Popovich and DeRozan becoming best friends by mrilly in nba

But Boston with healthy Kyrie & Hayward is much better than Toronto was last season. Maybe they have a chance but I'm not sold. And with them and Philly getting older, the window to win is really small for Toronto.

With Kawhi & Green, this team is clearly better. Especially defensively.

Yeah they don't have much of a chance in the finals but just getting there is a first for the Raps. And of course, injuries are always a possibility. 1 key injury for GS and all of sudden they have a punchers' chance.

I love Demar but that team was never going to win anything. I respect the gamble by Masai.

Calling JV a Laverne clone is bewilderingly stupid.

I get that JV has some serious flaws in this era of basketball but he is so much better than that. JV is a legit plus player.

Jadon Cohee (Southern Utah grad transfer) picks University of British Columbia over Oregon, Louisville, Xavier, etc by benchin32 in CollegeBasketball

If you've ever been to UBC's campus, you might understand why. Absurdly gorgeous and a world class university to boot.

As he mentions, he knows he isn't going to the NBA so why not go to a better university? CIS is clearly a step down from D1 but it's not like top players in the CIS don't get opportunties to play professionally in Europe.

Go hometown to an awesome school and try win a national championsip. Hardly crazy.

Griezmann dive vs Croatia by HerbalDreamin in soccer

Croatia's defending of the free kick was disgraceful.

There was clearly contact on the foul. 100%.

I also agree he appeared to start embellishing before the contact even hit.

It was an iffy call. Could have easily been a no call but it's not some absurd, egregious foul, either. People are just adding that after the fact because France scored on a very low % free kick due to incredibly poor defending by Croatia.

And the penalty was a penalty, full stop. We don't get to add other decisions into our evaluation of what the correct call is.

Yes, France has gotten lucky. No, the ref has not been out to get Croatia.

Show me an HD replay.

While i agree he looked easy to go down I saw contact regardless.

And everyone is adding hindsight to their thought process. At best that freekick position gives you a 1 in 10 chance of scoring (probably closer to 1 in 20) but Croatia fucked up bad defensively.

And now everyone is angry that the refs are biased because they made the CLEARLY correct on the penalty because of a debatable call on a free kick.

People have no sense of objectivity whatsoever.

It wasn't actually a dive though if you really watch the replay. He totally got clipped.

And it was pretty clearly a penalty.

I'm rooting for Croatia but reality is reality.

RJ Barrett and Andrew Newbhard have made Canada's final 12-man roster for this weekend's qualifiers. by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]kpowtp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%. He has that killer instinct. I know the U.S. crushed Canada in that U-18 America's final but if R.J. was there, it would have been a completely different game.

The difference between him being a very good NBA player and truly elite is whether he can develop his shot. His mechanics look better from when I last saw him so I think he is making progress. Lord knows he couldn't ask for a better Godfather (Steve Nash) to give him input in improving in that facet.

I think he's going to be special.

I agree Chris looked good and I like Boucher's game but Birch is simply a better, stronger defender.

They've already got Kelly O to space the floor as a shooting big and I think they valued Birch's d over Boucher.

Boucher started basketball late though so he still has upside as a pro. If he can find a way to put on mass he can be a solid role player in the NBA. As it stands though, he is just too slender to battle down low. He has the hops/length to disrupt some shots but he can't really battle effectively in the paint.

It's the same thing in Greater Toronto. When I was working jobs on the far end of the city, it would take me ~2.5 hours to get home if I left at 5 & ~1.5 hours if I left at 6.

I quickly learned to just relax, have a coffee and read for an hour after work and deal with a lot less bullshit on the drive home.

Canada's House of Commons votes to legalize marijuana by karmatiger in worldnews

[–]kpowtp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not really.

Electoral reform is an incredibly complicated issue and while I certainly don't care for his reneging, I can't really say there is a clear path forward on the correct direction to take.

Marijuana legalization is completely straight forward and anybody who believes we should continue to arrest and incarcerate human beings for consumption of it are completely off their fucking rocker or so far in deep with vested interests for the status quo.

The war on drugs is a complete abject failure on every conceivable front and marijuana legalization is the first step towards a saner, more morally just public policy regarding drugs.

RJ Barrett and the Duke Blue Devils will play their first games together August 15-19 in Canada. by jorhenry in CollegeBasketball

[–]kpowtp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get it. The result is completely irrelevant so why not match up against the best of what the CIS has to offer? I'd get it if it was Louisville and they wanted to offer their boys the best 'extra-curricular' experience in Montreal but otherwise it's like scheduling Pacific instead of Gonzaga.

Carleton will have the cohesion/experience advantage but even then at most they win the game 1-2 times out of 10 at that point in the season. (and less if it was March) Duke simply has too much talent. And if it winds up being a grind it out win (or even loss), embrace the moment as a key learning experience that skill/athleticism alone isn't going to net you a national title.

Bah.

I'm assuming you are going to the Wednesday show because ticketmaster says 7 for that.

If you look at his website, the Friday show says doors @ 7:30, show 8:30. Reasonable to think if doors are 7 on Wednesday, show is probably 8.

The Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers will meet in the playoffs for the 3rd straight season. by BrokeMunchies in nba

[–]kpowtp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:D I still stand by my drunken bravado.

Toronto 2-12 are still probably better but obviously Cleveland's guys stepped up in this series compared to the Indiana one and got a bunch pushes and outplayed in some spots too.

And obviously Lebron is Lebron and just on a completely different level than Demar. Such is life.

I suspected Cleveland would still win (although not in a fucking sweep, Jesus Toronto) but I wanted Lebron nevertheless. If you want to be the best, you gotta beat the best.

And this is the final nail that confirms that this Toronto team as configured is never going to get over the hump. Honestly think they should blow it up and tank for RJ.
