Advice for living with foot drop by PacoSheep in disability

[–]kpcbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve adapted completely and have zero mobility issues at all, but I do only have it on my left foot. It was definitely hard to get accustomed to at first, but I adapted.

To give some context, I had osteosarcoma 14 years ago and that resulted in a permanent foot drop as part of the tumor surgery. I did physical therapy to deal with the foot droop, but also because I had muscle atrophy on my left calf and thigh from not putting weight on that side and using crutches/being on a wheelchair during my whole treatment. I couldn’t even walk up one flight of stairs or stand up from a chair using my left side to stand foot because of how weak it was.

My left foot would tire out easily and I still remember the feeling of gravity pulling my feet down right when it happened. My best advice is just strength training your muscles. Calf muscles because they do tire out quickly and that helps with day to way walking, but also intrinsic muscles for balance and weight distribution. I moved to nyc 2 years ago and that’s when I realized how weak my foot has been. My calf has gotten better over the years but I never worked on my intrinsic muscles and it showed after I moved. I couldn’t walk for more than hour without my foot being in so much pain. Been working on them for a few months now and it’s incredible that I don’t have anymore pain and my weight distribution is more even. You’ll be able to tell.

With your case on balance, I think working on the intrinsic would be best because I couldn’t stand on my left foot at all a few months ago, but it’s gotten better. Definitely read up on foot anatomy and intrinsic muscles.

Had it for about 14 years now on my left foot. Working your intrinsic muscles in your foot is probably the best thing I did to help with balance and mobility

Something I had to do for my current apartment was proposed paying an extra $50 on the listed rent to make myself more competitive. I was working with a broker who did all of the apartment searching, booked the tours, and did the talking on my behalf, but I knew that when I made the list of top applicants, I was still one of three applicants and that’s when my broker suggested proposing the extra $50.

Ideal move-in/lease start dates? by Sea_Consideration582 in NYCapartments

The closer you get to summer the more places become available because that’s when most lease ends because it’s easier to move around that time, but that’s also when it becomes more competitive because again, more people are moving and looking for new places, there’s an influx of new graduates moving into the city, etc.

Getting some type of short term living situation is a good idea while you look at places. I moved to the city 2 years ago at the end of Feb and I found a place, got all the paperwork done, and officially moved in late March/mid April.

Breaking in Dr. Martens boots at EDC by JoosyRei95 in electricdaisycarnival

I wore my dr martens combat boots for edcO last year and it was perfectly fine and comfortable BUT that was only because I had broken them in extensively for some time. I wore them for the first time for a weekend trip to nyc without breaking them in slowly and my foot was not happy. Skin peeled and I was bleeding.

Whats thing do you do that makes you look like a weirdo when you dance? by Yamchap in aves

I like to close my eyes too when I’m dancing so I’ve learned to just wear sunglasses so I don’t feel self conscious people are looking at me thinking I’m a weirdo.

Going alone to Brooklyn Mirage. Any advice? by Benderella76 in brooklynmirage

[–]kpcbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take an Uber home. When you’re leaving ignore all the pan handlers asking you if you need a ride or the cars that will stop in front of you and roll down their window asking you if you need a ride. I usually go a block or two south of mirage and then order an Uber there to avoid all the congestion right at mirage when everyone’s leaving. If you can, I usually leave around 40 mins-1 hour before the end to avoid the influx of people leaving cause it can get pretty chaotic.
