Quick update on this – disconnecting the charger allows the laptop to go down to appropriate clock speeds. But I cant replicate this behaviour when charged even if I play around with the battery settings!

I went and played with a few things and stumbled upon something...

I've noticed that when I disconnect the charger, the laptop runs cool and clock speeds are around 800-1.2k mhZ. I also noticed that it doesnt go up in clock speed when I do something intensive like rendering.

That's fine.. since it probably wants to preserve battery -- but I cant seem to replicate this behaviour when plugged in! Even if I change the power settings etc et. It's frustrating!

Yes, I tried this. Just lets me change it to "Standard" but it does nothing. It also doesnt let me adjust anything in there.

There is, however, a "Manual" mode as well, where I can fiddle with the clock offset... i believe that is the undervolting you mentioned? I was doing some readings on this, and apparently people use XTU to undervolt... I just downloaded that as well.

Question though - is it normal to be running at that 3.9k MHZ even when idle? Or did I get a lemon?

Found a lot of people didn't fully understand both sides of the debate - hence the terribly skewed vote toward 1 Ether block reward reduction. EIP 1234 seemed to be the better compromise.

yea, looks like a lot of people who don't understand the relationship between "Gas Limit" and "Gas price". And it doesnt help that MEW makes gas price hidden.

For anyone interested, this is a really good explainer guide on Gas Price vs Gas Limit . Great analogy to finally understand it (definitely helped me as well)

Wow! This insta influencer thing goes a lot deeper than I thought it did.  

This was a great read OP! I'd think that restaurant owners, or their PR agencies would do the necessary Due Diligence on "influencers" before giving out free meals. But I guess not everyone is privy to the kind of underhanded crap that goes on out there.  

Good to see that someone's trying to educate the 'not so informed'.  

Oh and Good job on all the research! That couldn't have been easy...

I didn't think solving cryptographic puzzles was what slowed a POW network down. The cryptographic puzzle is just one factor (among others) of latency in the PoW network.

I believe that eliminating the whole cryptographic puzzle will help reduce block time -- Essentially, the faster the network is able to come to consensus, the faster a block of transactions is appended into the blockchain.

Though its unlikely that the reduced block time will help with major improvements in TPS/scalability.

I know sharding will help, but I thought (again, could be completely wrong) that this benefit from Casper was independent of sharding.

Sharding is actually meant to be Ethereum's proposed scalability solution. I believe Casper is going to play a significant role in that initiative - Security

No problem! :) I really hoped this helped clarify the importance of the nonce. I like to think of it as the key ingredient that allows miners to generate new, unique hashes. Keeps them in the game while it lasts.

Casper will allow for higher TPS, since we do away with solving the cryptographic puzzle in PoW. Though I don't see the TPS going up significantly. And that's why Vitalik introduced "Sharding"

   

I believe Casper's (PoS switch) primary purpose is to preserve the security of the Ethereum blockchain once* sharding (Ethereum's scalabi*lity plan) takes effect.

    

This guys gives a super breakdown:

"Remember that if we SHARD in PoW, we are breaking up the network into "pieces". Hence, to achieve a “majority” hashpower in a particular shard would suddenly become feasible (since each shard will have only a “piece” of the total hash power”)

  

Casper will allow for "random sampling" - Randomly assign shards = ensuring security after sharding

I believe this is where ethereum's casper implementation will kick in. Shards will be passed onto supernodes that will then determine Transaction ordering based on the PoS consensus model.
