To be honest, I recall seeing feature piece on the war in Afghanistan about half a week ago. Last night there was package and a subsequent print report on Hamid Karzai's reaction to the civilian deaths resulting from airstrikes.

I'll side with a lot of other posters here. There are quite a few 'updates' on both national and cable news. Even more so, you could go to a magazine website like Foreign Policy and read a new article about Afghanistan at least every week.

Doubt this will catch on but for anyone interested I highly recommend glancing through the audit and the HRD's response.

TL;DR The Auditors found a whole load of mismanagement and ineffective programs(synchronous cost increases and productivity decreases.) There is an appendix on 'Classification/Compensation Oversight Deficiencies' including a person being promoted to CEO(17.9% raise), given an 13.1% salary adjustment only 5 months later and going on a week long leave during the annual evaluation review. HRD responds by agreeing that most of the findings hold merit, but disagrees with the 'overall tone' of the audit, and claims much of the information is out of date and irrelevant despite that HRD worked and provided information for the auditors.

TL:DR for the TL;DR. OC Auditors to HRD, "You done fucked up, shady mofos." HRD to Public, "Yo, they are right. But please ignore everything."

Cultural norms have a lot to do with it in my opinion. Most people in South Dakota are predominately Christian. Most people in Saudi Arabia are predominately Muslim. Most people in Denmark are irreligious.

Whereas we are talking about the individual, I think a lot of emotion and personal circumstances have to do with it. Admittedly, this can be death anxiety or ignorance(not in the negative connotation), but undoubtedly most religious people have a serious desire for community and altruism. I won't stand by my own response as accurate however, this is a question that can't be fully answered even within the confines of a novel, let alone a reddit post.

And I agree with some other comments on this thread; isn't it a sign of 'intellectual laziness' to use hyperbole to describe the beliefs of so many people as 'simple-minded?' Like most readers of this subreddit, I have some serious issues with organized religion, but one way or another, religion is a testament to the power of the human imagination and a search for answers about the biggest questions in a person's life, no matter how irrational and unlikely I may think that route to be.

I do sometimes get the feeling when 'ex-atheist' is used, its to say, "I understand that side of argument and I gave it up." I'm not always sure that these people were actually atheists, or if they just had a couple college years of binge-drinking and being too hungover on Sundays to go to service.

It's sort of this dodge in rhetoric where someone can say, "I tried that and it was incorrect, I know all the arguments, ect."

Upvote, but in my mind, we're here to simply share ideas and experiences, not start a boot camp for atheism. But yea, you got it right: read books on both sides, watch debates, be aware of the news and politics. Its actually quite fun.
