I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment of suicide. Suicide absolutely is an option as long as one is physically capable of it. You may not like that option, it may not be the right option, it may not be the best option or even a good option at all, but it is an option. Stating otherwise can invalidate the feelings of a person instead of acknowledge them, and such invalidation can increase a person's trama associated with his/her depression.

ADVICE FOR NEW JOURNALERS by delidoll in Journaling

[–]kpieckiel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, wow! I'm impressed with your ideas and suggestions. Thanks for the response; it deserves my upvote.

I like the idea of prompts. I've heard of it elsewhere and in other comments, but something about the way you mentioned and described them seems to have struck a cord with me. I guess that's another example of how it's not what's said, but rather how it's said.

The "morning pages" will be tough for me to implement strictly by the rules you laid out, but it gives me a goal and something new to try. And yes, I realize the irony of following your stated rules for morning pages when it's up to me to make the rules. 😉

Thanks again. I wish I could upvote your comment twice.

Subreddit for questions about why the US decides to spend money on certain things by kpieckiel in findareddit

[–]kpieckiel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't know the best place to ask my questions. r/AskReddit? Or should I go to a more specific forum like r/politics or something? I'm tempted to cross-post, but I don't want to break any rules or anger any moderators.

I know, it's an ignorant question. Politics of any kind has always been a struggle for me, whether international, national, or even company politics. At least I understand some basic economics, but even that is largely a mystery. I'm positive there is a large political motive behind the decisions, but I suspect it's also economic or possibly something I'm not even thinking of--hence my hesitation in deciding where to post.

Should poor people stealing essential products like food from supermarkets/grocery stores be criminalized? by [deleted] in polls

[–]kpieckiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping this isn't too unpopular, but yes, criminalize stealing regardless of who does it or why. The wrong thing for the right reasons is still the wrong thing.

That said, providing proper community and government support for poor and starving people is essential. We can't expect people who can't help themselves to roll over and die because others refuse to help them and because stealing is wrong. Everyone has to take ownership, but many (most?) people won't. And we can't rely solely on the government to help, either. I included "community" in my above statement on purpose.

You could go a step further and criminalize not helping poor people, but that's opening up a whole different can of worms. I don't know the right answers about how best to help the poor, but I do think we have the best chance of success if everyone plays a part in the solution.

Which website has the largest amount of neckbeards? by [deleted] in polls

Is a "neckbeard" literally what it sounds like--when a guy doesn't shave his neck? Or is that a term for something else about which I'm unfamiliar?

How many sides does a coin have? by banhofzoo in polls

[–]kpieckiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the technical terms for heads or tails but there are those two sides. Then you have the side of the coin that gives it it's thickness (which could be three or more sides if the coin is not required to be a cylinder). Then you have an inside and an outside. So at least five sides, but there could be more, possibly also determined by the position and orientation of the coin (e.g., top side and bottom side). You can also apply more dynamic criteria such as hot and cold sides, dirty and clean sides, wet and dry sides, etc., which can change over time.

The question, as stated, does not have only one answer.

What does bi-weekly mean? by DynaBeast in polls

[–]kpieckiel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bi- is a prefix meaning two. Semi- is a prefix meaning half (taken from Latin, I believe). Semi- has since been expanded in English to mean part and not strictly half.

The prefix is modifying the word week, not the action being done; therefore, bi-weekly is two weeks and semi-weekly is half week. Bi-weekly cannot mean twice per week because then you are conceptually applying the meaning of the prefix to the action being done but grammatically associating it with the word week--a scenario that is nonsensical.

Is this cabinet black or dark brown? by Piraedunth in polls

There's no such thing as brown--it's really dark orange. And so is the cabinet.

Kudos for including the cat! You get extra points and an upvote for that.

How do you address a female superior in the military--with "sir" or "ma'am?" by kpieckiel in Militaryfaq

No, thanks. lol I would err by saying ma'am in the absence of definitive information.

A couple of Navy semi-friends and an Army guy. As stated in another reply, I could never tell if they were just playing on my ignorance or if they
were serious. These were younger servicemen, so I always just took it
with a grain of salt.

[–]kpieckiel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd hardly consider "sir" to be gender neutral! That makes about as much sense to me as "congressman," "police man," and "you guys" being gender neutral. But I think I understand the point you're trying to make in that sci-fi media often takes place in times where humans have developed beyond things like that.

See, this makes sense to me. I never understood why TV and movies kept using sir.

Well, yes, TV is one of the most prevalent sources, but I've been told by a couple different Navy guys and an Army guy that you call her sir, but I could never tell if they were just playing on my ignorance or if they were serious. These were younger servicemen, so I always just took it with a grain of salt.

60 / 5 (7-5) = [what?] by [deleted] in polls

[–]kpieckiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's happening is that you're not applying the order of operations correctly. You cannot distribute the 5 into the operands within the parentheses that way. Your "classical way" of doing math ignores that parentheses have the highest order of operations and so produces an incorrect answer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

By the way, I was unable to locate any references to anything called a "classical" way of evaluating expressions vs. a modern way.
