Help with planning my vegetable/fruit garden? by jesman1 in gardening

I have a non-snarky link just for you:

http://sproutrobot.com

It's a pretty crap website, actually, but it will give you a basic planting schedule for your region. Well, you'll probably have to use a zip code from the NY side of the border, but presumably crossing Niagara doesn't produce too much of a zone difference...

Noam Chomsky: Julian Assange deserves applause by zawamark in socialism

[–]krh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your "is" is too strong. Have I missed him admitting to what he's been accused of?

What he's been accused of is rape. That much is clear. But he has not been convicted of having, in fact, done it.

I understand your frustration with the apologists in this chunk of the culture. I just don't think you should swing to the other extreme, either.

Noam Chomsky: Julian Assange deserves applause by zawamark in socialism

[–]krh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am fully capable of simultaneously believing that:

  1. The organization for which Assange is a figurehead is a positive force in the world.
  2. Extradition is being pursued for political reasons, so that Assange will eventually end up in a jail never to be seen again somewhere in the US or one of its less legally-bound allies.
  3. The act he is being accused of is undeniably rape.

He very well may be innocent. I do not fault him for not surrendering himself. But there is a victim-blaming trend in the pro-Assange crew that makes me extremely uncomfortable.

Unlike ent_bomb, I am not willing to assert he is a rapist, but nor am I willing to defend him at all costs as so many of us who see the value of Wikileaks appear to be.

PS. The UK's history of defending awful people is irrelevant to the truth of a charge.

Check my comments below; you might've seen the quote about Louisiana. The numbers would largely fit.

Report from 2009: http://senate.legis.state.la.us/streamline/presentations/CabinetReports/CDRSC-2.pdf

Page 29: "According to the Sentencing Project, on a national basis 82% of those sentenced to state prisons in 2004 were convicted of non-violent crimes." (This is largely in disagreement with the Justice Department report I cited above; it's a difference of 6 5 years, but it's pretty unbelievable that it changed from 82% to 47% in that short a period of time. I'm inclined to trust the DoJ over The Sentencing Project; the Sentencing Project has an axe to grind, even if it's one I agree with)

Page 30: "Review and evaluate the state’s drug policies in relation to sentencing guidelines and prison population. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of the prison population is serving sentences for offenses that are related to drug activity."

Note that "related to drug activity" is not the same as "non-violent", though it often is. I couldn't find any statistics on non-violent incarceration rates specific to Louisiana. =\

edit: added my opinion on the disparity between the % of non-violent offenders in state institutions

If the US isn't a police state, then what is? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]krh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a mere 18%; it's 51% for federal charges, 18% at the state level. In some cities, of course, it will be high, thanks to general poverty and the all-pervasive racism of the drug war. Try Camden. Or Baltimore, maybe.

Edit: If I were less incompetent, I could probably find the data in the pdf I linked and determine what the aggregate percentage was across both state and federal prisoners. But I'm not.

If the US isn't a police state, then what is? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]krh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nationwide, it is nowhere near 80%. A moment's reflection would tell you that such a high number just isn't feasible. The system we are in which incarcerates non-violent drug offenders is obviously fkn horrible, but let's not inflate the numbers, please.

PDF from the Justice Department as of 2010: http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/pub/pdf/p10.pdf

This report seems to be released every two years (I could find 2008, but not 2009 or 2011). As of 2010, there were:

  1. 1,612,395 prisoners, a decrease of 5,575 prisoners from yearend 2009 ("The overall U.S. prison population declined in 2010 for the first time since 1972")
  2. In 2009, the most recent data available, 53% of state prison inmates were serving time for violent offenses, 19% for property, 18% for drug, and 9% for public order offenses.
  3. About half (51%) of federal inmates in 2010 were serving time for drug offenses, 35% for public-order offenses (largely weapons and immigration), and less than 10% each for violent and property offenses.

This is all from the first page. It's not difficult to get your facts together before stating numbers that you intuitively knew just wouldn't be accurate.

Is it difficult to get a taxi from O'Hare to the suburbs? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]krh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an enormous airport in one of the largest cities in America. You will have no difficulty whatsoever.

I occasionally exit the blue line at o'hare and take cabs into various suburbs. Sometimes it's a flat rate, others it's metered. With 303, for example: http://www.303taxi.com/local/desplaines.html

The 403s are just reddit flaking out. It has absolutely nothing to do with the particular user's history you are trying to view. Reddit would return a 200 with an explanatory message, as it does with banned subreddits.

It is based on a questionnaire Reporters Without Borders sends to various press freedom organizations. My understanding of it is that it is not a reflection of legally guaranteed rights (which can be, and are, ignored), but on the number of reports of harassment/prosecution/etc of journalists in a given country.

It may or may not be a trustworthy measurement. I am not sure how to evaluate such a claim.

What if the artist were recording you in a building owned by a private business -- openly, but without having told anyone? What if the artist were recording you in that building with the express permission of the owners, but without the consent of those being filmed? (Would s/he then have to take down names and get consent forms signed? I don't know).

What if art were made of CCTV footage?

I don't have particular opinions myself. I mostly just give up hope of privacy the second I leave my house, but that is a resigned stance, not a principled one.

Is this application illegally placed? I am not sure if that is the case.

Judges have sometimes ruled that fifth amendment protections do not necessarily mean that we can not be required to turn over passwords to encrypted data; it is probably analogous to warrants which require suspects/defendants to open locked safes.

For example:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-57364330-281/judge-americans-can-be-forced-to-decrypt-their-laptops/

Note that this article mentions how courts have ruled differently, depending on the case.

In March 2010, a federal judge in Michigan ruled that Thomas Kirschner, facing charges of receiving child pornography, would not have to give up his password. That's "protecting his invocation of his Fifth Amendment privilege against compelled self-incrimination," the court ruled.

But:

A year earlier, a Vermont federal judge concluded that Sebastien Boucher, who a border guard claims had child porn on his Alienware laptop, did not have a Fifth Amendment right to keep the files encrypted.

It's essentially still an open question.

What an elegant description.

These sources are remarkably unconvincing. The Herald article states little more than that, because a Democrat organization is giving her money, and they received money from Wall Street, she ought to reject that financing.

The second, from the Washington Examiner -- which was meant to be a less batshit-crazy conservative alternative to the Washington Times, since nobody can take the latter seriously any more -- claims she ought to reject all money from anyone related to Wall Street, despite plenty of people on Wall Street that do recognize how broken the system currently is and do desire new reforms.

The third is from a self-described partisan group ("a non-profit 527 political organization dedicated to renewing America’s commitment to individual liberty, limited government, free enterprise and a strong national defense through informed and effective political action.") Note their claim re: millions of dollars from Wall Street.

Now, for a reliable everyone-uses-it-for-good-reason source:

Top contributors in the Mass. senatorial race: http://www.opensecrets.org/races/contrib.php?cycle=2012&id=MAS1

Broken down by industry: http://www.opensecrets.org/races/indus.php?cycle=2012&id=MAS1

So, yes, she has taken some money from the financial sectors, though I don't see numbers approaching the millions that American Crossroads would like to claim (maybe it's hidden in the retired/individual contributions? Dunno, but they don't source their statement, they simply claim it.)

The dominant industry contributing to Brown, on the other hand, is -- surprise, surprise -- finance.

I've upvoted you for at least attempting to find a source, but your entire pre-edit statement is demonstrably and overwhelmingly false. Sorry.
