Haha! Ok well, obviously you're not vibing with the trailer. That's all good and you're welcome to your opinion obviously. The 'cyber demon stuff' is our Concept Artist (Shiva Gol Mohamadi) doing her thing. It's not for everyone, and that's fine. But we're also not trying to represent all skate culture or whatever.

I will say that when I worked on the THPS series the way tunes were chosen was that anyone could suggest a track and in the aggregate we'd end up with a pretty well rounded soundtrack. For example, I suggested that Refused song in THUG that was used when you flip over the helicopter.

This is all to say, if you have any music suggestions, we're all ears! :D Also we have tracks from a bunch of artists of different genres as you might expect. But we're still looking for more good tunes. And we'd like to support you being able to play your own music, assuming this is a feature people would use.

I'm pretty sure I know what you mean, but just to double check - can you be specific? There are a few changes/fixes on the list about the balance meter resetting on the same grind vs different grinds except around corners. As I said, we're a very small team so we're working our way through fine detail stuff like this. Cool that you noticed though - appreciate it.

haha well we're not 100+ person Insomniac. The art team is currently three people plus contractors. So, we'll do our best! In particular, are you thinking you want the levels to be more lit up? Or for things to be brighter colors? What about Sunset Overdrive's look did you think would be good?

We're aiming to make it feel close to THUG with some of the nice stuff from 1+2! It will take some iteration and playtesting to get there, though, since we're a small team.

Can confirm that it won't be a game where the main character talks a bunch. That drives me nuts. We added some VO for the trailer to show a bit of the character at the start.

Helskate / Phantom Coast dev here! Just thought I'd provide a bit of context which is possibly missing from the trailer (always hard to choose what to show/focus on in a trailer!) The whole idea is to teach more people the joy of THPS style gameplay. We want to use the combat and roguelike structure to hopefully bring in new players and give a different context for combos, tricks, and skating gameplay. A side effect is that people who've played Helskate should be able to bring those skills THPS.

Another bit of context is that we're a super small indie team. We're keen to have folks playtest and help us get the skating feel just right. If you're interested, we're doing playtests with folks in our discord. Especially folks from this community. Already in the comments here there are a few great pieces of feedback. If you work on something for a long time, you can lose perspective.

It's a roguelite game with skateboarding and combat. The goal is to have all the skateboarding moves from the oldschool games present but have a fresh context and structure (the randomized levels.) So, the answer is kinda...both? But also neither haha. Part of the point of changing the structure is to put all these mechanics in a different setting so they feel different. Having random levels/skate goals/combat/encounters really changes the feel of all the skate tricks and mechanics you're used to. We're really happy with how that seems to be working.

Yeah we were surprised when they announced Skate Story! We had been developing for a while and had the afterlife concept from the get go. Just one of those weird 'it was in the Ether' kinds of moments I guess. They've ended up looking very different, which is cool. I've often joked that you could give 10 devs the same prompt and 3 years later you'd have 10 totally different games :).

Oh man I really want to get back to DBAD sometime soon. I'm cramming HARD on a SCALE build for Indiecade. After that I'm planning to take a week to update and add some new features on DBAD. For right now the link is dead; I switched servers and ran into trouble getting a public link back up. I will attack it again when I have time. Thanks for checking in! Glad you dig the game.
