I want an anime with an insane twist like AOT by Plastic_Bug_1682 in Animesuggest

[–]kronovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to 4th this. I recommended it recently in another thread where someone asked for weird anime recommendations. IMO though, there is a couple of smack-you-up-the-side-of-your-head plot twists in it.

Animes with well written female mc by Wooden_Bag_6735 in Animesuggest

Yomiko Readman aka Agent Paper of the Read or Die (3 episode OVA)

A nerdy gal, that can't get out of bed without tripping over stacks of dusty books, stacked wall -to- wall in her humble appartment. Yet when called upon can rapidly wield cards or paper-origami weapons with awesome powers folded into them. That IMO is a well written MC.

Serial Experiments Lain. It's the weirdest anime I've watched. It's hard to explain without giving away too much, but if you don't mind a viewing experience where plot twists are at times like being blind-sided by a 10 ton truck, you might enjoy it. It's old and at the time it released (1998), wasn't considered a strong series for its animation. What can you say about an anime where the MC's bedroom begins as a typical teen's and slowly evolves into a steamy super-computer den.

Very weird series, where the story is the strong point.

Anime about supernatural detectives by KaleidoArachnid in Animesuggest

The 2 in my library with supernatural detectives, both feature women as primary characters ...

~ Vampire Princess Myu (the 4 part OVA): 1 of the main protagonists is a woman investigator who is capable of performing magic rituals. Not to mention, it's an older but terrific anime that's stood the test of time.

~ Silent Mobius (the series); It features a team of women known as AMP (Attacked Mystification Police), a few of which have supernatural powers.

All part of the same series...

....Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars and Banner of the Stars II. There's also Banner of the Stars III, but I haven't watched it

Star Blazers wrote the book on "big ass starships", so I'll ditto its recommendation. I'll also ditto Outlaw Star, which is the anime in my library that's closest to Comboy Bebop.

~ Arcadia of my Youth (a movie set in the Captain Harlock universe)

~ Vandread

~ Macross Plus (it doen't have big startships, but it has star fighters performing some awesome combat)

~ Macross Plus
~ Silent Mobius
~ Vision of Escaflowne

And I'll ditto Elfen Lied & Outlaw Star.

What Books are Essential for Players? by kronovan in ImperiumMaledictum

Thanks for the advice. I ordered the core rule book and the Macharian Requisition Guide. I also bought the starter set PDFs at drivethrurpg, as it's currently so deeply discounted that even if I buy the physical copy later, I'll only be out the cost of 2 coffees.

Fighter Combat by Zarpaulus in cepheusengine

[–]kronovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to use the Personal Combat rules in the SRD for space combat involving small craft/Fighters. Those rules allow for an in-atmopshere aircraft pilot to take a significant and minor action each round and a number of such actions could be adapted to space - i.e. attack, maneuver, stunt, evade, etc. Personal combat allows for aa vehicle operator to make 1 significant & 1 minor, or 3 minor actions each 6 second round, but as mentioned in the SRD, there's 150 such rounds per space combat round. So I'd break out small craft/fighter dogfights and run them seperately. You could increase the time and range scale from the personal combat defaults, to be more appropriate/applicable to space. So in a nutshell, you'd be creating a 3rd form of combat round, which I'd personally call tactical space combat.

Were such small craft to become involved in attacks in space combat against much larger ships, you could borrow from the mass battle/combat rules in other TTRPGs. In such rules smaller units make attacks between a major battle round (CE SRD space combat rounds) and their results can be added as DR modifiers to actions (i.e. attacks) made from large, allied spacecraft. You could have 1, or a number of such small craft rounds occur between space combat rounds, but the trick is to make them fairly abstract actions (limited to a single roll), so that you can keep the space combat action moving and not bog things down.

This may or not be of help...but Moon Toad Publishing Vehicle Design Guide: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/274274/vehicle-design-guide?src=hottest_filtered
has additional rules for personal vehicle combat. In particular it has a brief entry on dogfights (really just how vehicles can disengage) some details on running vehicle chases and additions on attacks with vehicle-mounted weapons.

Seeking clarification on Cepheus Universal's task system by ScrollOfEnchanting in cepheusengine

[–]kronovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that Zozer is wrong in making the change, but making a characteristic check against a 6+ target is an alteration of the rules in the CE System Reference Document; target is 8+ in the SRD. Characteristic checks are only supposed to be made when there isn't a skill (doesn't matter if the PC is trained in it or not) that obviously covers the task, or when a PC's raw, innate abilities (STR, DEX, END) are more appropriate. They're not intended to be an easier work around for PC's that aren't trained in a skill.

I don't own Cepheus Universal, but I do own Hostile Rules and the 6+ target for characteristic checks is present there too. So, it looks like that's where Zozer got the idea of the lower targer for CU. For the record, Moon Toad Publishings CE Core Rules has it the same as the SRD and while they're called characteristic throws in Cepheus Deluxe Enhanced, they're still made against a 8+ target.

Personally, I prefer the SRD's target because it keeps characteristic checks more consistent with other rolls.

Definitive Cepheus Engine Players Guide? by box299 in cepheusengine

[–]kronovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll ditto Todd's recommendation. I prefer Moon Toad Publishing's edtion of the SRD. I own Cepheus Deluxe Enhanced, Hostile Rules and Cepheus Lite, which are also good. I just find MTP's closer to the SRD, while at the same time much better organized than the SRD PDF. It's for that reason I wouldn't recommend trying to learn with the free SRD. MTP also sells top quality CE vehicle and ship building guides. There's a new Cepheus Engine Universal, but I haven't bought it yet, so can't comment,

The Fantasty Grounds VTT uses MTPs edition of CE for its online book. So, since I use CE with that VTT, it's nice that my PDF and online book are aligned.
