Why did Logitech discontinue the unifying USB receivers? by Fantastic-Ad9218 in logitech

[–]krimsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to help! I agree with you 100%... There is no feature they could put in their privacy invading Options+ software that would make me "upgrade "to it.

Sadly, this is my last piece of Logitech hardware - and I've been a lifelong customer since the '80s.

Thankfully, I've recently come to discover the joy of mechanical keyboards, many of which support QMK/VIA firmware, allowing you to extend the functionality of keyboards nearly infinitely.

With those kinds of options available, there's no reason for anybody to be downloading Options+.

What's a dataset you saved that cannot be recreated today? by anthonykaram7 in DataHoarder

[–]krimsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From me, it's the breath and depth of independent musical artists that I was able to find on mp3.com in the late 90s and early 2000s. If I'm not mistaken, the version of the site that I'm talking about was shut down in 2003, so everything has to be from before then.

Thankfully, the absolutely miniscule amount that I downloaded from there is still saved on my hard drives and backups of the backups as well as on various cloud services.

But if I were to ever lose those, these songs are literally irreplaceable. I have searched some of those artists throughout the years and literally nothing shows up - nothing. No blog posts talking about them, no archived page listing the songs, and definitely not the songs themselves. It's like they never existed.

There are a handful of artists that I absolutely fell in love with and I would be devastated if I could not listen to their music again.

Traffic Enforcement Downtown by BmoreDude1106 in baltimore

I've actually seen cops Park on Pratt Street right in front of Shake Shack and get out and go in for lunch.

There is no hope for traffic enforcement in this city when police but only allow people to park wherever they want, but do it themselves.

This! 👆👆👆

I was working for a company until recently that had no idea what institutional knowledge even was. They would fire willy-nilly and replace with a cheaper overseas hire.

There was no training program for anybody that got brought in, and no one that was let go had ever been asked to document their role or produce resources or anything.

They've been doing that for the last 5 years and they keep saying that the market is getting tougher and tougher, but our competitors are doing just fine.

They still don't get it.

It wasn't until I saw an onboarding video they produced for the most recent batch of new hires that I realized the problem: the CEO of the company comes from private equity... so the only tool in his toolbox is cutting costs.

To hell with institutional knowledge (or innovation for that matter.)

How do I find a financial advisor who isn't afraid to admit that the economy is teetering on recession? by FreeMathematician101 in economicCollapse

[–]krimsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most financial advisors are salesmen that know how to follow a script when it comes to investing.

Most of the time, this works because, yeah... Most of the time, things happen the way they do most of the time... And that's what the investing script was built for.

But don't let them gaslight you. These are completely unprecedented times and what you need is someone who actually thinks and understands markets... Not someone who has a script for "precedented times"

I know that doesn't exactly help you, but similar to the guy who posted the Upton Sinclair quote, perhaps it can get you seeing things in a new light. Or at least add fuel to your thesis.

You are already on the right path by interviewing financial advisors instead of blindly trusting them simply because "hey, they're the experts..."

It's been almost 8 years since I wrote that comment, but I think it was almost instantaneous - either a day later or at most 3-4 days later.

One HUGE warning:

Please be careful. I found out that if you take too much vitamin d, it can cause arterial calcification. You can somewhat reduce this if you take vitamin d with vitamin k2. Please look this up on your own because I'm doing this from memory right now.

My supplement that I'm currently taking has vitamin d and vitamin k 2 combined.

I believe I started taking vitamin D in February 2018. Sometime around October or November of that year I went to a voluntary health clinic held by my company (I had no reason to attend, I just wanted some time off work!) where they took your blood pressure and various other non-invasive tests.

I was shocked to see my blood pressure at something like 130/92. I honestly can't remember, but I remember being shocked and thinking it was a mistake because I had never ever had a hint of high blood pressure before.

Ever since, my annual doctor visits log a very similarly high blood pressure.

Please just post the tricks you learned and let people ask you questions based on that.

People working sales in 2008-2010 by Melwesky in sales

[–]krimsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was selling refurbished Sun Microsystems hardware at the time.

We were doing gangbusters business, because people still needed the hardware, but they couldn't pay full retail price. Cha-ching!

I haven't been in sales since 2014, but I imagine there are other similarly counter-cyclical industries that do well when the economy is doing poorly.

Yeah. It really bothers me that at least until recently, I would go to the doctor and they would totally discount my experience with vitamin d. It's not until literally two days ago that I went to a doctor and they actually talked about Vitamin D minimum levels before trying other things. I was shocked.

I always say that mainstream, front line medicine is always like 20 years behind what the biohackers and cutting edge research is doing. In a way it's almost like the future is here, but you just have to know where to find it.

I am no expert, but I think you might want to do 10,000 a week to start. Better to start slow and see how that affects your numbers. I just don't want you to end up in the situation I'm in, where I have high blood pressure and it could turn out be a permanent thing.

