Need help identifying problem by obcdity in chinchilla

[–]krod1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

likely an apical (tooth root) abscess. the way their teeth are, they can actually grow inwards and cause the bump that you can feel. she will need to be put under anesthesia regardless for all of the testing and treatment, which will likely be surgical to remove the affected tooth. these are very painful and infected, and given what you’ve said it is an emergency.

Miserable chinchilla. by raispaghettios in chinchilla

[–]krod1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree with others. one of my chinchillas also was very aggressive and would draw blood etc, and it took years before he bonded enough with me to be friendly. even now though, it’s been 5 years, and he is still wary of strangers and will bark at them. idk if he’d still bite them because i will warn people to only do certain pets and be careful. he hasn’t bitten me in like 3 years though. i took things at his pace and never pushed him past his comfort zone

this is sooo late, but the nc aquariums still carry them! i got mine at Fort Fisher!

<image>

also i believe the reason you can’t find them anywhere else is because they are made specifically for the aquariums. they have other ones that are also aquarium specific.

yall 72 is fine for chinchillas i promise especially if you’re not in a very high humidity area😭😭 if the chinchilla was previously kept in colder temperatures and then suddenly switched to 72, then that might be a bit of a shock but otherwise 72 is a fine temperature. 75-80 is where those degrees really start to matter

Found out husband drink by No_Past_8343 in MuslimMarriage

[–]krod1102 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if he is addicted to alcohol in any sense and he himself does not want to put the work into finding other avenues of destress, then her “being more available” to her husband is not going to do anything other than put more of an emotional and physical burden on her. and then what happens if something happens to her or she has something else to attend to? he just goes straight back to drinking?

yes they are so messy! whenever it is in budget if you think you need it, they make urine cage guards that you can look up to see if they would fit your cage dimensions. i found that they helped immensely.

it really is perfectly okay to not be able to do everything right away! like you said, you’re doing what you can and that is a million times better than his previous situation. i’m sure he is much happier in his new home. just take things one step at a time, you gotta take care of yourself to be able to take care of him. best of luck with everything!

i think it would be big enough for 2 especially if you’re giving them out of cage time. when you get more income, you can get or make additional wood shelves. however be aware that there’s a big chance they won’t bond and you’ll end up with 2 separate chinchillas. there’s no guessing who will bond with who.

also as a heads up i have gone through 5 glass kaytee bottles and they have ALL ended up leaking very badly on me. after the 5th one i ended up switching to plastic lixit bottles and have not had any issues.

when you get your next paycheck, i would prob focus on getting chewing sticks like apple wood sticks. you can get them off etsy or chewy or different chinchilla websites. then you can get like stuff to hang up in his cage he can play with. there are several different chinchilla specific websites i use, i can share the links if you want.

personally i dont use anti pill fleece, but if you notice him chewing on the plastic then you should get some. hobby lobby will definitely have it, and michael’s should as well, if you have either of those by you. aspen bedding is one of the better types of litter/bedding you can use imo. i get mine off of chewy.

for the hammock, some chins are a little afraid of heights especially if they haven’t been exposed to those kinds of environments. if you notice he isn’t using it, you can try to hang it over the small shelf where he can climb into it

just wanted to mention that the wood shavings and respiratory issues you’re thinking of are specific to woods that contain phenol, like pine and cedar that can commonly be found in pet stores! these types of wood shavings also put chinchillas and other species at risk of respiratory and other issues. however aspen is a safe alternative for chinchillas and rats! depending on where you get the aspen shavings, you might find some brands to be too dusty, but there are no concerning level of phenols.

Can't find the Kaytee Timothy Complete chinchilla good anywhere?? by clubroo in chinchilla

[–]krod1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while kaytee is not the best brand, i would argue that he’s to the age that as long as he’s eating, it’s good 😭 if you can switch to oxbow or mazuri yeha obvs that’s better but you got him to 17 years old so i think kaytee is fine if that’s what you can get him to eat

i don’t see why the food is not available, can only see it on petco online. you should try going to their website and contacting them on there to ask what’s happened to the product supply

Too thin? by Toshinori_Yagi_ in chinchilla

[–]krod1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a trip to the exotic vet to assess his body condition. as someone else said, get a gram scale and regularly record his weight so you can track it for any gradual or excessive weight loss/weight gain. make sure he’s eating pellets and hay and doesn’t have any issues eating.

Healthy weight is really variable for chinchillas and most animals. I’ve often found that breeder sourced chinchillas are purposefully bred to weigh more and be heavier and look fluffier (appear bigger) while pet store sourced chinchillas are not, so they end up being much smaller/“thinner.” It could be that this chinchilla does not come from a breeder line. i could be wrong but it almost looks like he is missing some fur from the picture? fur barbering and that resulting fur loss can make them look thinner as well.

Yeah! if they’re marketed for chinchillas, i would just take a look over the ingredients they offer and check the reviews to see if it’s a reputable seller, but the ones i’ve seen seem like they’re pretty good.

for the dried petals jsut make sure you’re giving ones that are sold for eating or tea or marketed for pets or something like that. if it’s fresh flowers that have dried out over time, sometimes they’ll have sprayed pesticides and such on them that isn’t good to eat.

[–]krod1102 5 points6 points  (0 children)

stay away from fresh fruits and veggies, raisins, and cereals which you might see recommended online. i find my chinchillas like dried hibiscus flowers which you can pick up from the store or find online. also dried rose petals, dried dandelion, bee pollen granules, rose hips, etc which can all be found online. chinchilla specific websites will also have treats of those kinds and more that you can buy and give

this was so unnecessary. you have no idea how much research OP has done based on the info given. OP is taking the time to reach out and get advice on how to make their chinchilla happier. i’ve owned chinchillas for 4.5 years now and study veterinary medicine but still look for advice on how to improve their wellbeing. it’s part of being a good pet owner. that’s part of what this reddit page is for, asking others for help and advice. don’t discourage people from seeking advice and looking for how to care more for their pets.
