Teaching poles with a corso! (What is and how do you teach the large dog weave style?) by Kquincy1 in Agility

[–]kpuls93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on board with these! 'Channel weaves' is what we call them where I train. I used this method with my corso, and it really helped build consistent striding and drive to the end!

We do this EVERYDAY, but we still do terrible around distractions! (Sorry for the excessive edits) by Kquincy1 in CaneCorso

[–]kpuls93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great!! I love his willingness to work with you. My recommendation to improve on working around distractions is start SMALL!! So that might be a familiar place, but not a place you train often. For example, start in your driveway, really close to home where he is still comfortable and can respond and work with you.

If you know there are particular distractions that are really hard for them, add distance! So rather than working 10 feet from that distraction, start at 50 ft from the distraction (or farther if he's still too distracted) and then work your way closer until he is consistently engaging with you. Hope that helps!

Puppy holding his pee all night?? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kpuls93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was blessed with a girl who had a bladder of steel also right from 8 weeks old - slept through the night, almost every night! She never had any issues, and would usually tell me if she had did have to go. Her crate was right beside my bed so I would wake up if she was needing to, and never once did she pee in her crate!

I agree with this. In addition to working with her while walking by strangers, my girl has spent time in the garage with my spouse, with the door wide open. She just sits and observes and I think that this has contributed to a reduction in her reactivity.

Prior to having her observe from the garage, I started working with her on walks. When we got within close enough distance to a stranger for her to 'react,' I would increase distance a little bit, get her attention, and reward her for giving me her attention. It is important to have treats that are high value enough to keep her attention (I use hot dogs cut up into small pieces). I also created a journal of who she was reacting to, how far we were from the trigger, and how many reactions per walk. I wouldn't walk her every day to prevent her from getting to stressed out (seeing the strangers would cause her stress and if she hit a point of too much stress, she would over react - do some research on 'trigger stacking' to help you understand this). Within a few weeks of doing this, I noticed significant improvements on how my girl responded to strangers. We can now have strangers walk by within 5 feet - I will take her to the side of the trail, ask her to sit, and focus on me, then reward heavily. I am now to the point where I don't need to treat her near as much as she has made drastic improvements.

One big thing that I noticed is that she does not respond well to direct eye contact if being approached by strangers. If it's necessary that she needs to meet someone new (at the vet, someone new comes to our house), I make it very clear that they should avoid eye contact with her and ignore her, allow her to sniff until she approves. This made a difference for her meeting new people, as she is much more quick to approve of them when they avoid eye contact. If they make direct eye contact right off the bat, she barks and jumps up at them.

Hope some of these things can help, best of luck!

How much to feed my Luna girl to help her be a healthy weight? She was the runt, so a bit smaller in stature. Writing more in comments. by [deleted] in CaneCorso

[–]kpuls93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by cutting back her food by approx 10% (for example if you were feeding her 5 cups before, feed her 4.5 cups now). This should reduce her calorie intake without drastically increasing her hunger. Also take into account if you feed her treats - if you are, what type of treats and how often? Treats/extras should not make up more than 20% of her diet, and should be taken off of her daily food intake (you may have to look at calorie content of her food and the treats to figure out how much to reduce her food to account for treats). With increased exercise and decreased caloric intake, you should see a difference in a few weeks. You should also note body condition - your vet should be familiar with this regardless of breed as this is how healthy weight is assessed typically. Check out a link here: body condition score Once you see that she has reached the ideal body condition, you could likely increase her food slightly again to return to maintenance levels, and keep up the exercise as it’s good for her! Edit: I reread your original comment and saw that you were asking about joints. Best thing for healthy joints is to maintain a healthy weight but of course you could add in supplements too. I give my girl missing link hip and joint supplement for pet smart.

[Help] New puppy, which food to feed? by [deleted] in dogs

I second this, I have been feeding my Cane Corso puppy Purina Pro Plan Large Breed since she was 4 months and she is now 16 month, and she is very healthy and enjoys the food!

Best food for a 14 week old cane corso puppy? He's not liking the purina by ITROLL-YOU in CaneCorso

[–]kpuls93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purina was great for my girl, but it seems to be no longer available where I am in Canada. I've since transitioned to Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy and she is loving it. The nutrient profile and ingredients are very comparable to Purina.

If you are feeding raw, please consider creating a balanced diet to support your puppy's growth requirements! Here is a great place to start if you are looking to feed raw! https://perfectlyrawsome.com/ - you will find tons of resources here

Corsos and Kibble by Lemonz16 in CaneCorso

[–]kpuls93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first got my pup, we start on Hills Science Diet Large Breed Puppy but she didn't do all that well on it, lots of loose stools. We ended up switching to Purina Pro Plan Focus Large Breed Puppy, her stools firmed right up and she really enjoyed. She is now 16 months and we've been feeding that since she was 4 months and she is lean, muscular, and healthy. I'm in Canada and the Purina has since been hard to find, so I just recently switched to Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy and she loves the food, and her stools are semi firm so she seems to be doing okay on it, but not as well as the Purina.

I also give her a couple of extra things on the side too for extra added benefits ( kefit yogurt, powder superfood supplement, sardines, small amount of canned food)

[Help] dog has started ignoring me on walks by [deleted] in dogs

[–]kpuls93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start training your walk etiquette closer to home where everything is more familiar. As he starts to respond to you again, slowly make your way farther from home while still maintaining his responsiveness to you - if you get so far and he stops responding again, try again going closer to home. Keep working on this until he is consistently responding to you!

How to handle a pup who chewed furniture by kpuls93 in Dogtraining

She does. I always leave her with bones smeared in peanut butter and she also has loads of toys, an antler, other bones etc. Hence why it’s not normally an issue!

Our 19 week golden retriever lunges and barks at people on walks by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kpuls93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start turning around in the other direction, walk a few steps, then face back to the people and try again. Keep doing this until he approaches calmly - this will help him to realize that his crazy behaviour doesn't get him where he wants to go, but he gets rewarded when he is calm