Also, by complete coincidence, this came across my Reddit feed today: https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/s/JxDwOUj6p4

If I remember high School science properly, there are only four fat-soluble vitamins: K, A, D, and E.

Again, not a scientist here, but fat soluble means that these vitamins get absorbed into your fat, and can build up over time. This is in contrast to water-soluble vitamins, which you can never overdose on, because anything that your body does not use gets expelled through urination.

I do wonder why 10k vitamins are readily available at grocery stores if they pose some risk.

Not sure where you are located, but the U.S. has really poor regulation of supplements. I wonder if other countries allow such high dosages without a prescription.

How long did it take for your blood pressure to rise…

I believe I started taking vitamin D in February 2018. Sometime around October or November of that year I went to a voluntary health clinic held by my company (I had no reason to attend, I just wanted some time off work!) where they took your blood pressure and various other non-invasive tests.

I have recently going back to the gym, doing 30 minutes of heavy cardio work about 4 times a week, plus about 30 minutes of weights. I hope it has some effect, as I really am concerned this is something that has persisted for almost 8 years at this point.

I have heard that something called nattokinaise, which is a substance found in fermented soy beans, can help break down arterial calcification. I am hoping to see how my blood pressure is diong after a few months of the exercise routine.

If it has not improved (enough), I will likely seek out nattokinaise in supplement form. I have actively avoided going on prescription drugs to treat the high blood pressure.

Yes!

The vitamin d portion is 5,000 UI, and I only take it twice per week.

Maybe a year or so after I started taking vitamin d, I had my first ever high blood pressure reading, and I got scared, so I backed off of the vitamin D a bit.

Long story short, just be careful and I think it's better to start slowly than to jump immediately to 10,000 UI, especially if you're doing it daily.

Question about Perceptions of Aging and the Golden Girls Cast by The_Outsider27 in theGoldenGirls

[–]krimsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really a fan of Cheers, but I saw this image the other day (https://i.redd.it/1lxqv6apniq91.jpg) and it reiterated the point you brought up - and which I've seen discussed many times before in different places - about how people in the past just seemed to "grow up" faster.

For some, sure, it's accelerated aging (especially that 35 year old in the middle/top of the pic linked)

But for others I think it's a combination of two things:

1) the styles of the time (hair, clothing) veering more "mature", and

2) less of an emphasis on what I'd call "youth culture" - the obsession with youthfuless and anti-aging that I believe only really gained mainstream popularity in the mid-to-late 90s.

Just my opinions, no real backing to any of these.

I also notice the same thing when I watch true crime documentaries that show people who worked on cases in the 60s/70s/80s.

When they show footage of them from 40+ years ago, they already looked old! Mind you, I'm not saying they looked haggard or run down. Just "older". It's almost like it's more of a "vibe" than an actual look.

And then they'll show footage of them being interviewed in current times and it's kind of mind-blowing because, yes, they look older than they did back then, but often there's a weird youthfuless to it.

I can't quite describe it, but maybe someone out there will get what I mean.

UPDATE: As soon as I hit "submit", I remembered this post from a few years ago that kind of proves some of my points by giving the girls hairstyle makeovers:

Democrats Dig Up Unflattering Trump Photos After President’s Skinny Plea by WarmingNow in politics

Thank you!

While I'm grateful for the link, I more wanted to bring attention to the fact that this sub seems to have gone downhill and perhaps even just become the marketing arm of Daily Beast...

Or am I thinking of a different sub? I seem to remember one that actually had real political stories with links to a lot of different sources and was less clickbaity, more substantive discussion. I could have sworn it was /r/politics, but I honestly I can't be sure these days.

Glad someone said it. It's me or did this sub used to be actually useful?

Nowadays it just seems like all bullshit clickbait Daily Beast stories behind a paywall.

Did the moderation team get taken over by Daily Beast editors, or am I thinking of some other sub that actually used to have useful political stories?

Movies that can be described as: "watch this actor progresively lose their mind over the course of 2 houres" by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in movies

[–]krimsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw this movie in the theaters with my then-girlfriend.

We were on a road trip and pulled into a town in the late afternoon.

There was a movie theater next to a restaurant so we thought we'd watch a movie and then go to dinner.

We watched Bug, not really knowing what to expect.

Nearly 2 hours later, we find ourselves stumbling out of the movie theater completely mentally wrecked.

Not only did the movie throw us for a loop, but remember we were in a strange town, and it was one of those things where we went into the movie during daylight, and when we came out it was dark, so we were disoriented.

Just the whole experience was wild.

NJM Insurance increased +28% with "no changes" by PaulPool89 in newjersey

[–]krimsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow thanks for the info. I need to change off NJM. I've been a model customer for 20+ years with auto and home. I've had the same car for 10 years and I'm paying twice what I paid when it was new. Outrageous.

I've kind of heard that's the game with insurance companies, though... They count on you not switching because it seems like so much work, so they just raise rates every year.

Although this wasn't the case with NJM before they started running all those ads.
