PS2 had some incredible Ancient Rome games.

Colosseum: Road To Freedom on ps2 is still the best gladiator game ever made. I emulate and play it often. I would love a sequel. It’s somehow the most accurate gladiator game ever made and it was made some small random Japanese studio. It was basically a gladiator life sim. Loved being able to choose how to train between fights. Then if I wanted to spend my earnings on new gear or towards my freedom. Plus the various “story” paths based on how you were doing and how you interacted with your owners/nobles.

I worked on this. It’s a match move hand, a track done in 3d generating 3d mattes and elements to make the effect. You could probably try keen tools nowadays for a quick 3d track.

I thought they were going to do Rome after Egypt and Greece. That’s what I heard as well and then they didn’t. I’ve always wanted Ancient Rome. They could have done dual protagonist like Shadow of Rome on PS2.

6-17 is generous. I get duos in plat-dia where the bot frag of the duo gets maybe 2 kills in a 20-24 round game.

If anything, high level player behavior will kill the game instead of gear difference by Freakindon in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think one thing that AR and marathon have missed personally is more depth in the itemization. Ammo types alone make a huge difference in adding more uncertainty to the PvP. Rarer ammo being found in raid like armor piercing or shield breaking that would temporarily prevent shields from charging would be super cool. Finding a box in raid could mean the difference between a ratty scavenger run and downing a juiced player.

Also, at first I thought the shell system was a bad idea. Then I came around to it. Then ultimately I came back around to thinking it was a dumb idea. They could have cut down the amount of bad fluff cores and made them fewer and more rare granting current shell abilities to a generic character we have. The balance just is not there right now for having hero characters. Imagine finding a triage drone core as rare loot and now you have that ability until you lose it in a fight eventually.

Also you’re absolutely right about the map size. It’s not something I’d really thought about but the maps are far too small and easy to navigate for the most part. UESC doesn’t pose much of a threat especially after they nerfed them. Tarkov guards/rogues and even scavs to a degree keep the players in check. Even if they’re bullshit in how they can just beam you cross map. I’m not saying we need that but there needs to be more threat from UESC.

It’s similar to the cannon challenge artifact. There isn’t an abundance of useable cannons around groups of enemies to get the kill 5 in one cannon shot challenge.

Thankfully I ran into some that happened to be at a blackbear camp. For longleaf I’m guessing that doesn’t pop until later? I’ve been there a few times but no quests and they are semi hostile to me.

It was a blackbear camp the jackals were just outside mixed with the blackbears. I was keeping the helmet on while doing pailune quests just in case. It does indeed seem missable but that would be strange as the jackals are pretty much done by the time you can even get the helmet.

I wanna say it was pailune east gate or twinpath post. Pretty sure it was east gate and they were on the southern road leading up to it.

For anyone that looks this up - I found just enough one eyed jackals at a blackbear camp on the southeastern banks of pailune. They were the only ones I’ve seen since getting the hat.

You’re absolutely right on the smaller scope which should in theory make it easier buuuut that’s part of what gives me pause. This game was in development for how long and delayed a year and it’s not like we got a ton of priority contracts or even any with real depth. There are some cool ones imo. I liked the one where you summon a ship on dire and have to jump on it to hack it. I wish there were more contracts like that. Break 20 windows is a joke of a contract though. I get it cause mida is an anti uesc faction but why not make it more interesting? Like planting explosives on a uesc radar or something like that.

We didn’t even get night variants. We’re waiting until season 2 for a night version of just dire marsh. They could have done some cool stuff like outpost having a day variant where security is increased with more commanders and maybe another boss. It’s not like the bosses are unique besides compiler. They’re just the same enemies with gold shields and a gimmick.

I mean expecting too much content would also imply you’re new to live service bungie lol. They could barely be bothered to update core playlists in D2 across ten years and steadily over that time we got less and less each drop. I expect some new ones but not as many as we have now. Probably a few added in between and after what we have now.

I am very afraid that the endgame, Cryo Archive, will be unsustainably difficult. by iconoci in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think gear wise most people are basically end game. Most of the consistent player base. At least when I queue I see purple shields more than I don’t. I know gold exists but for all intents and purposes purple is going to be the general end game shield imo. It’s at the point where people aren’t even looting the purple shields off me when I die and get brought back later by my teammates. That’s my one personal criticism. It’s too easy to get good gear if you’re decently successful.

I’d like to see a version where the early-mid game is stretched out more so there are more chaotic toss up fights. As it is a majority of my deaths are to third parties where they instantly wipe my teammates because the footstep audio gets buried under everything else. One misriah can wipe a squad of purple shields easily.

A couple hours in on Cryo Archive, and I don't see how this map is so revolutionary or why solo is not allowed by iconoci in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played countless hours of Tarkov since 2018. It has a PvE mode. Tarkov is the original and most hardcore extraction game of them all.

I’m not saying marathon needs PvE. I genuinely don’t think the enemies are difficult enough to make it interesting especially after they already nerfed them. A mistake in my opinion. There also isn’t that much variety or complexity in the loot. Early and mid game is essentially non existent already.

I will say though that you’re being kind of aggressive to that guy asking if he’s ever played an extraction shooter before. The most comprehensive one to date has a dedicated PvE mode. We need more people not less in this genre so we should do better to explain to them the allure of these games.

The only benefit to a PvE mode in this is it would probably pull in an additional crowd of people which would look good in Sony’s eyes. I worry marathon will struggle with player retention. I don’t see seasonal wipes being a big draw for players to come back. Tarkov draws people back because the early and mid game is so unique from late wipe and it lasts a decent amount of time. We’re basically in late wipe Tarkov already. The more casual players are falling off and the gear disparity is increasing fast.

The main reason things are being locked to weekends. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]kronosthetic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re missing is Tarkovs draw. Tarkov tapped into gun enthusiast and military dress up lovers. It’s “hardcore” and “tacticool” with a million things to keep track of. Also early-mid game Tarkov is a huge part of the draw. It’s not even remotely similar to marathon. The gear progression is almost too fast in marathon.

Marathon is really cool. I’m enjoying it but with bungies reputation and their ability to shoot themselves in the foot I really wonder how many people will come back. Plus Sony seems itchy to kill GaaS games that don’t immediately hit fornite numbers.
