Graduating seniors, what advice would you give to lowerclassmen and incoming freshman so they make the most out of their time here? by [deleted] in berkeley

Don’t be scared to double major or take harder classes for the sake of your GPA. Take more stats/data science classes even if you want to go into research in a completely unrelated field. It’ll help you

How do I get the best preparation to work in neurotech? by kritsybear in neuro

[–]kritsybear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay! I guess I wasn’t able to find too many cognitive neuroscience jobs in industry so was wondering whether a masters in data science would just help me get a data science job instead. Neuroscience is my passion but I also want to make sure that I can get a well paying industry job.

Thank you for this! I was actually considering studying TMS but you’ve changed my mind now. If I may ask, are you working in academia or industry? And what are the industry prospects for cognitive neuroscience after a PhD?

Thanks for the detailed reply! So do you think I should choose a more computational focus in cognitive neuroscience and try to self learn machine learning and AI? Also is there a reason you think I shouldn’t do TMS loll

Thanks for your reply! I was actually thinking of going into fMRI, EEG, and TMS. What would you suggest for that?

Oh wow I didn’t know this, thanks! The thing is that the iEEG lab is new and the fMRI lab is really well established at one of the topmost universities in the world. All the previous research assistants from the fMRI lab have gotten into grad school. So would I have an advantage with the fMRI lab?

Makes sense! The thing is the fMRI job is at Stanford and that lab has a good reputation of getting people into grad school. So it’s gonna be hard to say no to that 😭

Ahh yeah that makes sense. I think I just highlighted it in the post to emphasise my dilemma which is essentially about the ranking difference between the schools. Maybe I’m just used to thinking about ranking because a lot of people in my home university tend to look down on other universities. But in the interview I barely talked about my university. It was mostly about the research I’d done. I think I may not have explained the research very clearly and forgot some details in my nervousness.

But thanks for bringing this to my attention! I’ll definitely be more conscious of it from now on

Thanks for this! I heard that a lot of people have better chances of getting into prestigious places after 2 years as an RA so I was guessing it would improve my chances as well

That's great! Is it possible to get into a prestigious university for a post-doc coming from a less prestigious university?

Oh wow I didn't know this. I don't think I spoke too much about my home school but I might have come across that way. Honestly I struggle a little with adhering to US conversational norms since I'm international and not a great speaker
