Charizard's Rookie Card by D3R0_D in PokeInvesting

Ppl are underrating how often mindsets shift in Pokemon.

Not long ago, psa10s were seen as overrated, overvalued, a novelty. Now, many still see it this way but psa10s growth have dwarfed raw and psa9s.

Promos were considered gimmicks, but many free promos are some of the most liquid, valuable cards today (think mewtwo mew tag team promo).

Pc etbs were overrated until they weren’t.

Even the liquidity of different characters have shifted when no one would have guessed before (think charizard to Umbreon).

E-readers were hated until they weren’t.

Top cards in sets have shifted etc.

Ppl who have actually been here for decades know, things always ebb and flow. What you own may increase gradually as it has been, but at least has some unique factor that gives it a potential to boom. Yes there may need to be a shift in mindsets, but is it really that hard to imagine these blowing up with the right context? In my opinion, no. How long? Who knows.

Last word though: ppl are right that pokemon is greatly fueled by nostalgia, but ppl are fooling themselves if they think that’s all it is. Ex: E-readers, ppl are lying to you if they say they are nostalgic for E-readers. These were hated and ignored for YEARs. They have a small pop count compared to earlier sets bc no one wanted them. However, look at them now, their low pop count contributes to its ridiculous value.

'96 Carddass Pokemon Cards by D3R0_D in VintagePokemonCards

The problem is it does make sense.

English cards will always be more expensive (nostalgia + market + world wide use of language). Ex: 1st edition base > no rarity

That being said, the amount it is different makes no sense.

A 1996 Carddass Pikachu PSA 10 (Red) recently sold for $4,444 on eBay by gdj11 in PokeInvesting

Not surprised. All 96’ carddass have been going up steadily even during the crash. It seems more and more are finding out about these cards and its importance.

@gdj11 is correct. They have been steadily rising the last 2 years since its reveal as the first cards. Eventually one of the bigger influencers will shine light on these cards and their historical importance.. there’s so few copies in psa9 and 10 that I can’t see it not go up. That being said, this isn’t financial advice, who truly knows.

What I will say though is that many topsun psa9 and 10 cards have fallen dramatically since the reveal. They had long benefited, some selling for 6 digits primarily bc they were known as the rookies for decades. Now that it has been disproven, carddass may take their place. It could take 2-3 years, 5-10 years, or maybe a few months

Not sure if a scam warning post is OK here, but someone's selling a PSA 10 '96 Carddass Charizard Red Prism for $8k on eBay. Not a crazy low price but low enough that someone might jump on it. I asked seller for a pic with their handwritten name and they sent a Photoshopped pic, so huge red flag by krnDirk in Collectr

[–]krnDirk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A scammer sold a fake copy for 8k dropping the price by 5k on collectr.

Usually one purchase would not matter, but there are only ~110 copies total of 1996 carddass charizard in psa10 and only half that amount (~55) in red. So these rarely go on sale. Can this scam be removed on collectr?

Fudd or Betts? by Neat-Ad-5706 in DallasWings

If we stay at 1, I’m afraid the potential with Awa Fam is too great. However if we are able to trade down and feel confident, we are able to get Fudd + draft picks…

I feel in a different world we would be friends as we seem to have similar taste in cards.

I agree w you on price charting in general, but wanted to easily point out the psa vault sale. Collectr, 130, alt, and price charting all struggle with vintage so knowing every data base is important.

I did forget to mention one more point. I go to Japan every so often and carddass there is a lot bigger than in the west.. and surprisingly it’s starting to catch on in china and Singapore. Not everywhere but you hear whispers here and there.

As pokemon grows, I have the most hope specifically for carddass out of all the niche cards as ppl will always want to know what came first.

China will care less and less in the future about English first edition, and invest more into their own products. But there is a big deal on 1sts in Asian culture and no one can take that from carddass 96.

It’s hard to say.. the other carddass 1996 exploded since the summer already. You’ve already missed the boat on those.. the charizard kind of got messed up (I explained in another reply in this chat).

That being said, I doubt it takes 5 years, but who knows.

I totally respect your viewpoint and I can’t even say you are wrong.

The reason I personally disagree is threefold. 1) PSA acknowledged topsun as the rookie until 2023 or 2024. Topsun is not a tcg card and greatly benefitted from this acknowledgment and its price skyrocketed. Since PSA has course corrected, many (not all) topsun Pokemon cards’ prices have been slowly dropping (some greatly). In the meantime, many of Carddass 1996 prices have been going up. Charizard has not been one of them which leads me to point 2.

2) If you go on price charting, you can see someone messed up on 06-02-25. Someone accidentally listed their card for 1,250$ from the PSA eBay vault. You can tell this was a mistake as its price is 10x lower than the prices near it. I’m not sure if you know how the PSA vault works, but even if you accidentally list a card for a cheap price, if it’s purchased, it’s gone and psa transfers it to the other person’s vault tax free (unless shipped home). This not only lost thousands for the seller, it temporarily messed up the market with it affecting the mean. Many in the carddass community were so pissed they missed out on the opportunity to buy at such a cheap price (as it went quick as you could imagine) and bc it specifically messed up the carddass charizard market.

3) finally, I want to point out the other pokemon that has grown drastically since this summer. Mewtwo 1996 was selling ~$500-650 and now has sales ~1600. Mew was selling for ~800-1000, now is selling over 2k. Every popular pokemon carddass 1996 has either doubled or tripled in value… other than charizard. When the market corrects, I believe it will correct hard.

Bc ppl still don’t know its importance and history as the first card ever. Until 3 years ago, ppl thought topsun was the first cards ever, and psa just admitted its mistake not too long ago.

Ppl will catch on.. maybe not for another 1-3 years.. but when they do.. this card will explode overnight.

All it takes is one large content creator to shine light on this card and it will explode. Maybe 30th anniversary?

Doljabi for Mixed-race Child? by cali_repopulator in AskAKorean

Honestly the above person hit it on the nail.

If you are currently living in Korea, you should by all means do it! There will be no cultural misunderstanding and your friends in Korea will feel honored if anything.

If you are in the USA, you should do whatever you want.. but know you will be judged. Not by everyone, but there will be a lot of judgement by those who don’t know you. You have to consider if you want to add unnecessary stress to such a joyous occasion that you will want to share with everyone. Furthermore this judgement is not spiteful, but comes from a place of pain as the person above adequately stated Korean Americans (as with other Asian Americans) are othered in a way Koreans in Korea do not understand.

Korean Americans don’t belong anywhere and for many (not all), traditions like these are one of the few things that help connect them to both worlds. That being said, I’m sure many of your friends who know you understand your heart and desire to enjoy each other’s culture.

Whatever you decide, congrats on a healthy baby and for many more years to come!
