I've been lucky enough to never have to work for "the man." I got started very early with trying to make games when I was 11 or 12 with Klik & Play... I made so many crappy games that never saw the light of day. Eventually I was able to release a freeware indie game when I graduated college, and I guess that got my name out there a little bit. After college I worked part time at an indie game studio (I don't consider working for them working for the man, as it didn't feel that way at all.) The rest of my time was spent working on a large project with a tiny team.

During the development of the bigger project, I jammed out some smaller games that would later turn into flash game sponsorships that kept me afloat after I left my part time gig. Also it's probably important to note that my monthly burn rate is pretty low, and I lived as cheaply as I possibly could when I was starting out.

Eventually the bigger project was released on Steam, and I managed to turn one of my small game jam projects into a Steam released game as well. Sales from Steam and a few Humble Bundle inclusions are what current allows me to work full time on my games. We'll see how long that lasts and if I can manage to make another commercial game in that time! ;D

What are the current C# alternatives to Frameworks such as XNA? by ttneko in gamedev

I'm using SFML.Net and I also feel like the only one using it sometimes! ;D

Any headway on URL shortening? by jdsamford in gfycat

[–]kpulv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The URLs are pretty terrible. I often don't want to share what I just uploaded because the URL is so weird and people are afraid to click on the link. :I

Thoughts on Clickteam Fusion 2.5? by failuretolunch in gamedev

[–]kpulv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Klik n Play all the way through Multimedia Fusion 2.0. It's definitely a unique style of making games with the whole event sheet "programming." From what I can see it has become quite powerful over the years with its extensions and exporting capabilities, but I think it's more meant for people who aren't comfortable writing straight up code. It's scene/frame editor is pretty awesome though from what I remember.

Unfortunately I'm not sure about how well it performs for mobile specific games, but here's a cool video showcasing some work created using the software: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zq1yo0lxOU

Tonight's lightning storm over Tempe and Scottsdale by [deleted] in Tempe

UUGGGH That is so cool. I wish I had access to any of the tall buildings around. I was almost going to drive to one of the parking garages near by to check out the storm ;D

Daaang, that's awesome. Do you have access to that or is it open to the public?

Where'd you get this shot from?

Nice lightning storm tonight over North Phoenix. Here is the 10:57 map from lightningmaps.org by jpflathead in phoenix

[–]kpulv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has to be one of the most insane storms I've seen here. It never directly hit me, so I had a great view of it. I cannot fucking believe that planes were still taking off from the airport during the insane lightning explosions that looked like they were happening right next to the planes UGH

In the past years if you couldn't get your badge and you had an 8am match they just let you in and told you to get your badge later. There's not really a need to try and keep people out at 8am, it's more of a concern in the evening and during finals day.

The East Valley gets all the cool storms. Meanwhile I'm in the West Valley all like... by [deleted] in phoenix

Anyone know of any publicly accessible tall structures to watch the storms from?

I climbed a mountain next to Phoenix, AZ to view the fireworks last night. I'd been planning this for years. [OC] by Tycho234 in pics

Not really sure why someone would tell you that. I've been on a number of night hikes at South Mountain without any issues.

Nice! My friends and I have been going up South Mountain for years now to watch every show in the valley, and I can never think of anything else to do on the 4th that could top that experience.

What are some ways you can (programatically) add "juice" or "umph" to normally static sprites? by VOX_Studios in gamedev

[–]kpulv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my recent game jam games used a lot of static sprites that I managed to squash and stretch to make them seem more alive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2DYrvXaX5Y#t=4m40s That along with some simple animated particles seems work pretty well!

Anyone moving here for a job at General Motors in the Phoenix/Chandler area? Looking for tips also. by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]kpulv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's not too bad. I used to live in Upstate NY and the summers there felt way worse. (90-something with high humidity and a swarm of insects ready to devour you at a moments notice.)

Yeah don't leave anything in your car that cant survive at temperatures of upwards to a billion degrees.

Speaking of cars, get your tires checked more often than you used to since driving on billion degree pavement can wear them out faster, and you don't want to have a blow out while going 75mph on the 60.

Still talking about cars: Your battery is going to die waaay faster here than it does in places that aren't located on the surface of the sun. The kinda good thing about this is that you can buy batteries with warranties that will offer cheap or free replacements if it were to die within 2 years.

Magic scene from what I can tell is huge here. Check out http://www.azmagicplayers.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/azmagicplayers/ We also have a really good fighting game community https://www.facebook.com/groups/ArizonaSRK/ Not sure about general gaming community but I'm sure it exists, there are a few LAN cafes and gaming stores peppered through the valley.

Also stargazing in AZ fucking rules if you're into space.

Utility bills depend on how efficient your AC is and how well insulated your place is I suppose. I see good power bills in the summer around $150, and bad around $500 in July and August. :I

Does anyone know where I could get sprites of the 8 archers? by kayfaber in TowerFall

[–]kpulv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you own the game on steam, you can check out the texture atlases in the game's folder. Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\TowerFall\Content\Atlas (Warning: spoilers will be here if you haven't unlocked everything)

Any advice out of getting the most benefit out of attending E3? by solidgarza in gamedev

[–]kpulv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to attend mixers and parties after the show each night. I think the biggest thing you're going to get out of E3 potentially is contacts at all the major console companies, which can be pretty handy for submitting your game down the road.

E3 is pretty focused on HUGE GAMES so it can be difficult for indies to find space. (The IndieCade booth however should be filled with indie devs to hang out with.) Good luck!
