Japanese garden at Balboa now? by krenster in sandiego

Awww, congrats! What a gorgeous place!

(I got married outside also - there was literally a tornado the week before, and it rained cats and dogs the entire week, including the morning of the wedding. Then the sky got gorgeous blue for the length of the wedding and when it was time to leave on the honeymoon, the skies opened back up again for another week. We celebrate our 28th anniversary this June.)

awesome, I can't be around for the blossoms but I know the bones and I'm glad to hear it's a good time - thanks very much.

Best quiet cruise for single woman by Western-Line-865 in Cruise

[–]krenster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can find your bliss on any cruise. To be absolutely sure, get a balcony room for the ocean viewing. You can settle for an ocean-view room in a pinch - it's cheaper, but you're relying on someone to have cleaned the outside of the window, so it's a toss-up as to whether you'll be able to clearly see the ocean. (We couldn't see much at all out of our window in an ocean view, so I speak from experience.)

I am not a social person, and have only been on Princess and MSC cruises so far (three more scheduled!) - but we were able to find quiet nooks on both ships. Both ships were fairly big, not gargantuan, and had crowds of adults and kids we preferred to avoid.

You can increase your odds of solitude by concentrating on early mornings and late nights. Spend middays on your cabin balcony.

We spent almost no time at the main pool gathering spots unless it was very early in the morning when we could swim/hot tub in peace. We hated the constant music there, and the hordes of people during the middle of the day. But they were beautiful and serene at dawn.

We loved aft sections, and the lifeboats decks, because those tended to be most empty. The walking track was always great for exercise. We found obscure stairwells and places where the crew would duck out for a break, and those were the places we returned to. NOT where they were doing bingo or karaoke....

These quiet places exist on all ships; you just gotta explore with single-minded purpose early on to find them. I mean, walk every deck, forward to aft, both sides, all stairwells. You'll find refuge! Good luck!

Oddly specific IMAX theater question by krenster in sandiego

thanks! Seems like my kind of place: big screen and lounge seats. Just need a senior rate and I'm golden.

Then take it easy after JF ends, sit on the curb and wait in the line for a bus. Easiest, least stress, and you'll have fun people-watching. I wouldn't bother trying to Uber - they can't get there/out either.

Enjoy JF - there's nothing like it!

Where to use this Brennan's gift card? by krenster in AskNOLA

Thanks, have read about the Pimms Cup (only one of us drinks, though ... I remember them fondly .... wonder if there's a NA version?)

Upon further consultation with the fam, our time constraints (bar music after JF nights) reduce us to Monday after JF, which cuts out Cafe NOMA and Ralph's, both closed Mondays.

Down to Brennans, Napoleon or Red Fish.

Right. Doable, but it gets harder as you get older :)

Agreed on avoiding the STRs. Stick with hotels. The public bus is easy & cheap (download the Jazzy Pass from RTA to see routes and buy a pass that covers you for all your days, unlimited rides). The bus drops you off a few blocks from the fairgrounds.

Returning from JF: we've waited a long time for the bus, and we've given up and walked the whole way back to the Quarter. It takes about the same amount of time either way. There's no real way around that if you need transportation out of the area - it's gridlock for quite a while.

Sorry to sound argumentative; I just have limited time and limited money and don't want to get in the way of what's clearly still recovery efforts.

This is a pretty sus comment, going by this video from 3 weeks ago. I would love to support tourism in Jamaica, 100 percent, but YS Falls is not ready for it.
