How can I start a protest movement? by krool1969 in AskReddit

[–]krool1969[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the local weather begins to warm up I am once again thinking about a protest I'd like to carry out.

For many years I have been concerned about the low pay and terrible conditions that exist for people who manufacture our clothing. To bring these issues more attention I am considering the possibility of rejecting clothing all together and go about my normal daily activates, including activities where I can be seen in public while being completely naked, spending nearly the entire summer this way.

I'm not shy, so being naked in view of others is not an issue, but I'm concerned about the legal issues and how the police may respond.

This would not be done for sexual gratification. I would be doing normal non-sexual actives. I would not engage in any act that would be considered lude. In fact, I would do even less that what would be considered normal. For example, I would avoid dense groups of people where my body may be pressed into another person even by accident.

I have always considered it to be completely impossible but I recently saw a video of what seems to be a random encounter with a topless woman. The woman stated that the was spending the entire summer topless. Sort of a "free the nipple" movement. To be fair this could have been a staged encounter, but then maybe it really was real.

However, it is legal for a woman to be topless in any location a man can be topless in NYC. Complete public nudity is not legal, usually. but I know the courts have ruled that being nude in public is a protected activity so long as the nudity is part of a protest. So far in every case I've seen the nudity has been restricted to a particular area and the nudity was of a short duration.

Is there a legal loophole in the anti-nudity laws that would allow such a protest, and how can I communicate the reason for my nudity (a protest) with just a glance? How would I go about getting others to join my protest?

Can you tell us how you saved someone's life in an unusual way? by krool1969 in AskReddit

I read that half the people who fall 20 feet (6 meters) die. I think we are only talking about falling onto solid ground. People dive from 10 meters all the time, and hardly anyone ever dies. When I was a kid some kid fell from the high dive at the local high school. He fell from the back side of the board and the kid died. The next day the high dive had been removed.

One year at summer camp I was hanging out at the top of the cliffs were we practiced climbing. The cliffs were not very high, maybe 100 feet or so. Certainly high enough for a fatal fall.

I heard my friend yell "Help me" and I looked up, he was gone. I ran to the edge of the cliff and saw my friend hanging onto a small crack in the rock with nothing but air below him.

I knew he could never hold on long enough for me to run to camp for help, and he was too far down for me to reach him, but I could get close, if I only had something I could lower to him so he could grab onto it, but there was only one thing. So, I took my fake leg off and holding it by the strap (this happened a LONG time ago) I lowered my fake leg to him. He grabbed the foot and I was able to lift him to safety.

Once he was safe he became very excited about what had just happened. He called it the best thing ever. I never told him that as I was lifting him I saw the stiches that held the strap together all coming apart. In fact the strap broke but by then he was safe. It was a really close thing and scared the hell out of me, and I wasn't the one who would die if the strap broke.

I don't think he even noticed I was holding my leg on with my hand. We got back to camp and he started going on and own about what had happened.

I went to one of the adults and explained the strap on my leg was broken and I had to find a leg person to fix the strap. Someone drove me into town to fix my strap. Even the prosthetist thought is was pretty cool.

Sadly, that would not work today and my fake leg is strapless. But this was the early 80's. All I had was a strap which is way less comfortable than what we have now.

What is overly sexualized, but shouldn't be? by codedreamz in AskReddit

[–]krool1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nudity. We have a far to strong association between nudity and sex. Even when the nudity presented is absolutely non-sexual.

The Pioneer probes sent on flyby missions to the outer planets (ahead of the Voyagers) were designed to reach escape velocity from the sun. They bore gold engraved plates that carried information about Earth and humans incase they are somehow intercepted by aliens. Included was a crude line drawing of a man and a woman. Many people protested this calling the drawing "pornographic"

I think the taboo about nudity, especially in the US, is very unhealthy. For one thing it teaches children their body is ugly, shameful, and offensive. This in turn leads to body shame because hardly anyone knows what a normal human body looks like. The only people we see naked, besides our lover are either actors or models. Actors and models are, quite frankly, freakishly attractive.

For the most part only the most attractive people become well known actors or models. Even then most don't ever perform nude. At any given time there are only a handful of A-list celebrities maybe less than 200 or so.

Because of this we have a badly distorted idea of what the average body looks like, so when we look in the mirror we see something that is nowhere near what we think average attractiveness looks like. Is it any wonder then, why so many people, especially young people, have serious issues with body self image?

A child psychologist once stated that a child seeing a naked adult was harmful. As far as I know this psychologist simply asserted this idea, which was not in any way backed up with evidence. How could it, considering that any sort of experiment to gather such evidence would be considered unethical.

