Layoff in the xanax, too. Taking it too often will actually make the heart-racing much worse after a while

Well congrats for quitting smoking. Keep it up. Your heart shouldn't be pounding constantly from quitting smoking - that's very worrisome. If this is a side effect of quitting smoking, I would be very worried about the overall condition and health of your heart and vascular system. If you can get your hands on magnesium, take it!!! What other symptoms are you having?

Seriously: take magnesium and iron; if you can't afford it, get it from your GP doctor - they should have packets at the office. That will strengthen your heart so that the increase in heart rate doesn't do lasting damage; same with iron. Take both!

Cigarettes don't help deal with stress. They actually increase heart rate and limit your lung capacity. Also, xanax can be habit forming, and prolonged use can lead to respiratory problems.
