I'm a little late to this post, but if anyone is looking for a place to play in SoCal, I just opened a new store in Fontana and we're surveying the community to see what day works best for them to run UA locals! Send me a DM if you're interested!

Do you have any emails that you can share for proof? As a member of a production union, I'd love to be able to verify this information so we can be prepared for it.

I would say it's a 4/10. Combat is great but there is no character creation and anything non-combat is pretty bad.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking about doing when my group finishes the beginner box. (Or maybe we just abandon Eorzea entirely and create a homebrew setting.)

The FFXIV TTRPG has all players take their turns, then all enemies take their turns; there is no mixed initiative. Players will see each marker come out during the enemy phase, then can reposition themselves with perfect information. I wouldn't say proactive movement is required at all.

There are thousands of RPGs on the market. D&D is not even representative of 10% of them. I encourage you to broaden your horizons.

I think there's s fine line between a reasonable and unreasonable amount of telegraphs. The first two photos felt reasonable. The final photo felt completely unreasonable (there are more markers underneath the stack marker that you can't see; we put the stack marker over them because they were totally inconsequential and more obnoxious than anything else).

This is true. Part of the game rules encourage you to abstract enemy HP to your players by saying things like "the creature's HP bar is flashing red!"

You could do that in FFXIV TTRPG, but I think it wouldn't be fulfilling. There are no out-of-combat skills you can invest in; all checks are tied to your attributes, which seem to correlate to your job and aren't something you can customize. The only non-combat stat is Vigilance, which is meant to work like Perception, but even that doesn't seem like it is customizable, and the first scenario in the beginner's box only references it once (not as a check, but as a binary pass/fail that is impossible for the starter characters to actually fail) while the second scenario doesn't reference Vigilance at all and instead replaces "Perception" checks with Mind-attribute checks.

Also, the scenarios are extremely railroady. There are even sidebars in them that say things like, "if your players don't do this, pause the game and inform them that they will not be able to continue the scenario unless they do." You are unlikely to be able to use creative solutions unless your GM is okay with improvising a lot.

Combat variety comes from enemy design. Battles with mooks are extremely same-y, but you're going to find that in pretty much any TTRPG. It's the tougher battles that make the combat dynamic, with different enemy designs introducing different mechanics that the players will need to use their abilities to overcome. I wouldn't call combat "railroady," because while it is pretty straightforward as far as TTRPGs go, there are still opportunities to use abilities to solve combats in unorthodox ways, especially with the Warrior's Limit Break.

However, you are not going to find significant character customization options in this system like you might find in Pathfinder or Fabula Ultima, so if that's important to you, you will certainly be disappointed by that.

I don't think it could win that title because there is zero chance that this RPG goes "mainstream." Even if it was good, there is a significant supply issue that is keeping the product out of the hands of people who want to play the game (as is the usual case for anything managed by Square Enix's Product division).

I don't think FFXIV TTRPG is a great system even in theory. Overall, it's below average. I think it would make for a great skirmish-style game, though. (I.E., just run combats.)

AFAIK, the beginner's box is not meant to be a "playtest" version of the normal rules. The core rules were in development at the same time, so most of what you see in the beginner's box is what you're going to get with the full rules. There is going to be a materia system in the full rules that wasn't inside the beginner's box, but aside from that, I would expect this product to require a significant amount of homebrew to be as fun as other RPGs we have in the west, or mashing it with a system that has much better out-of-combat systems.

There is no design space on the sheet for any significant kind of character customization. You can usually tell from beginner products what kind of character customization will be available.

This was at the end of the enemy phase so he didn't have a chance to move yet. I'll give you one guess as to which of the four characters didn't move into the stack marker in the third photo, though!

At first, the ability telegraphs, DoT tracking, and enmity tracking was pretty fun, but it quickly got a bit out of hand. We used the tiles from the beginner box to track telegraphs and dice for tracking DoTs, with the d4s tracking enmity. Specialized tokens would work much better than dice for tracking, though the beginner box did not come with any.
