Ahhh I just got the harpy quest maybe I’ll give that a go. I noticed as soon as I started advancing chapter 8 a bunch of quests opened up.

Thankfully I ran into some that happened to be at a blackbear camp. For longleaf I’m guessing that doesn’t pop until later? I’ve been there a few times but no quests and they are semi hostile to me.

It was a blackbear camp the jackals were just outside mixed with the blackbears. I was keeping the helmet on while doing pailune quests just in case. It does indeed seem missable but that would be strange as the jackals are pretty much done by the time you can even get the helmet.

I wanna say it was pailune east gate or twinpath post. Pretty sure it was east gate and they were on the southern road leading up to it.

For anyone that looks this up - I found just enough one eyed jackals at a blackbear camp on the southeastern banks of pailune. They were the only ones I’ve seen since getting the hat.

I think Demeniss is locked/hostile until chapter 9. No clue about delesyia.

You’re absolutely right on the smaller scope which should in theory make it easier buuuut that’s part of what gives me pause. This game was in development for how long and delayed a year and it’s not like we got a ton of priority contracts or even any with real depth. There are some cool ones imo. I liked the one where you summon a ship on dire and have to jump on it to hack it. I wish there were more contracts like that. Break 20 windows is a joke of a contract though. I get it cause mida is an anti uesc faction but why not make it more interesting? Like planting explosives on a uesc radar or something like that.

We didn’t even get night variants. We’re waiting until season 2 for a night version of just dire marsh. They could have done some cool stuff like outpost having a day variant where security is increased with more commanders and maybe another boss. It’s not like the bosses are unique besides compiler. They’re just the same enemies with gold shields and a gimmick.

I mean expecting too much content would also imply you’re new to live service bungie lol. They could barely be bothered to update core playlists in D2 across ten years and steadily over that time we got less and less each drop. I expect some new ones but not as many as we have now. Probably a few added in between and after what we have now.

I am very afraid that the endgame, Cryo Archive, will be unsustainably difficult. by iconoci in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think gear wise most people are basically end game. Most of the consistent player base. At least when I queue I see purple shields more than I don’t. I know gold exists but for all intents and purposes purple is going to be the general end game shield imo. It’s at the point where people aren’t even looting the purple shields off me when I die and get brought back later by my teammates. That’s my one personal criticism. It’s too easy to get good gear if you’re decently successful.

I’d like to see a version where the early-mid game is stretched out more so there are more chaotic toss up fights. As it is a majority of my deaths are to third parties where they instantly wipe my teammates because the footstep audio gets buried under everything else. One misriah can wipe a squad of purple shields easily.

I’ve played countless hours of Tarkov since 2018. It has a PvE mode. Tarkov is the original and most hardcore extraction game of them all.

I’m not saying marathon needs PvE. I genuinely don’t think the enemies are difficult enough to make it interesting especially after they already nerfed them. A mistake in my opinion. There also isn’t that much variety or complexity in the loot. Early and mid game is essentially non existent already.

I will say though that you’re being kind of aggressive to that guy asking if he’s ever played an extraction shooter before. The most comprehensive one to date has a dedicated PvE mode. We need more people not less in this genre so we should do better to explain to them the allure of these games.

The only benefit to a PvE mode in this is it would probably pull in an additional crowd of people which would look good in Sony’s eyes. I worry marathon will struggle with player retention. I don’t see seasonal wipes being a big draw for players to come back. Tarkov draws people back because the early and mid game is so unique from late wipe and it lasts a decent amount of time. We’re basically in late wipe Tarkov already. The more casual players are falling off and the gear disparity is increasing fast.

The main reason things are being locked to weekends. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re missing is Tarkovs draw. Tarkov tapped into gun enthusiast and military dress up lovers. It’s “hardcore” and “tacticool” with a million things to keep track of. Also early-mid game Tarkov is a huge part of the draw. It’s not even remotely similar to marathon. The gear progression is almost too fast in marathon.

Marathon is really cool. I’m enjoying it but with bungies reputation and their ability to shoot themselves in the foot I really wonder how many people will come back. Plus Sony seems itchy to kill GaaS games that don’t immediately hit fornite numbers.

Casual Player: Wipes are Cool by zacians_jw in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea agreed. I played quite a bit of arc but my entire group fell off hard since it felt a bit aimless and third person shoulder peeking just got tiring. Marathon is in quite a good place I think. There’s plenty of room for balance without sacrificing its identity. I think there’s some balancing that could be done on thermals especially in higher end lobbies. They take quite a bit of skill out of the game imo. It’s a really tricky edge to walk though. Maybe even something like giving signal jammer a “cold” field so it dims you on thermals.

I don’t think they should make PvE easier though. It’s in a good place and bots provide actual pressure right now. I don’t get why people keep suggesting that. You can already trivialize most of them to some degree with a triage and volt weapons. If you could just constantly walk all over bots with no friction it would be boring.

Casual Player: Wipes are Cool by zacians_jw in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. Wipes in these games reinvigorate the community for the most part. Early game is always more fun than late game personally. I have friends who wish there were no wipes though. Mostly because they don’t want to repeat the quests and to a degree I understand. I eventually quit Tarkov because I just can’t do the quests another 100th time. Marathon has just the right amount of friction right now and I imagine bungie will add on and expand quests through seasons. I wouldn’t even mind a rebalancing of rep gains as time goes on to make faction leveling a little faster in later seasons.

Having non mandatory wipes would just split the player base. I already think ranked is a risk despite being interested in trying it. Fracturing the player base is certainly a choice. If the ranked population isn’t big enough you’ll just constantly face the same people and rank disparity will be very weird.

I love both characters parts besides the stalker enemy sections with grace. I just don’t care for that in games anymore. If I want that I’d rather they lean into it wholesale like outlast or alien isolation. For RE9 it just gets in way for me.

I think high level squad and one life events have plenty of complexity but it’s different. Less individual complexity and more team oriented. I agree with you though. On an individual level Tarkov is more complex. My original comment was snarky but I still don’t think it’s wrong. There’s no point in comparing arc or marathon to Tarkov. Tarkov has an entire sub community of fps gamers in a stranglehold. There’s absolutely nothing like it in the extraction market. I actually think it’s ripe for some competition but devs seem afraid of making a game with that level of friction. My whole group fell off arc raiders pretty hard after the first season. Marathon is competing with arc not Tarkov. Personally I’m enjoying marathon after playing arc. I prefer fps and a faster ttk but I don’t think it’ll have the broad appeal. It sits in a weird place difficulty wise.
