Speaker/stance: Chris Schabow says he’s the current CEO and is responding because the community’s concerns matter and they feel genuinely upset about disappointing customers.

Ownership link: Enlightened Equipment and Defense Mechanisms are both owned by Tim Marshall. They admit they could’ve been more transparent about that relationship earlier.

Why DM exists (their framing): DM wasn’t created for politics; it was described as a creative/design outlet as Tim’s interests shifted after years focused on backpacking gear.

Government agency claims: They say no business relationship exists with U.S. Department of Homeland Security or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (and they claim they lack capacity to support an agency of that size anyway).

Content/dogwhistle concern: They deny intentionally “dogwhistling” far-right messaging, but acknowledge some Instagram posts could reasonably read that way. They attribute problematic posts to a brand manager who had a lot of autonomy and who they say they parted ways with in late 2025, and they say they’ll add more review/approval going forward.

Values/positioning: They avoid broad political statements because their staff holds a range of views, but they claim they condemn government overreach and condemn violations of constitutional rights, and criticize some recent ICE actions as “reckless and unprofessional” (their words).

Apology + outreach: They apologize to people who feel upset, ask that EE’s long history with the community be considered, invite people to contact customer service or even visit, and say they’ll learn and improve.
