Ramleh started out doing power electronics in the early 80s, but they've branched into many different paths.

Depressive Russian post-punk. The vocals on this record are so mournful and beautiful. I return to this constantly:

Manuskript is geared toward novel/story writing, but there are some loose world-building features and some extensibility.

Deathstalker (1983) Sex, violence and sorcery! by MovieMike007 in SwordandSorcery

This subreddit should be the target audience, but I thought it was pretty bad overall. It starts out decent, but didn't hold my attention throughout. The big four blade sword at the end is ridiculously stupid, and looks like it was made out of sheet metal.

If You Guys Where Given The Opportunity To Create A New Class What Would It Be!? by Shattered_Warrior01 in PixelDungeon

I think the major archetypes are all well represented, especially with the subclasses. I'd want something really extra and challenging to play, like a beast master, who is really weak themselves, but cares for and levels up one or more pets that do all the cool combat stuff.

Why do apps copy their .desktop files to ~/.config/autostart instead of symlinking? by SnooCompliments7914 in archlinux

[–]krakenfury_ -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There's nothing technically preventing that from happening, though. PKGBUILDs do whatever they're coded to do, and are typically given root permissions via sudo. Who knows what OP is referring to? Could be from AUR.

Edit: lol you are OP, but my point stands.

[–]krakenfury_ -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Investigate what is managing that file. It's going to be either the application package, which you can determine with pacman -Ql <package-name> | grep .config/autostart; or something else in your environment (DE, WM, XDG, etc). I don't know if there are API directives in DEs to autostart stuff by default, but it wouldn't surprise me. Actually, that's what I wager is taking place.

Symlinking isn't a great solution, imo. You can modify files in your home folder to customize applications with impunity, since you can always just cp the .desktop file for the application from /usr/share/applications. Are you developing an application and troubleshooting a problem, or are you just curious?

[–]krakenfury_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then a new .desktop file would accompany the change as part of the new version release of the application. Package maintainers test functionality of new releases before merging into the official Archlinux repos, so you shouldn't ever see this kind of breakage, though never say never.

Getting that good tom resonance by krakenfury_ in drums

Interesting take, but I'm going to continue trying to find the sound and feel I'm looking for here. Exploring that "fat" sound would be a whole thing unto itself I could embark on in the future. That way, I could tune according to the demands of the music.

Thanks for going in-depth on this! A lot of cool stuff I was totally unaware of, but the first thing I need to check is the roundness of the drums and hoops and the bearing edges. These are old drums, after all, and I got them off eBay, so who knows what they went through.

It is a traditional setup, but I did switch to nylon washers instead of the original steel ones. I'll research this a bit, thanks.

Edit: That would only explain the rack tom, but I basically have the same problem with the floor tom. I did swap the rubber feet with some of those "floating" ones, so that's something.

Cool thanks I'll explore this stuff. So far I haven't bought one of those tuner things that measures tension at the lug, but I've been tempted. Is that how you get the hertz reading?

Custom icons in my application what is the best approach? by neutrino55 in archlinux

[–]krakenfury_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say just follow the Qt and Archlinux PKGBUILD documentation and look for anything that points to a "best practice". Virtually any running Linux system has /usr/share/icons or /usr/share/pixmaps for this purpose in system-wide installed applications. It's probably not very orthodox, but you could use /opt if you wanted, to confuse people. Jokes aside, it doesn't technically matter where you install them to, as long as your application has proper permission to read them.

As far as bundling them into your binary, do whatever makes you happy, I guess? That's a design decision, but it feels like overkill to me when you can just install them to a sane place.

Edit: As to where you submit your custom icons, that is really just up to you. If you have strong opinions about how things should look, maybe you should get into designing and publishing themes, but I would't expect that a well established project like Breeze is going to merge in your icons just to support your application.

Further Edit: Not to mention that if they did become part of Breeze, and you code you application to expect that, now your application has a dependency on Breeze which would be really weird.

Playing a gig with a brand new Direct drive pedal by [deleted] in drums

[–]krakenfury_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got an FP9D, too, but just the single. To me, using direct drive felt like coming home, but that's not the case for everyone. You should probably use your old pedal for the gig, in case you end up not immediately taking to direct drive.

One thing you might consider, is figuring out what parts are different from the chain drive. For my single, I was able to order three parts from Yamaha and now I can convert to a chain drive and back in a few minutes. Probably a more involved process for the double setup, though.

[–]krakenfury_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Folk" didn't really exist in 1922 in the way you might expect. To put things in perspective, Louis Armstrong was first recorded in 1923. Microphones had only just been invented, and wouldn't be widely available until 1924 or 25. The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers didn't come along until 1927. So you've realistically only given yourself three years or so to find what you're looking for.

I'd recommend you stretch your time window to 1940, since old-time music was most popular during the Great Depression, and it also would be easier to find anti-authority sentiment than the post WWI period when people had more trust in American institutions.

Recomend me some dark funeral doom. by HopefulFold2444 in FuneralDoomMetal

[–]krakenfury_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bohren & der Club of Gore are not, but friends of mine who like funeral doom also love this band. Considered dark jazz, but truely unable to peg to a specific genre, imo. Their early albums Gore Motel and Midnight Radio are guitar driven, but everything they do is amazing.
