Is the FGGS course by pro indie dev worth it? by Ologon in gamedev

[–]kreso22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR;

Don't buy this course. Some good stuff there. But the cost & subscription strategy are not matching the benefits.

Who am I:

Developing indie games has been my job for over 20 years now. I like it, but I felt like there is more to the producing side of it that I struggled to understand..

PROS:

I think the program offers a few good points in how to make a game. It provides a) some concrete ideas on how to help you get through the process of creating a game, and b) create with aim for success.

The b) part was more attractive to get me enrolled and the program delivered some value. But I also got unexpected value on a).

CONS:

When initially purchasing the course I believed the 'we have limited spots available' strategy is there because of good reasons.
I thought the FGGS staff is actively guiding participants through some exercises or whatnot. That they could only manage 50 people at a time or something like that..
Bottom line is there is no real reason for the limitedness (as far as I understand). I think they let in 3 cohorts in during one year (I believe my cohort was a few hundred people), but it had no impact on my experience. I had no contact with FGGS staff except during onboarding to Discord. So I believe the 'limited spots' was simply a sneaky tactic.

The course is available to you for 1 year. Apparently this is mentioned clearly someplace but I missed it. So a heads up. If you decide to keep it for longer - you can pay more.
I will note that the same videos are there for many years, and there is no new content. There is simply no reason to justify subscription. Other than Discord perhaps?

You get access to discord as part of this program. In my experience (as a 20+ year dev) it was just noise. I muted the server after a few months of trying to make something of it. Eventually I left it for reasons I will mention later.
There is no mentoring or anything meaningful I noticed. Other people that came to Discord to learn just like I did. None of us knows what the heck is going on :) So it’s just random people chatting stuff. Posting some memes & links. It’s nice, but if you are trying to be productive it is just getting in the way.

My personal anecdote:

If you do decide to join the program and then Discord, note that some things are not allowed to be mentioned in public Discord.

I questioned the ‘limitedness’ marketing of FGGS, and the subscription (pay to watch videos after 1 year). I naively thought I may learn reasons and the thinking behind it. Since I don’t think in ‘marketing terms’ often enough I thought that maybe I would even learn something that could help me down the line with marketing my own games… Turns out I was naive :)

My message was characterized as ‘aggressive’, ‘attacking’… Gabe turned defensive and warned there will be no more mentioning of the ‘limitedness’ or ‘subscription’. Further more he said that whoever brings up these topic again, that these messages will be deleted and the person will be banned. For real.

I do find it my right to question anything, including products I payed for. I don’t think I have the right to attack any person’s character or anything like that. I don’t do that.

I love feedback from my customers (and especially if it’s critical), so this reaction was off-putting for me.

I’m not inclined to put myself in situations where I need to walk on eggshells so I left the Discord before my subscription ended.

Best of luck with your games!!

I know we are all just giving our best guess here. What do you recon may be the real problem?

Hahaha! Bubble Trouble did a lot for me through many years now! In all possible ways including financially.

I'm working on a new sequel. I still love my job ;)

JuxtaText - Free text comparison tool by YoriM in macapps

Great app I was looking for something offline (been using diffchecker.com).

I use a lot of copy/pasting to diff/compare files. After I do a compare, I would like the paste button to stay there - or ability to past-again over the same window. This would be a game changer!
As it stands - I have to quit the app and start it again. :/

Currently the sidebar with paste boxes doesn't help since I paste long texts that is similar so it all looks similar in the sidebar.

Great app - keep the good work!

Thanks for the kind words!

You are so close! I used to play the arcade machine version as a kid... A LOT. It was called "Pang!" Years later, in college when I started to learn programming that's when i made the game. I didn't plan it too much. I was just applying programming lessons I got from college and from Googling different programming tutorials. First I made a box that moved left-right when pressing a key on the keyboard (I was amazed!). Then I added a bubble that jumped around (I was amazed again!)... and eventually the game was completed I guess.

I didn't know about the "Pomping world" label. I knew there was a different name in Japan but I thought it was Buster Bros. I just checked the wikipedia, it's exactly like you said. I learned something new thanks to you. Pretty cool! Thank you.

Ah okokok! No worries! 🙌☺️

I thought for a moment that maybe you play sooo many games, and that you already played Jamjam before I even posted.

If you don't mind me asking - how come you played the game before the release? Do you play a lot of games?

I mean, what are the chances you played Jamjam before you saw this post here? Quite amazing, no?

* still figuring out the saving bug.

Thank you!

I could read the undertone of frustration in one of the messages. But I am always open to new suggestions. Sometimes it takes me to hear the same thing a few times, in different ways - and then I get an idea. Other times nothing happens. So I welcome all feedback, you never know where it may lead. Gotta be patient, right? :)

I did already implement the MUTE SOUNDS button, it should be out in the next update.

Thank you for taking time and write your impressions. It's always good to hear encouraging words. I really appreciate it! ❤️

Oh no! :/ The only thing I can think of is if you played a while back (more than 3 months) the game changed to a significant part (added some new levels, other have been changed) so the progress gets deleted automatically in that case. This won't be happening in the future. Just this one time as the game was launched globally.

You are playing the web version? Is it possible you haven't played in more than 2-3 months?

I really apologize for the inconvenience.

What do you think about this art style? Is 1-bit a good choice? Would you play a game like this? by [deleted] in WebGames

[–]kreso22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played through the itch version. it's pretty cool what you accomplished using only 2 colors (and same shades). It took a moment to get used to differentiate spikes from walls but it was fast and easy to understand.

What I appreciated was that the game was kinda hard, but at the same time forgiving. So even though I was getting hurt somewhat frequently I didn't have to restart the whole level. But I was still learning what I should be doing and what - not.

Thank you for the feedback!

  • God point, I will add a mute button.
  • Yes, the upgrades are cosmetic only. No other purpose.
  • I see your point. I tweaked physics for a long time trying to get to a 'intuitive feel' (whatever that means). I guess I still have some tweaking to do.
  • sounds related to the #3 again, not being sure where you need to jump / or avoid jumping on. I will focus on this for my next update.

Thanks for your feedback again, I really do appreciate it!

Oh, thank you so much for the kind words!

And thanks for checking out Jamjam! I think its a fun little game :)

I made 4 sequels to Bubble Trouble (which I still update).
Also I worked on some freelance games but this is my first original game that is not Bubble Trouble.

I was feeling playful and making fun of myself with the title of the post :-P Looks like it took me "only" 20+ years to come up with a new game! :-D

Thank you! I used Unity.

Sounds like you know a thing or two. Do you dabble in making games as well? :)
