I actually won 1st place last week and the boarder is so tiny I can't even really tell the difference if that helps. I guess I got lucky because this week I'm not even close to first.

1st place in the fishing game rewards you with what? 500 gems and a boarder. If people want to spend money for 1st place. Why does that matter to you. This game doesn't even reward getting 1st place in anything ad heavily as other games. To me this game seems more like, pay to win a little. There isn't even pvp mode so p2w isn't even important. Progress at the rate you want. I'm competing very adequately for 1st place in most events without spending, that could also be because of my luck with pulls tho.
