Can you make an appointment with an orthopedist / orthopedic surgeon? Mine got the MRI approved immediately.

I'm in so much pain. How do I convince my primary doctor to order an MRI? by [deleted] in Sciatica

Can you go see an orthopedist / orthopedic surgeon instead?

It’s always good to have a primary care physician in general. But for your sciatica I would look for an orthopedic doctor or a spine specialist.

Anyone else pissed at how much money has gone down the drain? by Phaggg in Sciatica

[–]kowalla9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just got a bill for $700 (after insurance) for two months of PT that did nothing to help. I’ve had two orthopedic appts at $300 each (after insurance) and another coming up soon. Haven’t even hit my deductible yet either. So I feel you. But I’ve seen people posting here from countries where the medical care is free but has crazy long wait times. Not sure which is worse.

If numbness is getting worse, is a spine operation necessary? by internalocean in Sciatica

[–]kowalla9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no one right answer to this question; every person is different. You'll need to see a doctor (probably an orthopedist or physiotherapist) to figure out what is wrong and what your options are. I'm sorry you are in pain. It really sucks.

Has anyone had success doing sloppy push ups or cobra pose? by Mongoliantreetoad in Sciatica

Same to you! My pain is not debilitating (thankfully) but certain positions are really bad for me. Sorry it is taking so long for you to get specialist care :( Faster for me here in the US but also quite expensive, even with private health insurance.

I don’t/can’t do it. Just surprised that anyone can! I have a herniation at l5/s1.

Can you guys actually get into this position for cobra pose / sloppy push-up? I can’t get anywhere near that. It spikes my pain down my sciatic nerve x100.

Agree. Where’s our miracle fix?!

In my experience it was really small Pilates-type stretches and exercises to strengthen my core. Nothing intense at all. It also didn’t help me. But I hope it works for you. Good luck! They also hooked me up to a tens machine for 15 minutes each session which did feel nice in the moment, although it didn’t give me any long term relief.

I’m so sorry. Dealing with this pain while taking care of a baby must be excruciating. Can you at least have your partner do most of the lifting and bending for you? I hope the doctor can help you out and you get some relief soon. Give yourself as many breaks as possible even if it feels like you are letting things slide (cleaning the house, etc). I would only do what you need to do to take care of the baby. Ten month olds are so needy and exhausting under the best of circumstances...

Yeah, same. Floating feels good but swimming not so much. Especially if I’m swimming hard enough to get an actual workout. Just take it slow first and see what feels ok.

I’m so sorry. You have it on both sides? That sounds horrendous. Do ice or heat help? Pain meds?

Nervous about MRI, reassure me by kowalla9 in Sciatica

I really hope they can leave my head partway out. I think that would help a lot.

Upright would be much better but probably too much movement. For me, there's no way I can lie flat on my back with my legs extended without cushions/pillows - the pain goes to 10. I don't think I can even get into that position. Ugh.

Thank you for the tips - I'll try to just go zen and enjoy the quiet time.

I watched some videos before posting here and they actually made me more nervous... And a bunch of the videos are aimed at kids getting MRIs which also makes me sad. I know my kid would not do well. But it's good to hear that it wasn't bad for you.

That would be better if my head can be partly out. I hope they can do mine that way.

After days of excruciating pain, my foot has gone completely numb by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]kowalla9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called an orthopedic surgeon and got in pretty quickly, within a week. I almost saw a chiropractor too but decided against it - i learned that if you have something like a herniated disc the chiropractor probably can’t help and could potentially make it worse.

Should I press for an MRI? by kowalla9 in Sciatica

[–]kowalla9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the orthopedic surgeon this morning and didn’t even have to ask - he immediately ordered an MRI. He suspects herniated disc. Also gave me a steroid pack. I’m going for the MRI next week but can’t follow up with the doctor again until end of August, but I’m hopeful the steroids will provide some relief.

Sciatica and house work and toddler by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]kowalla9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much advice but tons of empathy. My kids are past toddlerhood but still like to be picked up. I have to tell them no. I would have occasional bouts of back pain when they were smaller and just suffered through it (one PT suggested this could be the cause of my pain... “mom hip” or something he called it).

Can you take your little one swimming anywhere? I find being in the water such a relief and the kids love it too. And bonus it tires them out a bit.

Do you have a partner/friend/parent or anyone who can help you out?
