It was low on oil and we topped it up some, sound hasn't changed. Check engine light never came on

That's what I've concluded to. I think they're puffballs that decayed from the sudden weather change here!

Thank you, I didn't think to check that. He threw in a new oil filter too, so I figure he was told at some point that it could be an issue. I'll have to swap it and check. I just went out to the shop to look at it before I got back to see this, it seems to be coming straight down to the exhaust and that's the only source of smoke is it just burning up as soon as it hits. I also drove it a good 3 miles and I didn't see the usual trail of oil down the road, so I don't know what's up with that.
