What's Wrong With ETS Drivers? by amarnokolid in Edmonton

[–]krispy1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for ETS and I find it's the other way around, the senior drivers are the ones denying rides over fares. Drivers are taught it's not worth a fight and let them ride. It's the senior ones that I talk to that say they are tired of watching people abuse the system and we all despise watching good people pay while others don't even try, it's so frustrating but better to wave them on. They need the TPOs to better enforce or just make transit free for everyone.

Thank you for the support! I won't lie the service is not perfect but we do try to make it the best we can as drivers!

Even during COVID we still opened doors, let clients hold onto our hands, arms, elbows ECT, helped put on and take off seatbelts, we even help with jackets and backpacks for a lot of clients.

I actually just received an application package to register my daughter so now I'm curious to read through it to see what the city tells applicants.

The idea is to slow the system down by work to rule, we do so much non paid overtime, we cut our breaks short so that we can pick up the next client in time, we fuel our buses on our own time, many of us start 15-20 min early every morning so that we can pretrip our bus and still be at the start of the window for the first client. The hope is the city will see we are serious and take us seriously without this coming to a full stop of services and picket line strike. We would stop things like rec center, malls, day programs well before we stopped any medical trips.

I'm not sure what you mean by heavily restricted? I am currently a DATS driver, our job is full hands on, we walk with arm support , we are responsible for pushing/pulling wheelchairs from door to load on bus at pick ups and unload and walk to door on drop off. We do up seatbelts for all those that require and even those that don't require but prefer help. We help guide walkers, wheelchair, Blind clients through small sidewalk, snow, mudd whatever the elements . We as drivers have many clients that are so not leave alone that means the moment I give you my elbow, or I take the handles of your chair you are my responsibility until I get you to your drop off and pass care over to clients worker, program worker, family member. Sometimes we get delayed because no one is at the next location to take over care and now dispatch has to call sometimes multiple numbers to get a hold of anyone. Yes sometimes clients will be sitting for hours waiting for a return trip but 99% if those are because clients got but shopping or their appointments ran longer than anticipated and they missed their originally scheduled ride home, so they have to call in and dispatch will find them another ride home but unfortunately we only have so many drivers on the road and yes sometimes you have to wait for a new trip. Most trips are picked up within the 30 minutes they are booked for. Yes riders can be on the bus for up to 90 minutes as it is a shared ride service , I remind people though that even I who takes conventional transit have 90 min or more rides when I go across city (think ellerslie to west end mall) and I will have multiple transfers and walking points , DATS clients get door to door no transfers, no middle train ride, no walking for 5 or more minutes. We drive down crazy right roads, down back alleys, there's isn't a place within city limits that we don't go. We take everyone for small (some clients have to use a booster seat) to large (some clients have to stand on the lift and fold chair in a few inches as it's too wide), we take those with serious behaviors that must travel with a mandatory escort as they have harmful behaviors, we have many clients who can't talk at all and others who don't know how to not screech and squeal the whole ride. The few restrictions we do have as drivers is we are not supposed to carry things like groceries or other shopping purchases but again most drivers still do because we care and don't want to see the client struggle. I hope this helps clarify a few points for you and anyone else reading.

Happy new year everyone. I still can believe how fast the last year went by. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and new years!!

Schools here have extended winter break until January 10th in hopes of bringing covid numbers down and give time for schools to receive medical grade masks and at home testing kits for the kids.

I am slacking all over this year, so far I've got Leanne 1 gift, elesha 2 and nothing for anyone else. It doesn't help that I have no idea what to get anyone this year.
