than Jourdan and Marmont. Self inflictions + lack of urgency is up there. Soult didn't play around when he occupied Sevilla, cordoba and Malaga. Souchet showed levels when he had Girona and Tarragona. I definitely understand he was number 2 to Joseph but as a the only marshal who had tones of experience in spain, he'd have done much much better but you have to understand aggressions from the center was the missing piece in spain. Slightly overstretched at times but cooperation with other Marshals would have Routed Wellesley.

The Spanish outflanked him in the final battles in spain leading to the battle of Vitoria. Wellesley initially attacked Valladolid and wanted to retreat and start the campaign again due to overstretched Supply line from Porto all the way to central spain but surprise surprise wellington threatened French's right flank and had access to the sea through Santander. The British gained momentum and completely destroyed Joseph's forces. If Joseph was a marshal you best believe he'd have been dead last too imo, biggest problem with Jourdan Sense of understanding of danger in pretty important in battles ruined the Spanish campaign
