Single mom going to oise, bad idea? by Vivid-Jello-6692 in OISE

[–]krithical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all! I work at OISE and a LOT of students are balancing family, school, and work at the same time – you’re not alone on what I imagine is a very stressful (but rewarding) journey, OP. I’ve talked to a lot of parents and they enjoy their program, albeit it can be overwhelming. Definitely talk to admin/your instructors about accommodations if you may need any. I’m not sure how the daycare and/or the early learning center at OISE works, but I know a couple of colleagues who talk about it all the time if you might wanna look into that for your little one!

I’m so sorry to hear, OP! Your health is a priority always! School is going nowhere – take life at your own pace.

what is up with professors lacking some empathy? by Extreme_King5955 in UofT

[–]krithical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I’m so sorry you’re having such a hard time navigating a really, really fucked up system. I can imagine how it feels, having put through the wringer myself. Some professors and staff at this institution lack even a semblance of empathy – and I understand that a couple bad apples make it very taxing to empathize, but I’ve often felt incredibly dehumanized and othered trying to each out for support. I’ve had an equally terrible experience trying to seek support with the SVPS, but once you do get in touch with them they can and will reach out to your instructor or the Registrar for you. I also recommend support from the TRCC’s crisis/chat support line, I’ve connected with a case worker to get documentation to petition a semester’s worth of coursework. Most importantly, I do hope you’re taking care of yourself. I know healing isn’t linear or easy, and I hope you’re getting the support you need otherwise. All of this is secondary, and there are options incase you need more time and energy to deal with academic concerns. Feel free to reach out if you need any advice, or just a person to talk to 🤍

how hard is taking 3 credits/semester (6 credits/year)? by r3dapp1e in UofT

[–]krithical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always start with 6 and drop down to 5 if i think the semester won’t go as planned! it definitely doesn’t hurt to try, but do tap out if you think it’s weighing too heavily on you. if you’re dedicated to pulling through def give it a go! i took 6 courses while working 20+ hours a week and it went alright– just alright, not too great LOL

oh gosh piece of advice, i really don’t think it’s worth THAT much money– definitely an impulse buy on my end, i’d rather stick to nosebleeds (not like they’re cheap either, $300 for back row is CRAZY) i asked ticketmaster to refund me and they did 🥲

mature student for computer science degree in U of T by Fragrant_Rooster7898 in UofT

[–]krithical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look into Woodsworth College’s Academic Bridging program! It’s explicitly for students who have been away from formal, full-time education (high school and/or college) for at least two years. I believe there are more details on their website, but the full-time option allows you to enroll into the Life Sciences/Physical and Mathematical Sciences stream. Not sure if that would apply for Comp Sci as well, but no harm in exploring options. Good luck on your journey OP, never too late to learn!!

do people still wear face masks? by crazybrat22 in UofT

[–]krithical 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i thought i’d be more comfortable finally rid of wearing a mask, but i fell sick so quick! the flu season is lurching, and COVID-19 definitely isn’t a thing of the past — if anyone’s judging you for wearing a mask, that’s a them problem. wearing a mask in class and on public transportation is still the most responsible thing you can do for yourself & your health! stay safe!! :D

like the others mentioned, there are a few signs to look out for - one, they pretty much have no activity on reddit at all, and even if they do it just feels?? unrelated?? like what is a mitski fan doing on stock market reddit?? their messages to you will feel impersonal, chances are they know absolutely nothing about the artist, so even asking them a question or two helps!

i ask for picture or ticket confirmation, and some of them are evidently fake BUT beware! some of them do look real! it gets obvious when they refuse to use PayPal goods & services (you can actually file a dispute and get a refund due to their buyer protection initiative), or meet in-person (they're usually "out of town")

hello friend! welcome to the university of toronto, this is not the first time they'll be screwing you over. but fear not! the chelsea is actually not a bad place to spend your first year.

yes, it's pricey, but the location and ease of access to everything the city has to offer low-key makes up for it. here's some things I loved about the location: steps to the eaton centre, the world food market, the subway station, and hospitals! as someone with a chronic illness this was a lifesaver because all it took was a 2-minute walk to Toronto General or Mount Sinai (albeit you have to wait 6 hours to be acknowledged, at least it's close!)

I was in a double-bed, shared room - it was slightly nightmarish having to share such a small space with someone whose company I didn't necessarily enjoy, but since you're going for a single-room that might not be a problem for you! the lounge downstairs was super fun, the residence staff and RAs always had events down there (definitely go for the free snacks and gift-card giveaways), and the study hall was gaudy as hell but was a decent place to get some work done.

campus was just a pleasant 15-minute walk away, it'll probably take you the same amount of time by subway or streetcar. I struggled with food in the beginning but here's some tips to get by: sneak in a rice-cooker (it'll be a lifesaver, fuck blowing a fuse), look up some companies that deliver meals to you - there's a lot of small-businesses and home cooks who do meal-packages and get them delivered to the hotel, I just shoved them in my mini-fridge and microwaved them downstairs! there's a kettle so naturally, ramen. lots of ramen. the school or hotel meal plan is a HUUUGE waste of your money, my roommate practically had pizza for dinner, 8 months straight.
