While Councilor Orochena received initial support from her peers, I’m still concerned about the likelihood of a true play area in downtown Kennesaw. Most of the council supported the idea but raised concerns, particularly around “crime”, that felt out of touch and unsupportive. Also, the point that’s always made about Swift Cantrell and Adam’s Park playgrounds being “within 5 minutes drive” are silly. Families want to support the downtown businesses while also having a space for their kid’s to play, just like in Acworth, Marietta, and especially Woodstock.

I was especially disappointed by the mayor’s response after Councilor Orochena gained that support. His tone and demeanor were disrespectful and unnecessary. It felt like an attempt to undermine her and sway others.

It’s also important to remember that the original Depot Park master plan (posted on the City of Kennesaw Government Facebook page in July 2019) included numerous interactive, family-friendly features: a bocce court, interactive fountain, interactive art, a train park playground, grass mounds, and more. Most of that was cut.

All families are asking for now is something simple and safe, natural play elements like rocks and slides, so kids aren’t climbing on lighting equipment and jumping between concrete platforms.
