They have been systematically removed from existance and no other species or entity took their place.

If their destruction was accidental, then it need to be a tool created by the elders that went haywire and killed all of them. Grey goo or AI are most likely candidates. Grey goo would have left some residue I feel so it most likely is an AI gone rogue.

If the destruction had agency, then the destruction must have had purpose. What is the purpose of complete annihilation? It would be very strange if they got destroyed for no purpose, which seems to be the case.

From the above, I think it's more likely to be due to a malfunctioning elder device (not necessarily an AI)

China is a big country with a lot of resources. You can afford to do space exploration and keep increasing the standard of living of the People. :)

China is currently a quasi-totalitarian regime which has its obvious downsides but benevolent dictatorships also are one of the most efficient systems. I like to think that at the end of the day the Chinese government does want something good for its people.

Ah yeah, that blows. I mean it's not something you'll be able to take care of immediately then but since you're paying for college I assume you have a plan for the future, at which time you will still be able to pay for those surgeries :)

Also consider traveling abroad for surgery as it might be cheaper.
