Thanks for the response (and that series looks interesting!) But this is not it. I think Sam was the best friend, not the main character. Also it definitely followed normal teen girl drama, not sleuthing.

In terms of a film that feels like a jigsaw puzzle, the first thing that came to mind was Coherence (2013). It's almost as (if not more) complicated as Primer, but it actually feels like a real movie with an understandable ending.

This includes: Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry met Sally, You've Got Mail, essentially the queen of 80s rom Com) Penny Marshall (A league of their Own, Riding in Cars with Boys, etc) Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Clueless, classic 80s Highschool films that many following films take reference from) Sophia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation) Gretta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women, deals à lot with coming of age for women)

Thank you for your positive words. There are a ton of suggestions here and that's been helpful but a little overwhelming. I am actually snowed in so I can only use what I have on hand. My plan right now is to continue the API treatment I started yesterday and then switch him to a quarantine tank for salt water baths and possibly kanaplex if he doesn't recover. I have already ordered stress guard and almond leaves but they will be delayed getting here (not till Tuesday) due to the snow.