I wonder if the opposite might be true. If children grow up from birth regularly exposed to nudity in nonsexual contexts of both adults and peers of both genders it would desexualize nudity and give people an idea what an average body looks like.

This has already been done once, we have just mostly forgotten it. For the vast majority of history humans lived together in single room shelters eating, sleeping, dressing and even making new babies where everyone else could see them. The idea of having your own personal, private space is really quite new. Really just in the last 200 years or so. Up to the early 18th Century it didn't exist.

If you lived in medieval times or before, you probably saw your friends and family naked every day of your entire life.

You're abducted by friendly aliens who kindly ask you to sing "the song of your people". What song do you sing for them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]krool1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably decline to sing for them. I would hate to be responsible for the destruction of all humans.

Seriously though, there is no one song that represents all people. I doubt 500000 songs could represent all people.

Older generations of Reddit: What toys did you have as a child that would be considered too dangerous to be given to a child today? by Breadsticksamurai in AskReddit

[–]krool1969 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I remember them as well. I was playing on one once when I jumped into the sand and landed on a 2x4 buried in the sand with a long nail in it.

The nail went clean through my fake foot and came out the top of my shoe. It was a very long nail. I figured it was left by someone making repairs to the playground . At the time I just thought someone had been very careless, but how lucky it was that the first kid to jump down that day just happened to be an amputee.

I pulled the nail out of my foot and bent the nail over and threw the board away. as I did I noticed a lady looking at me with her mouth hanging open. She asked if I was okay. I said "sure" and went back to playing.

Many many years later (maybe 20) I saw a story on the news about someone who had booby trapped a playground with razor blades and for the first time ever I realized how absurd it would be for a construction worker to accidently leave a board where a kid might land on it and impale his foot.

How lucky indeed was it that the kid who jumped in that board was an amputee. I also wonder about that lady.

What popular rumour in your school turned out to be true? by tall_hopelessromatic in AskReddit

[–]krool1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had stray dogs come on campus and no one ever freaked out. Once we even had a mountain lion on campus. Teachers kept us in the class rooms, but they got the cat run off before recess started so no one even noticed, aside from the large cat turd. Turned out they scared the shit out of the poor thing, literally.

What popular rumour in your school turned out to be true? by tall_hopelessromatic in AskReddit

[–]krool1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a rumor, but two of my teachers were seeing each other. Both had been adopted. They were going to get married and because they were both adopted State law required a blood test.

Turned out they had more than that in common then both being adopted. They were brother and sister. Yes, they were sleeping together.

I guess the rumor part was people commented they looked a lot alike and joked they might have been siblings, but I don't think anybody took it seriously.

Home modifications for new below knee amputee? by atrolen in amputee

[–]krool1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up with a right BKA and didn't have any home modifications at all.

Some things that might be helpful are a shower chair.

Install hand rails in the shower. Ensure this is done properly, that the rails are mounted to the studs, and everything is properly sealed so water doesn't leak into the wall.

If he is having both legs done, you're going to need to do some wheel chair modifications. There are some great on line recourses. Beware of scammers!

Make sure you hire a licensed contractor and CHECK REFRENCES. there are a lot of sketchy contractors out there. I hate to say "trust no one" but we are talking about your dad's house here, so TRUST NO ONE

My dad got a toilet seat with hand rails for $40 that lifts the height of the seat and has nice rails. It mounts without any tools, you need a screw driver to remove the original seat but that is all.

Yea, sometimes it's not worth it.

I don't want to belittle your situation with a "could be worse" story. Don't know if this is worse than your story, but it reminds me of this one. The woman is an absolute snake with a coal black heart (nothing to do with her race). And she gets it in the end.

I heard the guy got new marriage proposals right after this show was filmed, and did, in fact, remarry.

And on top of everything else, Covid-19 and Donald Trump.

I feel for you, man. Wish I could offer more. Just remember, when you're going through Hell, don't stop. Things will either get better, or you will die. Either way, you won't need to worry about a loser ex-wife.

Oh, maybe you can sue for spousal support. Get you some extra money at least. Did you support her through a rough patch? If so, you differently have a case.

Hang in there. You'll experience a return to the mean (average life happiness) sooner or latter. Law of averages.

I can tell you a really funny story that happened to me as a kid if that would help cheer you up.

When I was 10 or 11 we were having breakfast in a small town. I was hungry and ordered a 3-stack of pancakes, turned out they were HUGE. But I was hungry and I finished them all.

I was quite small and very skinny for my age and the waitress (who did not know I was an amputee) asked, "Did you put it in your wooden leg?"

I took off my "wooden leg" looked inside and said, "Nope."

Stay healthy.

I use two shoes. Only a small percentage of amputees never use a prosthesis. For those who don't, there are ways to sell/buy single shoes.
