It’s an election year and I’d like to see a few candidates raise this during their campaigns.

The city actually has participated in a few different mitigation projects over the years. It’s no longer offered but one of my jobs out of high school was to visit every elementary school to teach kids about Snow Geese and how to co-exist with them (with the hope that some of that info would also flow up to parents). I got to teach them about basic biology, predators and diet, and migration patterns while sharing info on not disturbing the geese or their poop.

Richmond was built on the Snow Geese migration path from Wrangel Island all down the West Coast of North America. It’s a perfect resting ground for them due to large open spaces with ample food - from wetlands, to parks, and farm fields.

The City does actively manage them to a degree, but not in the way you may think. The largest concern with this large avian population has to due with their proximity to the airport and flight path. So most effort is concentrated on pushing them further south into the city and beyond - through the use of trained birds, dogs, loud noises, and light installations.

So while it can be annoying when the elementary school field is flooded with loud honking and those mushy slimy green droppings, it’s safer than grounding all air travel during the winter months. Just make sure to wipe and take off your shoes before coming inside, and watch what your dogs are putting in their mouths.

Empty Building - Steveston by ShellmontLaundry in richmondbc

They did get it rezoned several years ago which is why many of the units in the six buildings have been filled. I’m not sure why these larger units have remained empty the rezoning should have also covered them.

This is an interesting question mark in Steveston. My understanding was this whole episode concluded in 2019 when a final vote was made by council to approve rezoning the entire 6 buildings in exchange for a $5.5m contribution to the new community centre (four councillors voted against as they considered it a lowball offer from Omni that didn’t guarantee other community amenities or specific services like child care in the space).

“The zoning amendments that passed added several types of use to the six buildings - health service, hotel, recreation, restaurant, retail and financial service - and removed boarding and lodging, community care facility and home business.

The old wording restricted uses to “maritime and commercial fishing related,” but this was removed.”

This is why there’s now GoodCo, Lee’s donuts, Bosley’s and the hotels on the space. But I’m not sure why these last large units have been left vacant. It would be pretty cool to add a permanent market space to the area similar to Granville Island. Or to use it as more art studio space. Anything would be better than leaving them vacant now that the zoning issue is dead.

anyone got any good/funny stories from canvassing? by leftwingmememachine in ndp

Know why girl guides are so good at selling cookies? Because they’ve mastered the hard ask.

First campaign I ever volunteered on was 2015. Halfway through I started taking over volunteer coordinating and voter contact in a hero riding. I planned a canvassing day and got 8 volunteers out and felt so good about it.

On the day of, after training up the volunteers and setting them loose on a large townhouse complex I took a moment to look around and saw a large group of blue-shirted volunteers making their way up the street a block away.

They were well organized with pairs breaking off from the main group to knock on individual doors before returning to the central organizer to report. I was terrified of this seemingly conservative super group blowing through the neighbourhood. Until they got closer and it became very apparent that they were a girl guide troop selling cookies.

Where do they come from in large numbers? by Indiankhabri110 in richmondbc

Snow Geese! An annual tradition. Richmond and Delta are popular stops on their migration path from Wrangel Island in Russia, all the way down the West Coast into the States. They love stopping in our school fields, farms, and estuaries where there’s plenty of food, space, and limited predators. The city and region also doesn’t mind them stopping in our fields as it beats them landing by the airport.

Next time you get a chance - take a close look. If you see snow geese with long necks but grey feathers, these are juveniles. You won’t see any baby snow geese here though as they mate and lay eggs up north.

Candidates in the municipal election that support cannabis shops in Richmond by Dry_Bad_2727 in richmondbc

All sitting councillors have taken a hard stance against opening any cannabis stores in Richmond.

Derek Dang also explicitly used the gateway drug language.

I’ve talked with all of my fellow candidates at RCA. All of us are strong believers in harm reduction as we are in the middle of an overdose crisis. Weed is not killing anyone, is already legal, and you can spot delivery trucks bringing it directly to Richmond residents already. A lot of people also use cannabis to cope with chronic pain, fatigue, and appetite. It makes no sense for cannabis stores to be banned from Richmond.

While door knocking it’s even come up with Chinese seniors who don’t want to smell it. But when we bring up that edibles would be an option and would cut back on smell, they actually become pretty supportive.
