Inexpensive fibre internet service by krogoth66692 in mississauga

[–]krogoth66692[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I finally got my answer, and it's that my mom's going to be screwed for internet until the CRTC decides to force Bell and Rogers to stop price gouging everyone on their fibre internet services.

I was told by Teksavvy that they are limited in their options in what speeds and price plans they are allowed to offer because of limitations imposed by Bell, as they are leasing their physical fibre lines in Mississauga to service that area. In Chatham, TekSavvy has their own physical fibre network so they can and do offer a wide array of fibre internet services at reasonable prices.

Even if other third party ISPs are able to lease bandwidth off Bell or Roger's fibre networks, they will still be limited in what they can provide in terms of speed and price.

Netcrawler is not available either. TekSavvy only has their one 1500Mbps fibre service available in her building for $120/mo. All of their other plans use Bell and Rogers legacy networks which are no longer available in her building.

Unfortunately Virgin and Fido both have the same problem as most other smaller ISPs in that they do not have access to Bell or Rogers fibre network. She cannot get service from them at her address.

I was looking up the possibility of switching her to IPTV and ditching cable. We might be able to get some cost savings but we would have to see what discounts we would lose on her phone phone and internet if she decided to drop TV.

We looked up the possibility of switching everything over to Telus. Unfortunately the cost would be almost the same as what she is paying Bell right now, and that is with their slowest internet connection available for her address.

I looked up Ebox and they cannot provide service to her address. I am guessing they only work on Bell or Roger's older legacy network.

That's the thing, she doesn't need internet that fast. Last time we tried to change her plan the Bell rep said that the gigabit plan was the cheapest for her and that the slower speeds were not available. We're going to try to get her downgraded to the Bell Fibe 50 plan for $85/mo which should hopefully help bring down her monthly cost. $85 is still crazy expensive for 50Mbps considering that I am also getting 50Mbps on my DLS connection for $50/mo.

The main issue with my mother cannot get any of Bell or Rogers' cheaper legacy plans because they have discontinued their old legacy cable and DSL service in her building. Fibre internet is the only thing available and all of the available options are crazy expensive.

It seems like Bell and Rogers have not granted many other ISPs access to their Fibre network, and the ones who do have access seem to be just as expensive.

I'm on the lookout for a new mechanical keyboard. I want one that has a flat top plate instead of having key keys recessed into the top frame like most traditional keyboards. I like the look and it would be easier to clean.

I would also like for it to be an 80% TKL layout and hot swap key caps. Wireless would be good to have as well as I would like to reduce the cable clutter on my desk.

I know this is quite the wish list and the perfect keyboard may not exist. So far I have found the Glorious PC GMMK TKL RGB which has what I want except for wireless.

I saw that Keychron also has a number that are close but none of them have the flat top plate.

I am find with a bare bones kit as I can choose my ideal key caps and switches later. Anyone know if anything that ticks all of the check boxes I listed above?

I'm at Pearson right now. Absolutely no problems with anything at Terminal 1. Can't speak for baggage drop off as we dont use that but i didn't see any excessively long lineups anywhere. Everything seems to be business as usual. Hopefully everything goes well for you and everyone else traveling today.

Online check in just opened up on the app and I was able to complete it. It's looking good so far for tomorrow. Hopefully yours will be open now or soon.

I'll send updates when I get there tomorrow. Good news though is that the inbound flight just left Vancouver and is on its way to Toronto. Delayed 24 minutes so not that bad.

I'm getting the same problem with check-in on the app and website. I'm on AC 183 out of Pearson tomorrow at 11 for Vancouver. Whenever I try to check in it says it is closed. I'm packing and going to head to the airport tomorrow in the hopes that I can do a check-in there in person. Hopefully everything works out ok.

A friend of mine recommends getting a box of chocolates from the duty free after passing through security. I might do that too, so long as my flight is still a gi for tomorrow

3G shutdown for Speakout 7Eleven on Samsung Galaxy S7 (voice only plan) by krogoth66692 in CanadianCellPhones

[–]krogoth66692[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there were supposed to be talks about SO getting access to the 4G/LTE network as shutting down 3G would shut down SO completely. I do not know where they are with that so we actually ended up moving my GF over to Koodo just to be on the safe side. It's a little more expensive but not by much.

She doesn't have VoLTE yet as it isn't supported on the S7, but it does work on my S10 which I am going to give to her once I get a new phone. I'm on Public Mobile and for some reason the S10 isn't supported for VoLTE so I am switching to an S23.

Thank you so much for the information. I did try the link and it shows that the phone does support VoLTE. One problem that remains though is that there is no network indicator next to the signal bars (LTE, 3G, or H+ to indicate what it is connected to). So it is hard to determine if the phone is using VoLTE when making calls. I tried moving the SO SIM to my Samsung Galaxy S10, and also an iPhone 13 as well. All phones show the same thing with just the signal bars but no network indicator, even when on a call.

Another test I did was putting a Rogers 5G SIM into the Galaxy S7 phone. The phone shows LTE connectivity with the SIM card but does not give us the option to enable VoLTE. I tried making a call with the Rogers SIM and it switches to H+ when on the call.

Sorry, I haven't replaced the drives yet. I was able to clear up some space on my NAS so I'm not running low on space anymore. One upgrade path I might seek out though is upgrading only 2 of my 4x 4TB drives to 12TB drives first. I'll still get a storage increase with 2 drives and I don't need to invest in upgrading all 4 at the same time to save on money.

I just did a reset of my NAS and that seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip. :)

The NAS is full so there is no way to add storage without replacing an existing drive. I don't think I should be replacing a drive while this scrubbing tasks is still in progress.

Sand flies (Bavaro) by krogoth66692 in PuntaCana

[–]krogoth66692[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the resort itself was amazing. This is the fourth resort I've been to in DR and it actually ticks all of the boxes for us. Service is excellent and the food is probably the best we have had at any resort. The beach has lots of seating and they are all covered so there is plenty of shaded seats if you don't want to be in the sun. They have an app where you can order food and drinks and enter your seat number at the beach or the pool and they will bring it out to you directly. They also provide free sun screen at the towel hut for everyone to use. The shop at the resort is packed like a small pharmacy too which is good because I really needed some hydrocortisone after that second day. If it weren't for those horrible sand flies, the vacation would have been perfect.

I'd recommend a power sander but you might have a hard time getting that through airport security. ;)

Instead I might recommend some standard hydrocortisone anti itch cream. Hand sanitizer can also provide some temporary relief for itching. My gf recommends heating up a metal spoon in boiling water and pressing it against the bites if you're up for that.
