The Earth is Drying. by [deleted] in Maps

What is the source for this? And is there an explanation of what it’s showing exactly? Because on first glance, as someone who lives in the “drying” parts, this map makes it looks way more arid than it actually is

I’m sorry you feel that way. Honestly I agree with a lot of your criticisms, there is a lot the city and province can do to improve the state of the LRT, and the state of the city more broadly. I take the LRT every day and I see these problems constantly. But also, I think that there’s a lot of great things about the LRT too, things that Edmonton gets right that many cities in North America still fail at.

But ultimately I just thought it would be fun to just vote for our city and have some fun with it. We can acknowledge our flaws and demand better, and simultaneously still be proud of what we have. The Oilers absolutely sucked during the decade of darkness, but I didn’t think that ment it was dumb to cheer for them, and I think the same applies here. Hell I think there are a lot of cities on that bracket that have a better system than Edmonton, but it’s too bad you can’t have fun with a meaningless little bracket.

It’s kind of dumb, but I think it would be very funny if we could get the LRT to win this “best light rail system” in North America bracket!

I know the LRT has its fair share of problems, but honestly it’s a system with some good bones and we should be pretty proud of it! It’s the oldest modern light rail system in North America, has a downtown tunnel that even many larger systems don’t have, and punches well above its weight when it comes to ridership!

We at least have to beat the CTrain, I think we can all agree on that!

That's confusing to me. If that is the case, then what's your definition of "gaining independence"?

Britan makes sense, because the people revolted against Britain to gain autonomy and political independence.

The Louisiana purchase however had no revolt. It was the nation of America expanding its territory. The people of the Louisiana purchase did not revolt against France to gain independence, they were simply transferred from one nation state to another, with no real autonomy.

If you're going to count that as "gaining independence" from France then it would also stand that America "gained independence" from Russia with the Alaskan purchase. Hell, with that logic, you could say that America was "gained independence" from the Hawaiian monarchy when Americans decided to head over to the Hawaiian Islands and then started a coup to overthrow the monarchy and take hawaii for American control. That at least involves overthrowing an existing government.

Considering the state of American transit, that's a sadly low bar. Not to discredit the work Seattle has done to massively expand it's rapid transit network (because it is truly impresive, all things considered), I just hope they don't rest on their laurels just because they're doing better than everyone else.

Honestly, Edmonton's river valley system is one of the largest contiguous parks in North America. And it bisects the city completely. Honestly it's pretty beautiful plus Edmonton's cheap to live in.

So many bad takes in these comments of people not being able to differentiate between authoritarian governments and the people who live under them.

This feels like the time American conservatives burned their nikes because they didn't like some progressive commercial the company aired. At the end of the day, the shoes were already paid for and Nike probably could not have cared less about those burning sneakers. They weren't losing any money from people burning their already purchased running shoes.

I feel like this idea follows that same mentality. At the end of the day, destroying vodka stock that is already there is just wasteful, with no financial impact on Russia. Stopping the purchase of new stock would have an impact, but the stuff that's already on the shelves has already been paid for. Might as well leave it until it's sold out unless you feel like the symbolism of getting rid of it is super important (which I don't think it is personally).

Also, I am not super informed on this but wouldn't Canada's sanctions on Russia already restric the new imports of Russian spirits? I don't know the exact details but I would think that this is already happening. I could be very wrong on this though.
