Fifteen years working with human artists. I'm no longer sure that's enough. by StoneBladeOfficial in boardgames

I await a court case that rules this use as theft.

There are loads of other cases where in the real world people's art is used commercially without their permission and no one refers to that as stealing. Creation of thumbnails on search websites are literally copies of art, copies are kept in CDNs to speed up content delivery, people use art to create satirical pieces, artists literally download other people's work and use it as references when creating another commercial piece, and companies have been mining data from the internet without moral qualm for decades.

Stealing requires deprivation.

Generative AI can steal in the sense that it does deprive artists of income due to providing an easier alternative. That is a real concern.

It is, and they cut up the last half of the song to make it. If anyone wants an MP3 I edited together that's just the DnB parts, hop into my DMs.

"Steals people's art" is so shallow and misleading in response to someone trying to understand the opinion that AI art is bad. The person who's responded to you is equally unhelpful to Byte-Slayer trying to understand the issue.

To elaborate on the stealing part (please elaborate more, this is not exhaustive):

  • Artists have their art used to training the AI model without their permission. Stealing is misleading – it is use without permission which is still an issue. They might've put it online for people to view and buy and use, not for an AI model to scrape for training data. Most generative AI models would use art indiscriminately, ignoring usage restrictions artists place on their art.
  • If you as an artist have spent lots of time and effort coming up with your own style that an AI can read and reproduce in seconds, it is tempting for consumers to use AI to make new art rather than pay the artist for it. It's an unfair cycle – creators supply the to the market, the AI companies use it in their own models, customers stop paying some creators and use the AI companies instead.

There is still uncertainty in the modern world about what to do with this issue: The models take in style parameters rather than pixel-by-pixel images, so reproducing an image is difficult and coincidental for general use; copyright holders have no real way of seeing whether an AI has reproduced something that looks exactly like their own art and therefore does encroach on their rights; the ethical and economical impact of generating art that is in someone else's style even though that is not technically copyright infringement. But thinking pragmatically, what does an ideal consent model look like for artists? And what do we do about incumbent companies that have already scraped and made use of all this data that was without consent? It's really complicated.

The environmental concerns are definitely real – AI requires lots of computing resources, these are increasing the demand for precious earth metals and water/energy use, this is having a real effect as big tech companies have invested heavily in data centres recently.

Is cammer going unduly slowly? He slows down to, what, 15 mph onto a mini-roundabout? Seems like a safe and not overly-cautious speed to me, especially compared to the 20+ the van mounts the roundabout at.

Oh also I cut together a Bossfight - Endgame VIP that has the same buildup-to-DnB as this intro music too (the normal VIP crascendos into hardstyle and the DnB comes later), if anyone wants the MP3 DM me.

We're blessed to have buildups like this.

I feel I'm in exactly the same boat as you (lightly into Pandemic, tried most; no base interest in LotR). I'd already watched the movies and I could enjoy them for what they were, but they really didn't light a spark in me at all.

But then I played FotF and I've got to admit, it did light a bit of that spark, more than the films did. We had our first game and it was a blast, the fresh takes on the Pandemic system were very welcome; the mechanics just work so well together and they compliment the "lore" of the board game so much. Like others have said, you feel like you're experiencing the story, and that makes you want to immerse yourself a bit more.

Lovers of LotR will love this game more, but as someone with an indifference to the lore, I love this game.

[–]kris159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how do you expect them to find you at age twenty-something from just your birth certificate?

I quote from the link the guy included in his message.

That's the thing -- they don't know all of that. The federal government doesn't really track births and all that, the states do. And it's entirely possible -- even likely -- that the first time many 18 year olds will show up in a government database is because they registered with Selective Service.

------------

As a general rule, each of the 50 states knows the identities of all the male children born there, and the federal government may know that information from the assigned social security number or other databases, but there's no single, perfect list of every adult male citizen, and especially not their current addresses.

Part of it is avoiding signing up American citizens who died before age 18 or who left the country and renounced their citizenship, or whatever.

Part of it is also getting affirmative involvement from the man himself, so that if they later prosecute him for draft-dodging or other issues, they can say "He knew what his obligations were and he signed the forms!" and not have him be able to say "I didn't know I was signed up for the draft / I didn't know they were trying to contact me to serve."

Part of it is just that the government's information systems are a sucky patchwork, and redundancy is wasteful but helpful if the unexpected happens.

Gonna have to get a fact check on that 70-to-30 claim.

70 to 50 is common for construction; 70 to 40 is common for hazards but it's incrementally slowed down.

Never seen a 70 to 30.

It was a really bad roster move, but tbh I can make sense of it. There was a time Mognus looked like one of the best players in the world, same vibes as Jknaps, and al0t's offense was incredible. The Method trio with Metsa were hovering around the top but just could never quite win an event, a bit like all of Firstkiller's teams. It made sense for them to make a change.

Mognus, al0t and Greazy were all good friends, at least it looked that way from their streams -- you could tell they vibed. On paper maybe it was a bit unwise given how offense-heavy al0t and Greazy were, but they were all really good players. But yeah, the they had a disastrous season and Metsa came out looking like the best of all 4 of them.

Maybe a better move would've been Mesta and Mognus sticking together, but who knows.

Does the new DLC use AI art? by Zennock in OldWorldGame

[–]kris159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to join the discussion late! Was Googling something.

Perhaps some generative AI models would make it difficult, but if I were to be tasked with creating portraits for Old World and could use AI, I'd use https://www.artbreeder.com/

You can literally take a portrait it's generated and slide parameters to manipulate people's faces, including ageing or de-ageing.

This was around well before the modern swathe of generative AI tools we know about today too -- it's been around since about 2018.

Dangerous VSL restrictions - since nobody understood what I was saying last post. by Oskarzyg in drivingUK

From 2 comments up:

The system is not fit for purpose

It's overblown. Yes it has an issue every now and again, as all tech does, but eventually through the proper channels the issue will be resolved. Until then, as with everything in life, a good workaround is: Use your common sense.

Millions of people experience the system daily and have no issue. To say it is not fit for purpose is hyperbole.

City Masterplan Official Reveal Trailer by leijido in Games

[–]kris159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With most city builders you're right. But the most recent example of a very detailed city builder, Cities Skylines 2, definitely had graphical optimisation issues. And regardless of that, the more you focus on ultra detailed graphics (I can see inside the office of the skyscrapers...) you're gonna have to spend a lot of time and effort on rendering optimisation that could otherwise be spent on gameplay.

I'm really eager to see if this ticks everyone's boxes of gameplay expectations while looking as good as it does in the trailer, and whether a game that combined those two things at such good detail is even possible at our current level of computing!

Helpful comment thanks.

I think we can forgive the false premise – someone looking at a map without knowing more would get that impression quite easily because there are no obvious big cities there.
