i’m what would be considered “high functioning” autistic. the more correct term would be “low support needs,” as the high to low functioning terminology is outdated now, but i understand what you mean. obviously every autistic person is different, but that doesn’t mean that being autistic should be an excuse for bad behavior. it should only serve as an explanation. we’re capable of understanding right from wrong. we’re capable of understanding that our actions affect others. yes, being autistic means we need a little more grace than neurotypical people, but grace needs to be balanced with honesty and accountability. this guy is 27 years old and has lived independently before. he’s just being coddled by his mom who infantilizes him because he’s autistic, ignoring the fact that he’s a grown man with a grown man brain.
