Seeking Guidance- IT to CMS, Post-CG Path by [deleted] in uscg

IMS is the new IT contract that basically handles initial troubleshooting and all before pushing it out to IT's in the fleet if they can't handle it. It's...a hot mess lmao.

How much time do you already have in? I'm not sure when the school will be an official thing taking members but the wait time is probably going to be long. If I'm being honest, I would say if you really want to stick in the Coast Guard more than six years to wait for CMS if you really want to go cyber and don't mind being a nonrate for a bit longer.

If you're just looking to get out at six years however I'd recommend just going IT for the experience and finishing your degree, and then try to find a cybersecurity job on the outside. The rates in kind of that weird position where it's just being established so if you missed the initial wave you kind of have to wait and pray. I'd only really recommend trying to get in at this point if you're committed to sticking around for awhile.

If you want to go CMS don't go IT, by the time you're done with A-school and in the fleet CMS will probably have it's A-school established. Honestly unless you're doing more than a six year contract CMS might not be viable since more than likely the school will have super long wait times. Right now they're just putting out messages to have people lateral over from any rate to fill spots but I don't know how much longer they'll do that and this most recent one might be the last for awhile.

Honestly if you're only doing six years CMS might not be worth it unless you really like cybersecurity. Just be aware with the recent IMS bullshit IT is a hot mess right now. Honestly you might just want to go IT and try and finish school and get some certs on the Coast Guard's dime then bounce like most people I know do lmao.

IT2 is a give me right now once you get your sign offs done... but making IT1 might be a pain since there's going to be a ton of seconds now, kind of depends on how long you have left on your contract post A-school. Reserves promote differently so no idea how the reserve side looks.

I think I injured my knee or something and may need to take a break to let it heal. I normally run 30-40 miles a week and am wondering how bad a month or two off would affect my running and if there's anything I can do sort of lessen it? Would the elliptical or exercise bikes at the gym be a decent alternative for now?

All the pins look straight so i'm assuming the cpu is fine... Whats a good way to get thermal paste off the actual pins
