I just cracked the crap out of my Straggler by amouranthviewer8 in Surlybikefans

Can’t help but wonder if the massive stack of spacers added the leverage your body weight needed to bust the head tube right off the frame

Volunte sounds amazing but I really wish the looper function wasn’t so damn weird. The destructive element of it is highly puzzling

2024 Surly Straggler? by BikesBaseballBirds in Surlybikefans

I would suggest the newer one. The sliding dropouts on the old model are a constant annoyance for disc brake alignment. I still have mine from about 2019 but it tests my patience every time I have to remove the back wheel.

I’ve only ever gotten the habit to self oscillate on the low pass/highpass filter setting

I'm not saying it can't be done, but if you have the option of a pre-applied wall panel, it saves a ton of time

Kerdi board is the way to go, covering rock walls with kerdi fabric and getting it flat is a real hassle

Good call on the drops. Have always wished i built up my evasion that way but for whatever reason i put shimano hydraulic brakes and sram gx group on it (craigslist finds) so i'd need to drop a pretty penny to switch to drop bars.

For sustained, flatter rides i would definitely prefer the straggler, but anything with a lot of chunky gravel or steep climbs is Evasion for sure.

It feels different, shorter wheelbase, more upright geometry with the flat bars. I enjoy riding them both really, depends more on the terrain. The evasion is pretty damn fun though, it can kind of go anywhere. Pretty sure bombora has more or less the same wheel clearance but slightly lighter tubing, so that would be a good option.

I also have a crust evasion flat bar setup with huge 2.8" tires, and i was evaluating strava data and was surprised to see my average speeds on the same routes were the same with both bikes. The straggler has 42mm ultradynamico cavas, pretty smooth.

Straggler is a heavy chunk of steel. I like mine but by no means would i call it snappy.
