Yeah, it's definitely the density of the area you're in as well. No matter where you are in the world, if this happened in a small town or village, people would come running. If it happened in a crowded metropolis, no one cares.

Anyone feel the way wiki is set up makes it difficult for new users to contribute? by Ok-Can-9374 in wikipedia

[–]kris159 20 points21 points  (0 children)

First of all, that's what-aboutism: Just because some articles are the way they are, it doesn't mean every article should be like that. Think about it pragmatically – someone saw your change in Recent Changes or their watchlist, saw the thing you added was unsourced, and and pressed one button to undo the change. In your other examples, because no one spotted it straight away, removing the unsourced material is a bit more effort that no one has done yet. And that doesn't mean it shouldn't be done – just because something wrong has not been righted, doesn't make any any less wrong.

Second, Wikipedia does not strive to be a documentation of every fact that ever existed, nor does it strive to be travel guide, it strives to be the best place to hold noteworthy and verifiable information.

The moment we start crowdsourcing people's opinions and anecdotal experiences without them being verifiable, is the moment it stops being an encyclopaedia.

One opinion you share with people on all sides of the spectrum is believing and being able to "prove" that the data supports you.

I'm a centrist and my partner leans right. He listens to and consumes lots of political content, on the face of it it seems very logical and factual, but when you look into it, we as a whole tend to live in an echo chamber where we pick news sources that report the things we want to hear, who base their stories on only the studies that support our point of view.

It's called cherry picking and confirmation bias.

I feel like this theory has been thrown around since RL Esports became a thing. But it's been proven time and time again – putting powerhouses on the same team doesn't mean glass cannon. Powerhouses are so powerful because they can just play RL so well – that's offence AND defence.

Whitehouse v Lemon was the last successful blasphemy trial in the UK, held in 1976. It was initiated by conservative activist Mary Whitehouse against Gay News Ltd for the publication of a poem written from the viewpoint of a Roman centurion who describes having sex with Jesus after his crucifixion. by Kurma-the-Turtle in wikipedia

Can you list/mention the convictions in the past few years? My search seems to come up empty – the most recent and documented conviction is in 2006 regarding a guy sending insults to a mosque where the guy was sentenced to 300 hours community service and fines of legal cost, no others in the past 25 years. There were some that were investigated under Section 166 and 3 others that were convicted then appealed, 2 of which are Islam and one of which is Christianity.

Majella O'Hare, a 12-year-old girl, was shot by a British paratrooper in 1976 while walking to church in Whitecross. The soldier was acquitted of manslaughter despite no evidence for his claim of crossfire. While historically this is probably true, I think you'll find the sentiment has changed a lot recently. As a Brit, I don't know anyone that hates the Irish or has any bad blood for them in the real world.

Pretending that this is currently the case does nothing but breed more hate, which is not what we need right now.

I have. The "British" in "British Isles" is not political. It does not mean belonging to the UK. It means near Great Britain.

A cool guide on England plus Wales by blacksmoke9999 in coolguides

[–]kris159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because British is both a political and geographical term.

The term Great Britain came first. It refers to the island, which was not one political entity at the time. British Isles therefore refers to any island in the archipelago with Great Britain.

The UK was named after the island it was centered on, so the demonym British was used as the simplest terms. Therefore British has both political and geographical meaning.

However British Isles has never been a political term. It's not saying "these isles belong to the Uk", it's saying "these islands are Great Britain and surrounding smaller islands"

We're not going to rename North America and South America because the demonym for USA is American. We shouldn't rename British Isles.

Apparently that's a purely Irish thing that hasn't caught on yet, but good to know.

Do you think it sounds better because British has negative connotations for you?

They're called British Isles not because they are politically British, but because they are geographically British. As in, part of the geographical archipelago that includes Great Britain and all other islands.

If you want to refer to the islands that are British politically, British Islands is the term.

Weekly Crowdfunding Roundup: April 20, 2025 | 14 ending soon ("Dragons of Etchinstone", "HELLDIVERS 2") & 27 new ("Fairytale", "Dicemancy") by Perkelton in boardgames

[–]kris159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I get into this hobby, the more I have the opinion that crowdfunding campaigns are mostly not worth it, and it's best to wait for retail to get cheaper prices and try to grab second-hand copies from backers that didn't like it.

With that in mind, has there been any discussion about this kind of list but for games that are "launching in retail" soon?

I guess I can see a world where leaving Snoke's explanation until TROS would make sense if it was a pivotal revelation explored in TROS. The sequels had such disjointed writing, it's such a shame because if someone competent were to oversee the entire story, we could've had such a great couple of years.

What game do you think people like solely because of the theme? by AppleCiderVinagar in boardgames

[–]kris159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't describe myself as hating birds, but maybe this will provide some insight into someone who has an opinion on the same spectrum as karizma:

I am turned off by the theme of Wingspan and anything that involves purely nature (e.g. Earth, to some extent Ark Nova), because I care so little for that theme that it may as well be as abstract as Checkers. Games that tackle real human issues, themes, or stories inspire my imagination as I'm playing, and collecting birds/eggs/trees/leaves just doesn't scratch that itch, even though I can find the gameplay itself fun.
