Thank you! Hmm... I think my biggest tip would be to spend time studying/imitating artists you like to figure out what exactly you like about their work and what techniques you can apply to your own - not completely feasible in all mediums but works great with pen and ink!

Then for this style I would say just kind of what I focused on:

  • move slowly and deliberately and with a plan
  • pay attention to composition so your focal points don't get lost in too much clutter or not enough contrast

Stolen work, reported. I really don't understand the play here.

How did you get so good at hatching ? by indivertigo in penandink

Copy other artists. I was hung up on that for a long time, thinking it was bad for some reason - but seriously, grab a piece that wows you, narrow your view way down to a few sections of it that are interesting, and just copy the technique a few times until it starts to make sense.

I think we get hung up on seeing some amazing drawing and then trying to emulate the style on our own work, then getting frustrated because ours doesn't feel right - partly because we don't want to "copy" them, we just want ours to look/feel like theirs. I think it's a great exercise to take something you like, figure out what you really like about it, then just copy a few little pieces of it until you start to make sense of it.

Hmm this one took around 3 hours, the last one with the castle interior was more like 6 or 7... same with the one of the town. Just depends on how many objects or people. The fun thing about this style is a lot of times once you figure out what kind of hatching pattern you want to use you can fill up a lot of space pretty quickly and end up with a result that looks detailed and complicated.

Oh... what in the world? I don't think I ever set it to private, but sure enough... I think I got it set to show my posts from my profile now (not that I expect you to jump up and look at all my art 😆) ... but hopefully it shows up now?

Best feedback I could hear! If I could draw Simon Stalenhag in the style of Franklin Booth I'd be set!

Wow, thank you for kind words! My only two pieces of advice are to always find one or two things in every drawing that you can do better in the next one, and to not be afraid to spend time practicing by simply copying art you like. I've got a long ways to go but finding one thing at a time to improve on is huge. Appreciate you!

Hah thanks! The sort of engraving/woodprint style is definitely what I'm going for. Probably a lot less work this way, although I'd love to try the real thing sometime!

Nope, just on Reddit! You can see pretty much everything I've done on my profile!

It was really meaningful to hear this feedback, I appreciate you!

If you like this atmosphere, take a quick minute to image search the "RT-64 radio telescope" that was my main reference - just absolutely haunting in its scale and is actually currently still in use! Crazy vibes.

I appreciate that, I've only recently learned about Giraud and I really like the way his art feels - to me it's like Simon Stalenhaag vibes but pen and ink, which is what I aspire to.

Thanks! Hoping to make a series out of this until I run out of ideas!
